It's the best I've ever used so 5....but really 4*

It could stay at a beginner level a bit longer, it gets complicated very quickly but if you combine it with the free PolishPod101 (for when you don't have a chance to read along) and use this for the reading, it helps a lot.

***Since this I've tried "Polski Bez Problemu" and I would say it is much better, but less available outside of Poland, unfortunately.

Well done, does the job.

I found the English accent quite pleasing. The package of book plus two tapes is effective, well done, and worth the money. My own background in languages is: my mother taught me German and Slovak when I was 15-17. I learned Latin and French in high school. I took three years of German in college. I have picked up Spanish more or less by living in California and Florida. My wife of 32 years is from Poland and she bought this book for me, and I learned Polish using it and from talking with her and her friends, and reading her books and newspapers. Then she helped me learn Russian! Great fun! I use these languages when communicating and conversing with friends and colleagues. Of course, Slovak helped me with Polish, and both helped me with Russian. Languages are my hobby. I like this book and tapes. It lived up to my expectations. But Polish is hard to learn because the pronunciation is harder than with other Slavic languages, so the learner has to make the effort. This product is adequate to the job.

A great installment in the series

This was a great read, building on everything that was enjoyable in the first book. Aleron Kong is clearly growing as an author. He keeps the reader's interest throughout the book and as the character has grown, as the stage has widened, the challenges have exceeded any growth by a wide margin. The author has succeeded in maintaining dramatic tension. The character seems to have more to lose, to be on the precipice of greater success or heartache with each chapter, which is a nice balancing act. In many stories in the genre, the mechanics overwhelm or the gains become increasingly pointless. Not so, here.

Aleron Kong has avoided many of the pitfalls of the genre, deftly balancing character growth and world-building with challenge that adds to the dramatic tension. This is a nice trick, considering we generally know the conventions of the genre, which usually means we know what to expect next.. but not so much here. Forging is like watching a poker tournament where the game started with a spotlight on one table, where the tournament has 128 tables with 8 players each. In the first book the main character made it past the first round. He has some winnings from the first round but the stakes just keep increasing. In poker, as they say, you're playing your opponents. Here, in round two, every one seated at the table was a winner from the first round. His opponents are smarter. There are familiar characters from the first round, but interesting new characters from this table, and some glimpse into the challenges he'll face if he makes it past this round. The outcome is becoming more highly speculative.

Every now and then the main characters play smart for a few hands and then the author has them go all in, putting everything on the table. It's fun to watch the characters lose a hand, now and then, watch the interplay between the characters as they fold a hand or raise the ante. It's fun watching the author double the blinds. It's fun to watch the author throw an interesting prize into the center of the table that changes the game ...

I'm looking forward to Alliances, the next installment in the series.

Ramblings of a madman

Take from my review what you will. It is just my opinion, and opinions change from one person to the next. This book was believable for at least 1 reason. For me there were many, but everyone who thinks it through should agree that at least this one point was consistent : progression. If you end up in a cave trying to solve thing for a reward you would stay for days if you were a hardcore gamer. I have. And if the people with me were friends i would stay longer. The simple answer is, if you want a story where the mc is ridiculously op and kills dungeons daily, read something else. This book delves into the human aspects of the litrpg genre. What would you honestly do? How would time progress to an outside veiwer? Look no further, aleron answers honestly.

An exciting follow-up to The Land: Founding, this book takes us on some adventures in The Land that we won't soon forget! Throughout battles, dungeon exploration, building up a community and dealing with life's journey, Aleron's books continually keep me entertained and feeling like I'm right there with the characters - the story just flows. Keep up the good work sir!

A beautiful Christian Fiction.

Morris Fenris’s “New Beginnings” is Book 3 in the Second Chances Trilogy, featuring characters we have already grown to know and love from Book 1, “Sara in Montana” and Book 2, “California Dreams.”
Sara and Trent are back, so is Sara’s sister, Grace and her fianc�, Michael. Their love stories may already be written, but they have adventures ahead of them, both in California and in Montana. When Grace stumbles upon her daughter harboring a too young puppy in her closet, it opens her up to meeting her neighbor, Tori – who is recovering from Breast Cancer, helped by Emily – a 9 year old with eyes too old for her age. While they get acquainted, Sara hires Jackson, a young Oncologist to run a clinic in Montana. Jackson currently lives in California, making him the perfect candidate to deliver a wedding dress to Grace before he travels to Montana. A good soul, he delivers the dress to the newly engaged Grace, meeting Tori while he does so, a moment that will eventually lead him to make a leap of love. The events seem mismatched, yet they are serendipitous and glorious in this Christian Fiction that relishes second chances and draws people together for a love inspired Romance that will make you smile.
A great book and a perfect ending to a wonderful series.

Say yes to new beginning!!

What can I say?? I loved this book, the overall content, plot and story line was immaculate. This kind of reminded me of my own life story. I was captivated by the title of the book, it really grabbed me. While reading the book I was in awe and I could not even quint, because I did not want to miss not one line of the story. It is a really awesome story about four couples who realized that you can love more than once. Good job Morris Fenris, New Beginnings is a one of a kind book and I hope you continue to thrive with each novel that you write. God bless you!!

Clean and fun. It's a happy-ending story that nicely ties in with previous stories. It's a refreshing scenario too. Of all the books out there, it's definitely a 5-star, but I rate according to my personal scale where I can make my best recommendations of books to my loved ones later on, but be it known that I find only positives about this story and no negatives, so enjoy!

In the past 25 years, a new model of human behavior has arisen. Originally termed sociobiology (a term that fell out of favor when its early proponents were labeled neo-Social Darwinists), this model seeks to apply evolutionary theory to human behavior. Wright (Three Scientists and Their Gods, LJ 8/88) does a fine job of explaining the current state of sociobiological theory and illustrates its tenets in an unusual way-by applying them to the life of Charles Darwin himself. Answering some critics, Wright argues that the evolutionary paradigm is not at all incompatible with support of religious or moral codes, liberal political agendas, or women's rights. Wright has written a fine state-of-the-art introduction to this increasingly important model of human psychology. Highly recommended as a single source on the topic for small libraries and as an addition for larger libraries needing to update their holdings in this still-developing area.

One of the most important books I've ever read.

My education has been steeped in what many writers refer to as the "Standard Social Scientific Model" - one of the assumptions of the SSSM is that environmental and cultural influences are the dominant consideration in shaping a human life, and that a person's nature is either a secondary or non-existent consideration. Because of this, I had been very resistant for years to any book focusing on human nature, or genetic explanations for simple or complex human behavior. Robert Wright's "The Moral Animal" changed all this. Part of what brought this about is the fact that Wright is such a clear and lucid writer. Frankly, had this book been written by someone of lesser skills with explanation, I probably would've put it down. Now, in my work as a psychotherapist, I'm much more likely to think in terms of what challenges of evolutionary importance are my clients having trouble coping with, such as issues regarding status, procreation, and things that would've spelled death to our neolithic ancestors. Furthermore, another conclusion that I've reached after reading this book is that Charles Darwin is given not given enough credit in psychology writing for his brilliant insights into human feelings and behavior; this needs to change. As Darwin said, if you want to understand people, just watch a troop of baboons, if you ever have the opportunity.

The Immoral Animal

Excellent introduction to Evolutionary Psychology, in part because of how well written it is and also in no small measure due to the force of the ideas the author introduces. All this, despite being nearly 20 years in print.

The chapter on self-deception itself is easily worth the price of the book. In sum, it seems, despite our collective avowed love of something called “the truth”, there is apparently more survival value in dissembling, to such an extent that the inclination is now hopelessly wired into our brains. Thus, the primary role of our conscious, “rational” mind is simply to rationalize our behavior, like a good trial lawyer, not only to others, but more importantly, to ourselves as well, with effectiveness in persuading others increasing the more success you have in duping yourself.

I can’t disagree. It’s been my observation throughout most of my life and to see it laid out in print along with an evolutionary explanation for why it should be so provides confirmatory evidence, at least for me. Not only that, when you look around and see it so prevalently on the news, with talking heads, with politicians, with bosses, coworkers, friends and even with yourself, the net result is not outrage so much as a sort of resignation to the notion that this is the way things are. The obvious lesson, of course, is to attempt to train yourself to keep your eyes and ears open, knowing full well that the voice you hear in your own head is the one you are most susceptible to believing in and the one least likely to possess even a modicum of credibility. Good luck.

The one remarkable place in the book where the author illustrates this error himself is where he indicates, after hundreds of pages of demonstrating otherwise, that humans are somehow capable of stepping outside of this perspective; that simply because we are “wired” to act according to our hunter-gatherer brains, does not mean we cannot chose to do otherwise. This, on the heels of a commentary about the hollowness of the notion of “free will”.

All the same, a quite remarkable book.

An excellent and well written book, The Moral Animal Delivers more than one would expect.

Wright is evidently a good writer. He easily attracts the reader's attention, and takes them on a journey to understand the basics of evolutionary psychology.
The scientific content in the book is very clear and refined in order to paint a good enough picture of the foundations of evolutionary psychology, providing historical accounts and useful analogies to explain various concepts from that field of study.
My main criticism of the book is directed towards the parts which I can imagine are someone else's favorite part of the book. Namely, the parts detailing Darwin's life. I fully understand the literary significance of using Darwin as an example, but as a case to support Evo Psych, it seems like the writer is cherry picking events which fit his explanatory models. I believe simply using anthropological and psychological evidence is more appropriate to convince the reader, but I guess the writer had a different idea in mind. All in all, those parts were informative, but I found myself skimming them rather than actively reading them.
Perhaps another point I disliked about the book is how the writer claims he will always point out his sociopolitical inferences from the science, in order to not confuse the reader, but ends up adding his views about the ethical, social, and political implications of the science without clearly pointing out they are merely his personal opinions, at least not all the time.
In conclusion, Robert Wright is more than excellent in conveying the important ideas. And I believe The Moral Animal is a must read for any one who is interested in Evolutionary Psychology and the origin of human nature.
