Not just an Atlas! Absolutely Exquisite!

Since I am a visual learner, I have bought a lot of medical atlases in human and veterinary medicine over the years. They usually contain excellent color photos like this one but with only a short caption describing just what's in the image. This one however has a series of photos related to a case example of each condition which is briefly, but amply described in several paragraphs labeled Patient Story, Introduction, Epidemiology, Etiology & Pathophysiology, Clinical & Laboratory Diagnosis, Differential Diagnosis, Management, Followup, Patient Education & Resources, Provider Resources, and References. For me, a far better name for this book would be "Internal Medicine Atlas / Encyclopedia". It's well worth the price.

The Color Atlas of Internal Medicine has been an excellent addition to my clinical practice. I use it regularly as a quick reference and as a teaching tool while instructing residents. The format is consistent and concise. The index allows for rapid access of information. I am reassured by the frequent references and levels of evidence. The digital images are integrated in a way that artfully links pathology to diagnosis and treatment. The editors have truly created a well-rounded and accessible resource. It most definitely met my expectations!

Great book

Its a great book with ample amount of images and a very good explanation and therapeutics about diseases. Although, there are limited diseases but majority are present or at least the most common that are seen in the clinics. Definitely recommend the book whether just as a collector of atlases or for fun reading or as reference.

It also emerges that Einstein, while paying lip service to the emerging philosophy of logical empiricism, ended up siding de facto with the latter tendency.

Ryckman's work speaks to several groups, among them philosophers of science and historians of relativity. Equations are displayed as necessary, but Ryckman gives the non-mathematical reader enough background to understand their occurrence in the context of his wider philosophical project.

Thomas Ryckman received his Ph.D. in Philosophy from Columbia University in 1986. He has taught philosophy of science at Wesleyan University, The University of Illinois at Chicago, Northwestern University, the University of California, Berkeley, and Stanford University. He lives in San Francisco.

Extraordinary and illluminating work

Ryckman's book is an excellent work full of novel insights. Ryckman single-handedly revives the non-positivist "transcendental philosophy" insights of early discussions of General Relativity Theory. Much of this suggestive insight and interpretation was lost with the triumph of the logical positivist (later logical empiricist) appropriation of Einstein's relativity theory as showing that Kant's a priori and transcendental philosophy was overthrown by Einstein. Schlick and later Hans Reichenbach became the "standard" interpreters of General Relativity Theory by the end of the 1930s. Later American philosophers of science, such as Adolph Gruenbaum and Wesley Salmon, even where not agreeing with all claims of Reichenbach, very much followed his lead and tended to dismiss the neo-Kantian and phenomenological interpretations that were developed by European thinkers concerning relativity theory.
Ryckman discusses the work on unified field theories of mathematician Herman Weyl and the physicist Arthur Eddington, as well as the philosophical interpretations of general relativity by Ernst Cassirer and Emile Meyerson among others. Ryckman's grasp of both Husserl's phenomenology and of the relevant differential geometry is superb.
His long sections on Herman Weyl are tremendously informative and illuminating. I think Ryckman's interpretations of Eddington as a "transcendental philosopher" in the traditional sense of Kant and Husserl are a bit of a stretch, however, as Eddington's philosophical excursions were very much seat of the pants. Nevertheless Ryckman persuasively discredits those, like Susan Stebbing, who ridiculed Eddington's philosophical interpretations without understanding the physics and mathematics that led him to them.
A minor but significant weakness is Ryckman's totally downplaying and dismissing the influence of the German romantic idealist Fichte on Weyl's interpretation of field theory and matter, claiming that Weyl was interested only in Fichte religious thought. In fact Erhard Scholz has made a well documented case in various articles that not only Husserl but Fichte was a very strong influence on Weyl's interpretations, and Weyl says so himself in his autobiographical reminiscences.
Overall Ryckman's work is an outstanding contribution and I hope it will revive interest in phenomenological philosophy of physics among physicists as well as Anglo-American philosophers.

"Natural" coincidence as the anomaly

Dear Prof. Ryckman:

I've read your relativity book, and I think you came quite close on p. 60 ff, to the geometrical anomaly. I think if you go back over what you said, you will conclude that you were suggesting one exists, and you are right.

As I point out in the paper linked below, it is Einstein's notion of a "natural" coincidence, which he sets out explicitly in RELATIVITY, and by implication in the 1905 paper.

However, I think your problem identifying it is that, when you wrote the book, you were not sufficiently aware of of the set theory controversy which gave rise to another expression of what appears to be the world's oldest view of mathematics: natural mathematics (for a more extended treatment of this point of view, see P. Maddy's NATURALISM IN MATHEMATICS). I don't see Garciadiego or Grattan-Guinness cited in your book, nor is Cantor mentioned. We are in the middle of a renaissance of the historiography of set theory, and I benefited from it greatly. You will too.

Until you grasp the geometrical anomaly at the heart of the relativity simultaneity, I don't think you can understand the history fully. For example, "pratical geometry"--Einstein's term for his formulation of natural mathematics--arose from the need to avoid supposed "paradoxes" (Garciadiego is particularly illuminating on the subject of the supposed logical content of the "paradoxes"), and from the general feeling--of long standing (and by the way, you seem to feel it yourself)--that the "difference" between representation and reality had somehow to be addressed. Whether that is necessary or not, it is not achieved by "natural" coincidence--that much is, finally, obvious.

By the way, your qualms about Einstein's artful phrasing are also expressed in the Stachel and Howard book, in Sarkar's discussion of Einstein's 1905 paper on Brownian motion.

"Practical geometry" plays to internally consistent role in special or general relativity. It is not a principle, hypothesis or deduction. It is nothing. Its expression in relativity is "natural" coincidence--and that is nothing.

It should not, however, be surprising that we have been able, finally, to locate a term in relativity which we can show plays no internally consistent role in the argument (which is what was required to disprove it). As an advocate of natural mathematics, Einstein did not believe arguments were, or could be, internally consistent.

However, no one previously was able to show directly an anomaly. All commentators were able to do--and you in your book are one of them--was to express qualms about Einstein's approach. I am sure Einstein himself never was aware of the anomalous position of "natural" coincidence in relativity.

And if you do believe in natural mathematics, it doesn't matter. However, I do think it is worth noting that we can finally demonstrate that relativity is internally inconsistent.

I think Prof. Friedman left out the crucial "coordination principle"--"natural" coincidence--first, because he didn't notice it, but second, because its role is not to "coordinate": "natural" coincidence has no role AT ALL.

Where this leads, logically, is to the Pythagorean theorem. If we cannot get to general relativity because of "natural" coincidence, then the question arises once again: is the Pythagorean theorem internally consistent. I think not. I think any proof contains an impermissible "natural" coincidence. But I cannot locate it yet.

About the Author
Nancy Reisman's debut novel, The First Desire, was a New York Times Notable Book and a recipient of the Goldberg Award from the Foundation for Jewish Culture. Her story collection, House Fires, won the Iowa Award for Short Fiction. Her short fiction has appeared in many journals and anthologies, including Tin House, Glimmer Train, the Yale Review, SubTropics, Michigan Quarterly Review, Kenyon Review, Five Points, Narrative, The Best American Short Stories (2001), and The O'Henry Award Stories (2005). Reisman has received fellowships and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Tennessee Commission on the Arts, the Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing, and the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown. She teaches at Vanderbilt University and lives in Nashville, TN.

Potentially moving story is not so.

Reisman is a clean, precise writer who kept me turning the page in the hope that her characters, who I got to know well, would grow in depth and self knowledge; never happened. This story skated on top of the ice of life the whole way through - very disappointing for such well articulated and described individuals and situations.

A intriguing story, "told" by the author, not the characters.

I read the glowing review in the Sunday New York Times Book Review June 28th, 2015. I liked the title.wanted to get involved in the lives of these characters, in the family, what happens to them, the story. I looked forward to finding myself pulled inside the the characters' lives through the point of view of the protagonist(s). . Alas, Nancy Reisman "tells" the story herself. I'd have loved if one of the main character's voice "showed" me the story through her or his eyes, his or her senses, feelings, thoughts, dialog, . I thought that the publisher, Tin House ,would have published a more intimate writing style rather than keeping me, the reader, at a distance with dated omniscient point of view. The writing is lovely "telling." The story is there, but didn't take me on the promised journey. I put the book down and walked away, disappointed.

Exquisite. Life as a series of transitions, an illusion that never stands still

Trompe L’Oeil (i.e., Optical Illusion), by Nancy Reisman, is an exquisite emotional and literary portrait of a family. The plot follows the lives of the Murphy family over the course of approximately thirty-five years. There’s James, the father; Nora, the mother; Theo, the oldest child and only son; Katy, the second child; Molly, the child who was killed in a pedestrian accident when she was four years old; and eventually, Sara and Dalia, two daughters born in quick succession after Molly’s death. The Murphys are an affluent, educated, and artistic New England family with ties to Boston, Cambridge, Wellesley, and Cape Cod. By all intents and purposes, they’re an ordinary privileged family made unique by having been forced to weather the extraordinary crisis of a child’s death.

At the beginning of the book, seemingly at the peak of the family’s happiness and vigor, Molly is tragically run over and killed by a truck while dashing across a street in Rome during a family vacation. She was only four years old. In an instant, the illusion of the family’s perfect life and expected future vanishes. Can one event change everything? Can one tragic event propel every individual in the family—both existing and not yet born—on to another trajectory? Can it keep affecting each life repeatedly and endlessly into the future?

If you read this elegant and sublime novel, you’ll come away answering, “Why, yes, of course!” The novel will help you understand and experience all the subtle ways that this can be true.

If there is a purpose or theme to this novel, it seems to be a demonstration that we are all in a state of perpetual transition; that life is an illusion that never stands still; that the “world as one knows it is only the world of a moment.”

This novel is told in the past tense by an anonymous narrator. At first, I thought the narrator was the author and that I would be reading a typical third-person omniscient narration. But that didn’t happen. And I was confused. And to add to the confusion, the author keep interjecting random strange chapters into the novel, each focusing on a very detailed physical and emotional description of different famous works of art. These short art chapters (there are 13 of them in a novel with a total of 76 chapters)—see the list of the art works at the end of this review—were narrated in the second person, i.e., using “you” as the voice. They exist, perhaps as a literary device, to pull the reader intimately into the novel, to make us believe that we are the ones doing the observing of each artwork…and then, by projection, that we are the fly-on-the-wall voyeurs, intimately peeking in on the lives of the Murphy family.

The primary narrator is never conclusively revealed. It could be the author or one of the characters in the novel. If so, it is no doubt Nora, because she emerges as the book’s main character and is the one most interested in art. Regardless, the narrator is human, not God-like. The narrator infers all human thought and emotions. The narrator is a keen analytical observer of life, nothing more. In some ways, the narrator is like a person in an art gallery. The narrator studies each scene in the lives of this family just like a visitor to an art gallery might stand in front of a painting and study it carefully, trying to infer all knowledge that can be inferred from the slightest clue.

This is an emotionally rich and meditative novel. The imagery is as precise and expressive as any of the famous works of art described in the thirteen art chapters. A great deal of care was taken in choosing exactly how each scene is described. Every word has purpose and weight.

This is an exquisite novel of subtle beauty and abundant depth. If it were a reading assignment in an advanced contemporary American literature seminar, I could think of any number of major concepts contained within it that easily could lend themselves to academic analysis.

As promised, here is a list of the famous works of art that are described in detail within this book. I suggest that you do an Internet image search on each work and have it in front of you, to study, while you read each of these chapters. Doing this will significantly increase your reading pleasure. It will also help pull you inside the story, inside the lives of these characters, so you become that analytical and empathetic “fly-on-the-wall voyeur” that the author want you to become. If there is any connection between these works of art and the story within the novel, it is that the main character, Nora, keeps a beloved shoebox full of museum gallery postcards of famous works of art just like these. She takes the box out and studies her art treasure photos whenever she needs quiet time by herself to recharge her emotional strength.

Well written introduction to Nutrition Therapy

Although this book was copyrighted ten years ago (1996), the information about nutrition and nutrition therapy is still applicable. This is a good introductory book and an easy read as well. I like this book because it is formatted like a textbook: it has keyterms and objectives at the start of the chapter. The topics are discussed individually under a heading and topics are outlined clearly which saves reading time. The book has tables, figures, photos, case studies, and displays (highlighted and useful information about a topic, for example, "safety guidelines for microwave cooking", etc. At the end of each chapter, it has keys to practical application, key ideas, and study-discussion questions.

Great introduction

I am not a nutritionist nor dietician, but this book explains many advanced concepts in a way that I can understand and apply to my own life. I use it as a reference often when I am confused about a topic relating to nutrition. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about nutrition.
