About the Author
Stephen Ross is presently the Franco Modigliani Professor of Finance and Economics at the Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. One of the most widely published authors in finance and economics, Professor Ross is recognized for his work in developing the Arbitrage Pricing Theory and his substantial contributions to the discipline through his research in signaling, agency theory, option pricing, and the theory of the term structure of interest rates, among other topics. A past president of the American Finance Association, he currently serves as an associate editor of several academic and practitioner journals. He is a trustee of CalTech, a director of the College Retirement Equity Fund (CREF), and Freddie Mac. He is also the co-chairman of Roll and Ross Asset Management Corporation. Randoloph W. Westerfield is Dean of the Marshall School of Business at University of Southern California and holder of the Robert R. Dockson Dean's Chair of Business Administration. From 1988 to 1993, Professor Westerfield served as the chairman of the School's finance and business economics department and the Charles B. Thornton Professor of Finance. He came to USC from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, where he was the chairman of the finance department and member of the finance faculty for 20 years. His areas of expertise include corporate financial policy, investment management and analysis, mergers and acquisitions, and stock market price behavior. Professor Westerfield has served as a member of the Continental Bank trust committee, supervising all activities of the trust department. He has been consultant to a number of corporations, including AT&T, Mobil Oil and Pacific Enterprises, as well as to the United Nations, the U.S. Department of Justice and Labor, and the State of California.

This International version nearly identical to US book Corporate Finance 8th Edition ISBN 0073337180. I was supposed to have the US book for my class and mistakenly bought this one. I compared my book to a classmates and the only differences I found were in the problems. Rather than an American company name like Irrigation Specialists and money in $'s, the problem would read Broslofski and money is in Euros. So if you want to save money, I recommend buying the international version.

MAKE SURE IT IS THE FULL PLAY!!!

I bought I Never Saw Another Butterfly (One Act) by Celeste Raspanti (1980-07-01) EXPECTING the full play. Not a "cutting"... for goodness sakes it's a ONE ACT play. Cutting is completely unnecessary. I am miffed because the word cutting does not appear in the description. One has to look at the picture of the actual book to see that it is a cutting only...not easy on a cell phone! Misrepresentation as far as I am concerned.....and to do that with THIS play??? Wow...some people have NO scruples.
Not happy :(
However, this play is monumental work. It's historical significance is enormous. Do yourself a favor and find the full version and buy that instead.

I Never Saw Another Butterfly performance

We've been rehersing this play for about a month and a half now and are performing it tomorrow! I love the story but I would recommend that if you are involved that you do some research of you didn't know much like me. Schindler's list is helpful. I play Honza, who is a positive aspect of the play but the part is still depressing. It really does depend on how you look at it. You either focus on the horrible things that happened, and how many people died, or the positives - that people actually survived to tell the story. It's quite hard for me as I'm playing Honza in 2(we're only doing 2) performances and there are 2 Raja's (or Rayas). Please if you are in this play just appreciate the seriousness of the issue before you start acting.

"There is no home for the hunted."

Illuminate by Tracy Clark is the final installment of the Light Key Trilogy and finds our heroine Cora Sandoval journeying from Ireland to Italy to Chile in her quest to find out who and what she is, and how her people, the Scintilla, figure into history. As she is traveling, she is also running from the Arazzi, the mortal enemy of the Scintilla who are capable of killing them by sucking out the Scintilla’s energy. This book picks up immediately where its predecessor, Deviate, ended, and throws us immediately back into the action.

I mentioned in a previous review that the series reminds me a bit of The DaVinci Code, and this feel continues in Illuminate. I pretty much geeked out over this book, because it combines all of my favorite elements: history, religion, geography, magical powers, and sarcasm. I loved the hunt for historical and religious clues, and the fact that Ms. Clark understands that history and religion are not independent of one another. I loved how she touched upon duality and what it means to be part of humanity – we are all connected, intertwined with one another through our actions. The search for connection has been a prominent theme of this series, and one that resonates with me personally.

And the love? The love is abundant. But make no mistake: this is not a typical YA romance book. Romance isn’t forefront on Cora’s mind; survival is. She understands that she loves both Finn and Giovanni, but she understands that she first has a duty to protect the Scintilla and find out the truth.

The characters in Illuminate continue to be dimensional, loving, funny, and loyal. Cora, Finn, and Giovanni would all sacrifice themselves for one another in an instant, regardless of their history. Cora is strong and, when I think about who she was in the first book and who she is now, I can’t believe how much she has grown.

The entire series is all about the balance of light and dark, and how light and dark aren’t opposing forces, but necessary halves that, when combined, result in a beautifully complete wholeness. That is how I felt when I finished Illuminate: these books combined to create a beautiful and fulfilling experience. I can’t recommend them highly enough. Oh, and make no mistake: that ending? It’s not an ending. It’s a beginning.

Illuminate: 10 out of 5 stars. For real. The feels in this book. Layered, kind, funny, descriptive, vivid, intelligent, and hopeful.

You love films like National Treasure and The Da Vinci Code
You’re hungry for a maddening puzzle filled with art and literature references
You want your heart to feel so full it might burst from the sheer outpouring of love and hope

PROS:
Wow. This book. It’s incredible. A puzzle that crosses the lines between history, art, religion and myth, you’ll rush to decipher clues and piece everything together before it’s too late. I was insanely impressed with how well everything fit together. You’ll want to believe. An adrenaline rush of constant adventure and unexpected connections, have your phone handy to look up the art references, it gives the story a whole new dimension.

THAT ENDING. You know those far and few moments in a story where you’re so moved that you know that scene will stay with you forever? This was it for me. Think the end of The Amber Spyglass.

Cora has come so far from the beginning of the book. She’s a dazzling, fierce young woman who lives her beliefs. She’s courageous, endearing and easy to relate to. Her relationship struggles are full of confusion and angst. Her heart is open and has loved so deeply, for different reasons, it really shows that true love and connection can happen on the soul-level more than once. Cora’s selflessness super charges her compassion. Her willingness to give herself freely is uplifting and deeply moving.

Finn is conflicted. He wars with the thirst inside him to take and the giving side that wants nothing more than to share his love freely with Cora. His loyalty to his heritage, the secrets he unravels all put him in a precarious situation and in the middle of both groups. Finn’s devotion to Cora is beyond swoon-worthy, it’s transcendent. She is everything to him and despite everything working against them, destiny included it seems, he refuses to let her go.

Giovanni is fiery, impulsive and stubborn but intense and driven. He makes decisions and easily falls into the role of a leader. For the first time, Giovanni understands what it means to be grounded, to find a home, and to have something precious worth fighting for. The threat of losing more than his life makes him grow up fast and he becomes an irresistable force.

The romance is complex and passionate. Each pairing has different complications but the love radiates off the pages in piercing bursts of understanding and adoration. It’s about more than lust, it’s about that forever kind of love that can move mountains, that can change the world.

CONS:
The story is high stress, high danger and because of that, there aren’t many light, carefree moments. While there’s a lot of love, the silly, flirty fun that was in previous books was absent. I found myself missing Finn’s cute accent, roguish quips, as well as Giovanni’s intensity.

Some story elements felt incomplete. The situation with Claire, the Catholic priest, the role of the Church, it was all a little rushed and a stronger, clear picture of the exact intentions and the shared responsibility with the Arazzi would have helped with the magnitude and reach of the danger.

I can't believe it's all over

This book starts off with a bang. Finn and Cora both kill Arazzi and regular humans working with the Arazzi. But the trouble they are facing is way bigger than an ambush leaving them murderers. Cora must go to Italy, Giovanni must go to Chile to be with his surprise daughter Claire (the offspring of an experiment done at the facility), and Finn must stay in Ireland.

I did not like how these guys were split up for the majority of the book. I get why it needed to happen, though. Real life does not mean they all get to hang out and do research together. Finn had responsibilities in Ireland. Giovanni had to be with his daughter for obvious reasons. And Cora needed to finish this lead. I just wish it hadn't been that way for selfish reader reasons.

Giovanni starts to prepare the Scintilla in Chile who were hiding out on Mami Tulke's ranch, which was like major news and made me really happy, for war with the Arazzi. Now this approach seemed pretty rushed and kind of sat awkward with me. I mean, I probably would have been the same way in a situation like that, but it was just a little odd feeling for Giovanni to hop right on in to battle strategy.

Finn's off in Ireland getting cozy for strategic purposes with Ultanna's daughter, who inherits the throne her mother left behind. Lorcan gets super pissed about that and Soarise is kind of sketchy this entire time. (I would like to say that I pegged her as the bad guy the moment she walked onto the page!) Finn isn't completely helpless towards Cora's cause. He's researching and doing as much as he can to help her using his Arazzi status.

Cora, on the other hand, makes a shocking discovery in Italy that I think we need to discuss. Cora discovers what that key that's been around her neck forever unlocks. And it's a picture of Mary and Jesus. Surrounded in a silver aura. As Scintilla.

First off, this is very dangerous for a writer to do. You don't know how your audience is going to react to taking something religious and powerful like that and messing with it in your writing. But I applaud Tracy Clark for doing it at the same time.

Now I know that many of you probably weren't too happy about this approach because it could be considered slightly blasphemous, but before you bring out the torches, hear what I have to say about it and why I think it was a smart thing for her to do.

Tracy Clark's world is entirely her own. If it were real, the odds are that someone like Jesus would have been Scintilla and there's literally nothing wrong with that. I mean, why wouldn't he be? He brought people back to life, so did Cora. It makes total sense and it would almost be inaccurate for that not to be the case.

Of course, it was kind of strange and it did take me a while to get used to it, being a Catholic myself, but I see where she was coming from and I respect that. It did work for the story as well, I must say. And when the story goes on and talks about the corruptness of the Church, I feel conflicted on that part. There is truth in it. Many churches are corrupted although I think our pope now is doing wonders for the Catholic community. But hey it is what it is and it worked for the story.

The story goes on and everything is sort of weird for a while. Cora enlists the help of some documentary person in return that she expose Scintilla. It reminded me of some book I read, but I couldn't place it. It was a nice road she took it down, however, because it offered more to the story than just going to Chile and saving the world would have. She had someone documenting it the entire time.

But then the Arazzi show up and Cora touches some age old book and suddenly everything is put in perspective. Arazzi and Scintilla are not natural born enemies. They were born to be together. So does this mean Cora chooses Finn? Because I was still stuck in that love triangle. And I guess I still am because what they decide to do doesn't exactly explain anything to me. Other than that they restored balance to the world (I'm talking Arazzi and Scintilla as a whole and not just Cora and Finn).

The Arazzi and Scintilla join themselves to each other by the Scintilla giving themselves to the Arazzi and then they all kind of erupt into light and disappear. It's a beautiful idea. But I'm going to be honest with you, I was left with no closure!

What happened to Claire? Was she really Arazzi because I didn't think so. And what about all those people falling down randomly and not because of Arazzi attacks? And who did Cora choose? Because it didn't feel like she chose Finn for romantic reasons. Please Tracy Clark, answer these questions and I will be able to die in peace!

Overall, it was a good book. I rated it four out of five stars on Goodreads. Deviate is still my favorite installment of the series, especially since it's got the best cover (in my opinion) and I'm really sad to see this series end. Cora was a character I related to and loved. I can't believe it's all over.

As a brilliant young man influenced by the theatrical visionary Gordon Craig, he turned his hand to Shakespeare, opera, new French drama, and mainstream comedy. Following Craig's philosophy, Brook began to search for a simplicity, harmony, and beauty that would incorporate all aspects of the stage production under the control of one person. He also began the lifelong search for authenticity on the stage, a search that led him around the world from London to New York, to his legendary Th��tre des Bouffes du Nord in Paris, to Broadway and the Brooklyn Academy of Music. It was in Paris, in the 1970s, that he attempted to discover a universal language of theater with an international group of actors. This collaboration resulted in a series of visually spectacular and innovative shows including The Ik, The Conference of the Birds, and The Mahabharata.

In his long and influential career, he worked with some of the world's greatest actors and writers including Glenda Jackson, Paul Scofield, John Gielgud, Laurence Olivier, Irene Worth, Jeanne Moreau, Peter Weiss, and Truman Capote. His films, such as Lord of the Flies, Moderato Cantabile, King Lear (with Paul Scofield), The Beggar's Opera, and the film of Marat/Sade moved the camera and the screen to borders they had not reached before. His book The Empty Space continues to be one of the classic works on theater and drama in the Western canon and his memoir, Threads of Time, gave us a glimpse into his personal development. In this biography, based on extensive interviews with Peter Brook and many of the actors, writers, producers, and directors he's worked with throughout his life, Michael Kustow goes to the heart of Brook's theater, his self-searching and his unceasing desire to produce work that redefines theater and life.

What Peter Brook has achieved in his 80 years is remarkable. Firmly rooted in tradition and constantly innovating, he achieved early commercial success in London's West End. He became one of the most visionary theater directors, found a comfortable niche in the British film industry, and established a well-regarded English- and French--language theater in Paris. He directed some of the most influential Shakespeare productions in Anglo-American theater and devoted much of the latter half of his life to exploring nontraditional, non-Western styles of theater, creating stage adaptations of two canonical religious texts, the Sufi Conference of Birds and the Hindu epic The Mahabarata. He wrote the book on contemporary theater, The Empty Space (1968). If you are a theater person or someone who loves the theater and would like to know about how this marvelous man became the greatest, most influential director in the western world, this is the book for you. I would also recommend "The Empty Space" by Peter Brook himself, or any other of his books.

Perhaps when Peter Brook celebrates his hundredth birthday we may anticipate a retrospect with some revelatory twist, stylistic shimmer, or special insight into this bafflingly complex character.

Meantime we have Michael Kustow's Peter Brook: A Biography, a well-meant journalistic reprise with all the poetry of "the time sponsored by Accurist". We are reminded that Brook's `white box' production of `A Midsummer Night's Dream' was a succ�s fou; that his book The Empty Space re-energised theatre; and that he discreetly resonates to the spiritual teaching of George Ivanovitch Gurdjieff.

During his long life Brook has met many people with interests similar to his own: and certainly many with magnetic readership pull - Castro, Grotowski, Hitchcock, Capote, Aleister Crowley, and Jean Genet (whom he alarmingly wanted to be Godfather to his daughter). Yet significantly A.W.O.L from Kustow's text and ten-page index is William Segal, hero of A Voice at the Borders of Silence.

If Kustow's is a dutiful exhumation, the Segal item (fulsomely prefaced by Brook) is an unindexed and undisciplined scrapbook, thrown together like a rich plum pudding by its subject's widow Marielle Bancou-Segal. So blatantly does it sacrifice critical vigilance on the altar of conjugal love that it bids to give hagiography a bad name. Everyone gets swept away in a Tsunami of mutual admiration: Segal thinks gods to Brook, while Brook recklessly asserts that Segal's "innermost core was an opening to eternity".

Thirty evocative photographs redeem Kustow's biography (not least David Farrell's trapeze-lofted Oberon and Puck in the fairy realm above Bottom and Titania) and Brook himself is modestly presented...Segal was anything but camera-shy, blatantly viewing his entire existence as a serial photo-opportunity. When young he was photogenic in All-American mode: in old age, following a drastic car accident, he deployed a monocle and piratical black eye patch. He was an artist too. "William Segal the painter", explains Brook, "looks at the outside world and leads us into William Segal the man." He certainly does. Most of his paintings are self-portraits; his motive being analytical - and apropos he nods kindly to Rembrandt.

Brook has powered forward from Doctor Faustus in 1943 to Tierno Bokar in 2004, like a self-fulfilling prophecy - "a man who has guided his own profusion to a rich simplicity" claims Kustow, in his best sentence. By contrast, the young New York sophomore William Segal, heralded as the speediest left halfback of a decade and sentenced to "a brilliant gridiron future", quickly swerved vocationally. Of Romanian Jewish ancestry and entrepreneurial flair, he somehow broke into fashion publishing and became emancipatingly rich. Looking down from his elegant office in Empire State Building, he would sometimes ruminate on profit margins, sometimes on difficulties facing "the average person", and sometimes on Meister Eckhart.

Aptly enough, in the early 1940s, aged about thirty-eight, Segal chanced to fall in with the author of Tertium Organum Piotr Demianovich Ouspensky ("a regular fellow in many ways"); in 1947, the year Ouspensky died, Segal met the prolix Zen theoretician Daisetzu Teitaro Suzuki - cultivating him and even taking him to meet Madame Ouspensky and watch sacred dances at Mendham, New Jersey; in 1948 and 1949 Segal won sporadic contact with Gurdjieff himself, teacher both of Ouspensky and of the avant-garde lesbian Jane Heap. By 1951 Brook, aged twenty-six, had become a pupil of Heap in London, and Segal had launched the bon ton journal Gentry ("It truly had a superior audience")...Curious lines were now converging.

It is Brook's endorsement of Kustov's biography which dignifies it; here then is the memorial or C.V. favoured by a first-rank cultural icon...Arguably more oblique is the American book's significance. The wearisome extolling and self-extolling of Segal ranks for nothing historically compared with the en passant disclosure of how traditional Gurdjieffian praxis was radically modulated by a hitherto unsuspected coterie; those photographs alone are as revealing as a C.C.T.V. camera.

Gurdjieff, who died in 1949, never went to Japan but Segal did - and became entranced. Arriving in a B-24 bomber carrying introductory letters from D.T.S. ("I could see I was on the beam with Suzuki right from the start") he hit the Zen Buddhist trail. As year followed year, Segal captured the interest of Madame Jeanne de Salzmann, Gurdjieff's de facto successor, and her son Michel the heir apparent. Respectively at Kita Kamakura and Ryutaku-ji monasteries Segal introduced the de Salzmanns to Suzuki and Soen Nakagawa Roshi (superb calligraphist, haiku composer, and innovatory celebrant of the tea ceremony using instant coffee and polystyrene cups).

The striking Sacred Dances which climax Peter Brook's film Meetings with Remarkable Men are supremely ranked in the portfolio of Gurdjieffian praxis, and no-one has prospered them more than Jeanne de Salzmann. In Japan she nevertheless allowed herself to be persuaded by an insistent Segal and Nakagawa that they needed buttressing by Zen-like meditation `sits'. Difficult to guess the critical moment when Madame de Salzmann acceded. Perhaps it was in cherry blossom time in 1966 when Suzuki, crying "Here, Mr Segal!", threw a startled cat at him. Certainly the grand policy shift delighted Segal: "Because you can sit for 100 years and still say, oh yeah, I feel good."

Segal died in 2000, aged ninety-six. And had he actually met Brook? Oh indeed, time after time (and sports ten photos to clinch it). As for his `enlightenment', one only wishes it were susceptible of forensic proof. Yet if this self-fixated pilgrim inspired just one "average person", let alone Peter Brook, that must suffice.
