About the Author
Jeffery A. Cole has been teaching mathematics and computer science at Anoka-Ramsey Community College since fall 1981. He started working on the Swokowski series of precalculus texts in 1985 as an ancillary author, and has been a co-author since 1991. His contribution to the Swokowski texts also includes joining the revision team of the calculus text in 1989.

Wouldn't take pre-calc without it

All of the odd problems worked out, step by step.

The formatting isn't pretty, but I don't care.

I used this book (11th edition), with my 12th edition text book. Out of my assigned homework, I found only two problems that were different between the two.

A Must Have book!

I am an adult returning to collage at 59. As you may imagine and higher math training I received has long been forgotten. The fast pace teaching was leaving me without a clue as to what I needed to do in this course. While the text book had answers to the odd questions, with out an explanation of how they were obtained they weren't much use. When I went to school way back then we didn't study algebra, so I wasn't up to speed in the subject as were the younger students just out of high school. This companion to the text book has the odd answers and how they were done, along with explanations. If you are having a hard time you need this book.

The solutions manual is helpful yet can be confusing bcause the manual teaches you the long way which could sometimes prove to be confusing. It is best to understand the formulas first and then use the manual as a cross check to verify that the final solution is correct.

About the Author

Professor Yong-Zai Lu (IEEE Fellow since 1998) earned his diploma degree from the Department of Chemical Engineering, Zhejiang University, China, in 1961, where he currently is an emeritus professor with the Institute of Cyber Systems and Control. He previously was a consulting professor at Shanghai Jiaotong University and a senior consultant at Supcon Co. China. During 1991 to 2003, he held senior consulting and technical positions at Bethlehem Steel Co., i2 Tech Inc. and Pavilion Tech Inc. in the US. He was a full professor and director of research at the Institute of Industrial Control, Zhejiang University, from 1984 to 1991. During 1980-1982, he was with Purdue University as a Visiting Scholar. He has supervised about 80 PhD and MS students. His research interests include system modeling, optimization, advanced control, intelligent control and computational intelligence, and their applications in production scale and real-world complex systems. He has authored and co-authored numerous SCI and EI papers and a number of books. He received National Science and Technology Progress Awards in China in 1989 and 1993, the ISA UOP Technology Award in 1989, and AISE Kelly Awards in the US in 1995 and 1996. He served as the President of IFAC from 1996 to 1999.

Dr. Yu-Wang Chen is a lecturer in decision sciences at the University of Manchester, UK. Prior to his current appointment, he was a postdoctoral research associate at the Decision and Cognitive Sciences (DCS) research centre of Manchester Business School, the University of Manchester, and a postdoctoral research fellow at the Department of Computer Science, Hong Kong Baptist University. He earned his PhD degree from the Department of Automation, Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2008. He has published over 30 journal and conference papers. His research interests include multiple criteria decision analysis under uncertainties, modeling and optimization of complex systems, and risk analysis in supply chains.

Dr. Min-Rong Chen is an associate professor at the School of Computer, South China Normal University, China. She worked at the College of Information Engineering, Shenzhen University, China, from 2008 to 2015. She earned her PhD degree from the Department of Automation, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China, in 2008. She has published over 20 journal and conference papers and has been PI for two Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) projects. Her research interests include evolutionary computation and information security.

Dr. Peng Chen is a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Control Science and Engineering, Zhejiang University, and research engineer at the Research Institute of Supcon Group. He earned his PhD degree from Shanghai Jiaotong University, China, in 2011. He has published over 10 journal and conference papers and been working on a number of production-scale research projects on industrial process modeling and control. His research interests include extremal dynamics and computaional intelligence, system modeling, and optimization control.

Dr. Guo-Qiang Zeng is an associate professor at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Wenzhou University, China. He earned his PhD degree in Control Science and Engineering from Zhejiang University, China, in 2011. He has published over 20 journal and conference papers. He received the Best Poster Paper Finalist and Best Student Paper Finalist from the 8th World Congress on Intelligent Control and Automation, 2010. He also received an NSFC funding on an extremal optimization oriented project. His research interests include computational intelligence, micro-grid, power electronics, complex networks, and discrete event systems.

The abolitionist movement, writes Stewart in this engaging study, grew out of a number of historical conditions in early American society. Fearful of secularism and materialism, and disdainful of the luxurious life of the upper class, evangelical Christians of varying ethnicity banded together to forge a religious revival called the Great Awakening. In the South these evangelicals, especially the Quakers, confronted slave-holding Anglicans. They steadily worked to convert pro-slavery individuals, and they were often successful. By recruiting escaped slaves to speak out publicly against "the peculiar institution," the abolitionists galvanized public opinion outside the South, leading to the sectionalism that would later find its ultimate expression in the Civil War. Stewart's account of the important role that women played in the abolitionist movement is of special interest.

A great history of the abolitionist movement

In this book, originally published in 1976, Stewart provides a basic history of the abolitionist movement beginning with the period of the American Revolution. While most think of abolition as a 19th-century movement, Stewart demonstrates that this period is also important in examining this movement. Many states, primarily in the North, found that the institution of slavery conflicted with the ideas of republicanism that they were using to defend their own rights. During the years following the Revolution, the Northern states abolished slavery either immediately through court decisions as in Massachusetts, or through gradual programs as in New York. The ideas of the Revolution also played an important role in antislavery movements throughout the 19th century.
In examining the 19th Century movement, Stewart focuses most of his book on the Antebellum period and shows the importance of religion and moral suasion in the movement. Stewart also examines how, as time progressed, the movement expanded into the political realm through third parties such as the Liberty and Free Soil parties and how the ideas of the abolitionists influenced the formation of the Republican Party in the mid-1850s. Divisions emerged over the extent to which the abolitionists should become involved in politics and parties corrupted by slaveholders.
The main weakness of this book, in my opinion is that the Civil War years are only briefly covered. It was during these years that the abolitionists were able to put the most pressure on the federal government to take action against slavery. It was also during these years that many of the goals of the abolitionist movement were met. While racial equality was not obtained during Reconstruction, certain rights were guaranteed through Constitutional amendments. Abolitionists played roles in turning the Civil War into a war merely to preserve the Union into a war to create "a more perfect union." This role should be more fully examined in a history of the abolitionist movement.

John H. Fisher, the former President and Executive Director of The New Chaucer Society and of the Modern Language Association of America, is the author of The Importance of Chaucer and of The Emergence of Standard English. He is editor of The Complete Poetry and Prose of Geoffrey Chaucer and of An Anthology of Chancery English.

Mark Allen is the bibliographer of The New Chaucer Society, and the designer and moderator of The Chaucer Bibliography Online. With Bege K. Bowers, he edited Annotated Chaucer Bibliography, 1986-1996, which received the 2002-04 MLA Prize for a Distinguished Bibliography.

The Complete Canterbury Tales of Geoffrey Chaucer
Very few editions of the Canterbury Tales contain all of the tales Chaucer wrote, and most are in modern English rather than the original Middle English of Chaucer's day. This work, however, contains all the Tales that are extant, in Chaucer's own English, and with excellent notes and vocabulary information on Chaucer's words that are unlikely to be known or understood in the way they were meant when he used them. In addition to the portrayal of the age of Chaucer in the tales themselves, the notes add wonderful flavor to them by explaining aspects of Chaucer's society that are behind what he is saying in the tales themselves and in his descriptions of the pilgrims. All told, one gets a wonderful sense of Chaucer's wry wit and an understanding of his age and its concerns and foibles that a translation without such information can hardly provide.

Chaucer's Beautiful Tales Shall Live Forever

This edition of Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales" Edited by John Fisher & Mark Allen is truly the finest version I have ever come across. The Tales are rendered in the original Middle English. The book includes 4 wonderful illuminated manuscripts, three of which show the 'General Prologue' in beautifully crafted scribes traditional writing. The introductions and commentaries of the Editor's add greatly to the understanding and background of Chaucer's Tales. But the book gives the interested reader far more than that.

On every page of the book the Editors have included a double annotation. The first annotation at the bottom of each column is a specific word interpretation by line number of those words which would not commonly be recognized by the 21st Century American reader. This set of annotations assists the reader tremendously in understanding the words of a more archaic origin. But the fact that the Editors chose to include this annotation on a page by page basis, instead of at the end of the book in a glossary as is often done in other printings of the Tales, makes this version particularly readable and convenient. Yet the Editors did not stop there.

In a second set of page by page annotations, the Editors include at the bottom of each page again a line by line set of annotations which explain special interpretations, unusual facts and especially the names of towns today that relate to geographic references made within the Tales. The interpretations that are revealed in this second set of annotations makes the reading of the Tales a total pleasure, without making the reader refer to chapter notes at the back of the book. Rather, these notes are immediately accessible at the bottom of each page, allowing the reader immediate access to these special gems of information which the modern day reader would usually have no way of knowing.

As is usual, the Editors include line numbers every 5 lines throughout the text. Thus, matching the annotations with specific lines in the Tales is made as convenient as possible. The Editors are not shy about helping the reader interpret Chaucer's bawdy references, without being overly explicit in their language, yet completely conveying the meanings that Chaucer was making and the references to certain activities of people which are usually not elucidated in most books. Chaucer is without a doubt, the master of Middle English verse and through his vision and literary expertise, allows modern day readers to have a wonderful illustration of life in 14th Century England. I have never seen a better version of the Tales and I have read at least 4 different versions. Fisher and Allen's version is the most reader friendly by far. It is recommended to all students of Middle English and anyone who wishes to read the poetry of the undisputed master of Middle English.

Great for neophyte and experienced speakers and presenters

Michael Port is one of those rarities in the self-help genre: he’s knowledgeable and honest. He also writes well.

Here he instructs the reader on how to a more effective speaker or presenter, no matter what their role: small meeting to national television.

I have been speaking and presenting to groups for more decades than I care to admit and this book has everything I’ve learned along the way and more.

There is virtually no superfluity in this book. It’s all solid advice for a person standing in front of an audience.

For the person willing to assess themselves critically and willing to learn and adopt new techniques, this is a gem of an instruction manual on how to effectively present.

It's not just a speech, it's a performance. This book will teach you the difference and more.

Note, I've received a pre-publication copy of Steal The Show for review.

I work in the Technology industry where presentations can be less than compelling. We tend to focus on the latest and greatest cool feature, though we don't relate why the tech is important or what was the grand idea behind it very well. We especially don't show why it's personal. I've presented at industry conferences before but never seemed to get the great feedback that I sought. I got a copy of Steal The Show to improve my presentations.

I got more than I anticipated. Steal The Show is a book that demands your time to get the most out of it. If you follow the content and do the work, the results are going to amaze you. It will take time to digest this information as this isn't a read once and never pick up again kind of book. I find myself referring back to it over and over again.

I first expected to read a book on making better speeches. Instead, my whole viewpoint and approach was changed. I must say that Michael has ruined me. After reading this book, I won't ever be able to sit through another mediocre presentation. I can now tell when the speaker threw the presentation together on the plane to the event. My expectations have been permanently raised for both other presenters and myself.
Steal The Show provides a different thought process for developing and delivering your speeches than found in other speaking books. It goes beyond mere speaking techniques and into full blown performance planning and delivery. My biggest ah-ha moment was learning to approach it as a performance instead of a speech and that the performance starts much earlier than when you start speaking.

I was asked to give a project management presentation on resource capacity. I had given it previously to lukewarm results. The presentation was dry and facts heavy. The audience usually sat through most of it but I always lost a lot of people toward the end.

Using the techniques in the book, I reimagined and transformed it into a true performance on why we should be working less hours to be more productive. I made it personal, communicating how these changes had a direct impact on my family. Part of my issue was that the big idea was getting lost in the details. I restructured it from a curriculum speech to an idea speech. I organized the content using the problem/solution framework. The audience response was completely different. They were engaged. No one left early and people talked to me about it during the entire event.

The Steal The Show process changed how I put my performance together. I had to put in the time developing the content, scripting it, reading it out loud and rehearsing it. The scripting process was new for me as I tended to outline the content and wing it from there. Reading it out loud was something that I had never done but it made a huge difference in the sound. When you are making your decisions about what to say in rehearsal instead of in real-time, your performance is easier to give.

I also stopped agonizing over the slides using the STS process. Once I had done the appropriate rehearsal, I know the performance well enough to do it without slides, which I almost had to do. Thankfully, the point on doing a tech check saved me. We discovered the projector bulb had burned out and being the first presenter, I wouldn't have had slides.

I am a much more effective public speaker today thanks to the Steal The Show techniques. I strongly encourage you to buy this book and give them a try.

The Actor’s Art of Stripping Away Artifice — And *Really* Communicating

We have a tendency, at least in casual conversation, to sometimes equate "acting" with a lack of authenticity.

So you might feel wary about the notion that the craft of acting might can help us to communicate with more honesty and authenticity.

You might be worried that accepting Port’s world view would mean that rather than communicating and connecting — you’ll *just* be performing. As a shell. As someone other than yourself.

Don’t.

It’s exactly the opposite.

Michael Port has written an important, compelling, potentially life-changing book — and it’s perfect for those of us who care about communicating as whole, honest, real human beings.

It’s not about being slick or sleazy, and it’s not about using artifice to sway your audiences or your colleagues — it’s about finding ways to strip away the habits, artifice, and distractions that we often pile on to our communications when we’re anxious about the stakes. So yes, those types of communications -- speeches, job interviews, pitches, hard conversations, first conversations.

Port shows us that the actor’s craft — the true actor’s craft — is _not_ about relying upon artifice, but rather, about finding ways to communicate and present in a way that keeps you wholly present and connected to your audience. It’s really about creating the strength to be open, honest, and vulnerable, and developing the communication and perceptual skills that will help us be compelling, engaging, and persuasive in ways that matter.

I received a pre-publication galley of this book as part of a pre-publication purchase incentive, and I’m glad I opted to purchase the book early. It’s a terrific read, full of insight, and full of practical yet often unusual tips for becoming a better communicator — and yes, a better public speaker.

Sure, as part of it all, he tells you about the importance of story, the usefulness of the 3-act structure, and the importance of being prepared — all of which I think we’ve come to expect from books about public speaking. (Like we should all know this now, right?…even if we’re not doing it.). But he also teaches you to stay present for your audience, even when you feel your mind going blank, and how to see your own communications from an audience’s point of view. By providing his own analyses, he helps you understand why what you say may not always connect with those you are trying to reach, and how you might address the gap. Port is especially good at this: seeing communications from the receiver’s point of view — and he’s great at articulating the likely undercurrents in way that’s clear, while also providing some concrete suggestions for his readers.

Stuff I loved and found especially helpful:
-his description of the actor’s rehearsal process — and why adopting it will make your presentations, pitches, and speeches an order of magnitude more engaging than a typical presentation (and why isn’t just about repeating your written speech over and over again in your hotel room or the shower…or please please please no [as he so rightly advises against]…in front of the mirror)
-his argument for rehearsal — even for those of us who feel like we’re pretty good on our feet…and who think we’re getting away with “winging it”
-his argument that the best actors — and the best speakers — are the ones that are willing and able to strip away all artifice and allow themselves to be fully in the moment, fully present, and fully vulnerable to their audience
-his advice about *listening* to your audience, so that you can respond to people in the moment
-his info on the process of content mapping: the process of taking a speech and mapping the content and meaning onto the delivery
-his insight that many of the core principles of theatre and acting are in fact principles of effective communication — because ultimately it is about engaging and connecting with other human beings on multiple levels (i.e., not merely intellectual, but emotional, visceral, aesthetic, sensory, kinaesthetic, and associative levels)
-his focus on taking the reader on a journey from the inside out, because ultimately, you can’t communicate honestly and authentically unless you understand your own internal barriers to doing so, and doing the work.

I think his description of the rehearsal process and content mapping alone are worth the price of the book for experienced public speakers.

And for all of us who just want to communicate more effectively — Port’s advice on the internal work of communication, and his ability to show us (and remind us) how we respond to speakers when they do certain common things — is reason enough to buy and read this book. Even if you only get halfway through. :)

I also love the fact that if you really, really want to master the art of communication, you can approach the ideas in his book from multiple angles, and consume the information in the way that works for you. I used to feel a little stupid about the fact that I had started consuming certain books in multiple formats (e.g., audiobook, Kindle edition, and hard copy!) — but now I realize that I learn better when I can access the same material in multiple ways. I don’t do it for everything — only the stuff that’s really, really rich and really, really good. And Michael Port’s work is that rich and that good — at least for me. Consuming information in multiple formats engages more of my senses, more of my memory, and for the stuff that matters — the extra effort (and yes, investment) is totally worth it.

Port does have a freely available podcast of the same name, Steal the Show (http://stealtheshow.com/podcast). If you’re on the fence, it’s is an excellent take on the same material, presented in a slightly different manner while also modelling exactly the same behaviours that Port recommends in his book. I think you’ll find it an excellent complement to the book — whether you take the book in as either an audiobook or a text, or even both. There are some free videos online, as well as paid courses and training through his speaker training business, Heroic Public Speaking.

This is not your usual public speaking advice, nor the kind of advice you’ll see in business books with strained acronyms and presumably proprietary “systems” with superlative-ridden product names.

I’ve heard Port say that this will be his last book — but I hope it’s not true. What I’d like to see? A follow-up to this book, similar to Book Yourself Solid illustrated. Because I think an illustrated complement to this book — perhaps with diagrams and photographs that help to reinforce some of his descriptions of theatrical concepts — would be enormously helpful as a teaching resource.

So Michael Port — if you’re listening…don’t stop at this book. If you don’t want to do all the work of birthing yet another tome…I think you already have your logical co-author on your team.

Wonderful art by some well know kemono artists and a section dedicated to art by CyberConnect2 staff (The same crew that brings us the Dot Hack series and Naruto fighting games in case you were wondering). I wish Amazon sold the physical copy but this is the next best thing. If you're a fan of anthropomorphic characters or kemono art, this it worth checking out!

Darrian’s dreams were his only escape. Being the blood slave to a clan of vampires wasn’t exactly what he’d had in mind for his life. Not that he had a choice in the matter. No, the rest of the clan used Darrian for his blood. Darrian was just thankful that the vampires considered it a filthy and disgusting habit to do more than feed from him. He wasn’t sure what he’d do if they found his body to be as enticing as his blood. Of course, he wouldn’t mind it so much from one certain vampire…Easton. He’d let that vamp do whatever he wanted.

But as the heir apparent to Master Broman, Easton didn’t feed from him either. Darrian was considered tainted, only good enough for the lower class. It was probably for the best since Easton was arrogant and cruel.
Darrian’s entire life changed the day the clan was attacked and the impossible happened. Broman was gone, and Darrian was free. Or so he thought. But, as the old, archaic human saying went, “from the frying pan, into the fire”. For Darrian found himself in the middle of another clan…one that was very different than the one he’d been freed from. And the master…Kylor…was beyond anything Darrian had ever seen before.

The only problem? They failed to kill Easton…and it seemed he didn’t like Darrian belonging to another clan.

Surprise M/M/M. Not always a good thing

The sample was not bad so I bought this wondering how the story would continue and the unfortunate answer is... not well. *Spoilers*

The 'hero' already has a mate and after a complicated, clumsily fabricated excuse for why he is speshal and has multiple mates is revealed, we find out that the blood slave is is mate too. Yay.
Of course, existing mate is pissed the hell off but nobody really cares. Blood slave guy doesn't even like the hero but doesn't have anything better to do, so he decides to accept the mating. Stuff happens and then they somehow decide that they are all going to live happily ever after. The end.

So. I hate getting hit in the face with surprise m/m/m on a good day. Some authors have surprised me with it before, but I still enjoyed the stories. This is not one of those stories.

Hmmmm

2.5* So I'm not sure about this one. I did not like that I was not warned of the multiple rape scenes. I also did not like that this was not a fully consensual three some with one mate being visible hurt by his mate taking a second mate. The world was good and the story compelling but this one hit me wrong and ended abruptly leaving me feel like it was unfinished.

Really enjoyed this first book in the Vampire Wars series so much I book the rest of the books in the series before even finishing this story. This "Vampire" story caught my attention because of how it started off, with a Human Blood Slave telling horror story that was his life. It was tragic and vicious. Then we learn about the twist, a clan of them aren't regular Vamps, they are actually an old species thought to be extinct or a myth. They are called Dyads which is a combination of Vampire and Shifter. Literally Shifters who can shift into whatever Animal they choose. They have favorites, but the Vampire is the dominant half of their beings.

In this first story the reader is introduced to a whole new world full of True Vampires, Shifters, Humans, and the secretive Dyads. Instead of betas the Vampires have "kedges". The smaller, weaker True Vampires that can only feed from the clan Master are called Pyrinas. This is a violent society where Shifters and Humans are regularly captured and imprisoned to serve as Blood Slaves.

The governing Vampire and Shifter Councils have empowered certain clans in particular Kylor's Dyads clan to go after the Master vampires who are capturing, imprisoning, torturing, and killing Humans and Shifters. In this book Dyad Master Kylor meets his second mate when he infiltrates a vicious clan that treats Humans like an expendable food source. What happens next sets up the remaining stories in this series. More kedges and Vampires are introduced that will later play important roles in later stories.

About the Author
Richard J. Erickson (Ph.D., Fuller Theological Seminary) is associate professor of New Testament at Fuller Seminary Northwest in Seattle, where he has taught exegesis to students for over twenty years. Erickson has also taught courses at Lutheran Brethren Seminaries in Ka�l�, Cameroon, and Sendai, Japan, at Seminario B�blico de Colombia in Medell�n, at Seminario Teol�gico Presbiteriano San Pablo in M�rida, Yucat�n, and at Tyndale Theological Seminary in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Erickson has published several articles in professional journals and in Faith and Fellowship, the denominational magazine of the Church of the Lutheran Brethren, the church in which he is ordained. He has also presented research papers at professional meetings and is a frequent speaker at various churches and conferences.

The Guide We've All Been Waiting For

As one who has taught New Testament courses for over 20 years now, I am so grateful to Rich Erickson for writing this book. This is the guide that all of us, teachers and students, have been waiting for someone to write. I have no doubt it will become the standard guide to New Testament interpretation and exegesis for years to come. It is amazingly comprehensive and very thorough BUT at the same time it is written in a conversational style that is engaging and communicates clearly and simply with its reader. Thanks Rich for writing a book that I will use in my classes and recommend over and over again to all my friends and students.

Exegetical Method done realistically and skillfully!

Rich Erickson has provided beginning students of Exegetical Method a more digestible way of understanding how to unlock what was divinely inspired in the New Testament. His book invites a beginning exegete into this complex method of study yet through his step by step process takes the fear out of learning the techniques required to thouroughly exegete passages of scripture. His creative writing style not only is humorous at times but some of his analogies help the beginner remember valuable techniques of exegesis. He also masterfully takes the beginning exegete from feelings of trepidation to feelings that exegeting scripture is a journey that requires each of us to relax and continue on. It is not simply something we do once and put the books away after a class is over, it is something we do for a life time if we want to grasp the divine-human intention of scripture.

Exegesis- a Life Long Adventure

Rich Erickson's book does a fantastic job of bringing the task of biblical exegesis within the grasp of even beginning biblical scholars. The tools and skills of biblical exegesis are presented in a thorough manner with many encouragements and suggestions along the way to bite off only what you can chew. Exegesis is an exciting, lifelong journey he says! Don't be discouraged by what you CAN'T do, celebrate what you CAN and be amazed at the insights you gain!
