Very Helpful

This is a great study guide for the IB physics exams. the book gives clear and concise explanations of all the core topics and options, both HL and SL. Also, the practice tests after each section are very helpful. However, remember that this is a study-guide, and thus it should not be the main source for studying. a more in-depth book should be purchased for more than just a review.

An Excellent Guide to Diabetes for Women...and For Men Too

I just finished reading "A Woman's Guide to Diabetes. A Path to Wellness" by Brandy Barnes MSW and Natalie Strand MD. It was an excellent read. While written in plain, everyday language, for nonmedical people, it is based on solid medical and scientific knowledge. Further, it is published by the American Diabetes Association.

The book largely alternates between chapters discussing the medical/scientific aspects of diabetes, written by Dr. Strand and chapters addressing psychological/emotional issues, written by Ms. Barnes. But what really brings this book to life is that each author has "walked the walk" of living with Type 1 diabetes.

Natalie was diagnosed at age 12 and Brandy a bit later in her early teens. They have liberally shared their own personal history. The book is peppered with their own comments and experiences. They share their fears, struggles and concerns along with later successes and triumphs.

This is a book that sheds light on a very common, but often misunderstood disease. There are about 27 million individuals in the United States with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. When you add parents, siblings, spouses, loved ones to that figure, there are at least 100 million folks in the US affected by diabetes. The book doesn't skimp on the difficulties and challanges of living with diabetes, but ultimately points the way to success and wellness.

Finally, while this book is geared towards women's issues, at least 80% of the material applies to men as well. And perhaps the people that just might get the most out of this book are the spouses, significant others and parents of loved ones with diabetes. Now...an important disclosure...I am Natalie's Dad. But I am also a physician and the father of two Type 1 children, Natalie and her 37 year old brother, who was diagnosed just a year ago.

Even though as a physician, I know, and have learned a lot, about diabetes. But, as I read Brandy and Natalie's book, I was somewhat surprised about how much more I learned. I wish I could have had a book like this 25 years ago when Natalie was first diagnosed.

In their book, Brandy and Natalie ask the question "Are there things about diabetes that have actually improved your life?" The answer was "Yes!" And in many surprising ways. An increased appreciation of life, friends and family. A commitment to make a difference. Enjoying healthy nutrition and lifestyle.

For Natalie and I, I know our Father/Daughter relationship was strengthened and enriched. For her, diabetes was never an obstacle. She likes to say "Diabetes is a challange, not a limitation"...and perhaps even an opportunity.

I just finished reading "A Woman's Guide to Diabetes: A Path to Wellness" by Brandy Barnes MSW and Natalie Strand, MD. This is one of the first books on Diabetes that I authentically could identify and relate to. I like how it includes both Mrs.Barnes and Dr.Strand's medical and emotional perspectives. Although I do not have diabetes, I come from a family (both parents)
side with a long history of diabetes. This is a book I will positively recommend to each and everyone. My husband's family as well. Thank You, Ladies for your compassion and empathy in writing this book. Truly, Vickie Null

A must-read! Especially if you're new to living with diabetes!

Especially if you're new to life with diabetes, this book is a must! While there are so many books in the world that can give you straight-old information on diabetes, there are very few that can lift you up and remind you that you're not alone -- and this is one of those books! Nat and Brandy are real women, living real lives with diabetes, and their combined experiences and expertise provides a perfect mix of need-to-know-facts delivered in a way that is helpful, not lecturing or scary, with true life. Knowledgable, compassionate, and completely legit -- these women know what life is like with diabetes and they shared their wisdom in a way that is genuine and comforting.

About the Author
Born in 1904 on New York's Lower East Side, Sydney Taylor was one of the first authors of children’s books centered on Jewish characters. She didn’t begin writing until she married and had a daughter, to whom she told bedtime stories about growing up with five sisters. She wrote a manuscript and put it in a drawer, and it wasn’t until her husband secretly submitted it to Charles A. Follet Award for Writing that Taylor’s bedtime stories became the immensely popular All-of-a-Kind Family series.

Taylor died in 1978 at the age of seventy-three. The Sydney Taylor Book Award is given each year by the Jewish Association of Libraries to a book for young people that authentically portrays the Jewish experience.

One of the most wonderful books I have ever read.

I first read this as a child, growing up in the south in a pentacostal holiness church. This book was my very first introduction to the Jewish Faith, what it means and how it impacted day-to-day life. I found that this family was a very loving family who encouraged their girls (then baby boy) to learn and to grow up strong. I remember wanting to be Jewish so that I could be a member of their family. There was so much fun and love.
Well, I have since learned about the "Jewish" stereotype. However, I was not suckered in by the error because my first experience with Jews came about through the All of A Kind Family books. I am convinced that I knew the truth about the Jewish people because of these books.
I strongly recommend that these books be added to all reading lists, as they help to teach kindness, love, and tolerance for all people, just like they helped to teach to me.

Turn-of-the-century Jewish experience - a child's-eye view.

Sydney Taylor won the Follett Publishing Company book award - she didn't even know her husband, Ralph, had submitted her first novel to the publisher! - for this, her first children's book. Thus began a career that is most distinguished for the series detailing the adventures of five sisters early in this century. Most distinguishing about them is the fact that they are Jewish, not as a stereotyping characteristic but rather a means to explore landscape that hadn't yet been handled in children's literature. This first in the series is particularly insightful in its introduction of the Jewish high holy days - Sabbath days, Yom Kippur, Purim and Succos among them. (Plus, the author even throws in the Lower East Side's celebration of a purely American event - Fourth of July - to demonstrate that this bright-spirited family is tied not merely to its religious roots but is nationalistic as well!) While All-of-a-Kind Family is one of those falsely sunny books that came out of the 1940s and 1950s, it's nice to believe that this is the life that Taylor lived as a child. (Incidentally, Taylor's real name was Sarah, and the stories are based loosely on her own childhood. All of the sisters' names are real.) Sydney Taylor died in February 1978. This initial story was followed by four more books in the series: More All-of-a-Kind Family, All-of-a-Kind Family Uptown, All-of-a-Kind Family Downtown and, published posthumously, Ella of All-of-a-Kind Family.

A story of family and friends

Although this is the 4th book of the series, it actually takes place between All-of-a-Kind Family and More All-of-a-Kind Family. This story is part of the continuing tale of a Jewish family living in New York's lower East Side in the early 1900's. Although they are poor, they are rich in their love of each other and their friends. Now there is a new baby in the house and talented Ella, mischevious Henny, studious Sarah, dreamy Charlotte, and little Gertie help Mama with the baby and find friends along the way. In this book, we meet Guido, a poor Italian boy who is trying to care for his sick mother and Miss Carey, a nurse who works at the Settlement House. Through the eyes of these characters, we understand what it must have been like growing up in the lower East Side before World War I. We learn about their sorrows and their joy over the little things in life. A highly recommended book.

Very Good!

I like how Professor Hawking not only focuses on Black Holes but also on personal details of himself in this book so the reader can get a better idea of who he is outside Cosmology and Theoretical Physics such as his childhood, taste in music, and his experience living with ALS and how he views having ALS in a more positive light rather than a negative one. My favorite essay was probably the one where Professor Hawking discusses how science has been viewed by the public or whether there is an end to Theoretical Physics in the future. A very good follow-up to A Brief History Of Time and a good book for those who are looking to learn more about one of the most brilliant minds in history or who already fans of Professor Hawking's work in Cosmology, Astronomy, Theoretical Physics, and Mathematics.

This collection of essays from Stephen Hawking is likely to be his only "autobiography". It's collected from several lectures and articles, and it reviews highlights of his scientific contributions (in layman's terms) as well as some aspects of his personal life. He also has a pretty good sense of humor so I found this book fairly easy to read and interesting as well.

Todd founded performance nutrition company, Emergent Nutrition. He has been weight training for over 20 years, and powerlifting at an elite level since 2011. During this time, he’s learned what works for building muscle size and strength, what doesn’t, and how to achieve the best results over time, while minimizing the risk of serious injury. The Powerbuilding Blueprint reflects the culmination of this knowledge, incorporates influences and lessons from world-class strength athletes, and programs it simply and effectively for all levels of lifters. Using this program, Todd gained nearly 100 pounds on his squat (to the mid-700s), and 20 pounds of muscle, in just 12 months (without PEDs, and after almost 2 decades of training!). I found the book, The Powerbuilding Blueprint, to be an excellent resource for both strength and bodybuilding training. The concepts it purports are basic, historic and proven. The presentation of the material is reader friendly, easily assimilated and implemented. As well it contains what I consider to be accurate and genuinely helpful nutritional information. This book focuses on the indispensable center and core of serious strength and bodybuilding training. I highly recommend this book to all who have an interest in this subject.

An Outstanding Companion To Any Interested in Powerbuilding and Health

Todd Henry's The Powerbuilding Blueprint is a welcome addition to literature on the sport -- and the life changes enabled by -- powerbuilding. Henry starts off by making clear that this is not the book for anyone looking for a fad formula for unnatural results. Rather, he shares a foundation of basic principles and a sound methodology. Those of us who exercise regularly can attest to his philosophy that powerbuilding can change your attitude and life. This couldn't be more true.

Henry is interested in functional strength, as opposed to limited aesthetic "strength" that looks good in the gym's mirrors or in the showroom -- he uses a great metaphor of a Lamborghini with no muscle. In order to achieve healthy strength, Henry provides the reader -- both novice and advanced -- with an easy-to-follow, detailed weekly schedule designed both to help you emerge with new-found muscles and strength, but also to give your body (muscles and joints) the rest they need. Henry does not believe in a philosophy of forced exertion that will injure your body.

Henry also provides great tips on how to use different exercises to accomplish your goals -- for example, the dead lift, bench press, and squat -- as well as the equipment best suited to your exercise way of life.

Henry concludes with a fantastic FAQ session that addresses the very questions I had in mind while reading the e-book. His answers are detailed and practical in a way that you can put to use the next time you hit the gym.

Todd Henry the author puts his money where his mouth is with this book. Not only is it informative, well concieved and thought out, it strips away all the fat, pun intended. I wish there were more like him in this industry. Grab a hold of this and check out his new line of body mass-body building suppliments. About the Authors
Zhi-Pei Liang is a faculty member in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). Dr. Liang has contributed to the theory and applications of image reconstruction, constrained imaging, and image analysis. He received the Sylvia Sorkin Greenfield Best Paper Award of the Medical Physics Journal in 1990 and the National Science Foundation Career Award in 1995. Dr. Liang was named a Beckman Fellow of the UIUC Center for Advanced Study in 1997 and a Henry Magnuski Scholar for Outstanding Young Faculty Member in the ECE Department in 1999.
Paul C. Lauterbur is a Center-for-Advanced-Study professor of Medical Information Sciences, Chemistry, and Molecular and Integrative Physiology and professor in the Center for Biophysics and Computational Biology, the Bioengineering Program, and the Beckman Institute all at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Before conceiving of and demonstrating magnetic resonance imaging in 1971 1972, Dr. Lauterbur used nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to study molecular structures. Among his numerous awards are the 1987 National Medal of Science, 1990 Bower Award and Prize for Achievement in Science, and 1994 Kyoto Prize for Advanced Technology. Dr. Lauterbur is a member of the National Academy of Sciences.

A definitive text for the signal processing of MRI

Magnetic resonance has recently recieved many riches in the form of excellent, definitive texts that have bundled together the advances of the last 20 or so years. Drs. Liang and Lauterbur have added to this trove by writing a text that goes beyond the standard descriptions of magnetic resonance image formation and including many advanced techniques available today, some of which they originated. The ideal audience for this text includes scientists, engineers, and physicians actively developing MRI applications from the physics on up. Though containing many recent developments it contains a core of medical imaging information that will not be outdated. The mathematical depth is sufficient to serve as a reference of basic and sophisticated methods but with enough pedagogical information to tutor the interested student. Liang and Lauterbur should be on the shelf of any serious professional or insightful student.

Excellent coverage of MR physics, however complicated maths.

The selection of the chapters and the overall coverage of this book are excellent. It provides an outstanding and detailed description of MR physics and of how MR signals are generated and processed. However, not being an engineer or a physicist but a MD interested in MRI, I had some problems with the mathematical background required to understand the formulas used in this book. I feel that the book would be greatly improved if a more detailed explanation to the mathematics were given. At this point, I would recommend this book to graduate students or Ph.D.'s in physics, in biomedical or in electrical engineering, who want to understand in detail the principles of MR signal generation and processing. Because of the somewhat complicated mathematics, the book might be somewhat less destined, but still of interest, to radiologists and MRI physicians who, like me, want to enhance their understanding of MR physics and signal processing.

Great Detail, But Lacking in Motivation

First let me describe the book as to its production quality. This is one of the typical IEEE productions, namely the paper quality is on par with your local newspaper, the binding cracks upon opening, and they have the annoying "enhancements" of shading examples in gray which often makes them unreadable. I have had this problem with most IEEE books and for the price they charge they should at least provide some quality in production.

Now to the content. The authors provide a comprehensive and detailed analysis of MRI and signal processing.

My concerns relate to the following issues:

1. MRI can be quite difficult. The reader must first understand the physics, then the signaling to effect a response signal, then the modulation of the response so as to select voxels to be detected, and then the Fourier analysis which produces the image. The reader, if approaching this for the first time, even a well educated signal processing engineer, should have a pathway to follow. The authors fail in this element. All the information is there, yet one must construct the framework.

2. Certain equations are critical. Others take one along the path. For example, Eq 3.150 and 3.154 are essential. They are what makes MRI. However the authors just slide from one to the other and then from Eq 4.1-4.5 use these without regard to a reasonable transition. They introduce a function M, and one suspects it may be M(w) or M(z) or M(t). Having taught material like this at MIT and written books on the subject of signal processing, one must be careful to delineate key transitions and important equations.

3. The authors have lots of equations but one gets lost in which ones count and how one should follow the "bread crumbs" to use a metaphor. The classic book by Van Trees on Detection and Estimation was the "gold standard" for taking the reader and/or student along the path and delineating key points and conclusions. In this text the authors just seem to jumble every equation together with equal value.

4. The heart of MRI is the signals used to do phase and frequency transitions across the elements to be processed. The discussion in this book regarding that is, I feel, quite weak. One should be given a good intuitive feeling and then apply the mathematics. As I have often told my students, first explain what is happening and then apply the mathematics to "pretty it up". Here the authors have almost bludgeoned the reader with mathematics.

The book contains great pearls, yet the quality of the printing, not the authors' fault, and the jumbling of every equation possible, leaves the reader wondering. A better press, publisher, and a rewrite with focus and builds of ideas would make this a great and much needed contribution to the field. It is clear that the authors know their material, it just needs fine tuning.

I found this text to be a fascinating read. I learned much about the history of functional appliances, their development and the reasons behind their development. For any student of orthodontics, this book provides an excellent history of functional orthodontics and its place in the armamentarium of the modern orthodontist. --Kevin J.
