Excellent, concise EE reference

It's been over 10 years since I completed my electrical engineering studies. I was looking for something that would help refresh my memory, and that I could refer to for formulas and graphs, as I jump back in to do my master's degree. This book seemed a little pricey, but compared to the other books out there, this one is the only thing I could find that met all my requirements: compact, sturdy, and thorough, covering all topics of electrical engineering, from analog to digital (I don't care so much about power systems, but that's in there too).

Formulas, graphs, and tables are all clearly laid out and easy to read/understand. No space is wasted with sample problems, which are best reserved for textbooks and test-prep books. Figures are used extensively to depict graphs, circuits, etc., which add nicely to the readability of the sections.

The book itself is nice and compact (the size of a medium sized paper back novel), and very well made. It appears to be a sewn book (same binding as for hardcover), and the cover is sturdy and vinyl coated.

I see that the earlier edition (Electrical Engineering) is available from Amazon for a discounted price. As far as I can tell (from comparing the table of contents and page numbers), the first 9 chapters are the same. The new edition adds one more chapter - Chapter 10: Electric Machines.

He warns that its promise could go unrealized because contemporary mobility is reshuffling the human genome, obscuring the DNA details by which experts can trace the geographic ancestry of contemporary ethnic groups. To rescue genetic information, Wells heads National Geographic Society's Genographic Project, which collects and analyzes DNA from volunteers to create a database of the human genome as it was before the Industrial Revolution. He relays the personal stories and ethnic lineage of five such volunteers while explaining both the DNA markers and the logic by which he and his colleagues can reliably place and date a person's ancestry. Ancestry with a capital A

Deep Ancestry sure puts a new spin on try to trace my great-grand parents! The Genographic Project takes world wide the search for European ancestry in Bryan Stykes'"Seven Daughters of Eve" I sense the urgency to contact remaining peoples who have not mingled their genes with "outsiders". Maybe the Amazon Basin might provide more examples. Of interest with my own Irish roots were details of how Europeans became farmers from an earlier hunter gatherer lifestyle. It was maybe triggered in the first place by the sudden dry and colder Younger Dryas Period of 11000BP.
Questions are raised - Why 170 000 years for "First Eve" but only some 60 000 years back to "first Adam" ? How did the Australian Aborigines get there without leaving a trace along the SE Asia route? Is the evidence buried in the coastal plane flooded as the oceans rose with thawing of Pleistocene Ice.? The Project has members around the globe. I await with interest my next visit to Adelaide to meet up with Alan Cooper from the Project team.

We've got history in our genes

What a marvellous little book! I was taken by surprise so many times during my reading, whenever I thought I knew what the author is about at the beginning of many of his stories. In a way, this is like a crime fiction book written by a clever writer that catches you off guard and it reveals the killer only at the last page. The writing style is deceivingly simple; Spencer gets over the scientific details of genetics in a few paragraphs where he tells you in plain English everything you need to know to understand this book. The book then flows smoothly and he managed to make it so easy for you to follow the main ideas and try to decipher what is probably the greatest puzzle of all: the origins of human race. You will have a few surprises.

You might have seen the National Geographic documentary "The Journey of Man". Its author is none other than same Spence Wells. He is only 37 years old, and very, very bright. I have to emphasize again the writing style: very simple, yet it explains clearly complex concepts. He talks science, yet he is humorous and light. He uses sometimes numbers and probabilities, but the book is in general built around stories of five people chosen to represent the main haplogroups (families or a clans of people that share the same genetic properties transmitted over many generations) in the history of mankind. Spencer Wells is currently a National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence and the director of Genographic Project. It is a great and fascinating role he is playing. The goal of this project is to collect about 100,000 genetic samples from people around the world that live in still pristine conditions: that is they live in the same area their families lived for a long time. This information is stored in a database and by applying sophisticated algorithms; we should be able to determine how we have evolved in time, how we migrated and how we came to become the people of today. I was a little bit sceptical about this entire concept, but the book convinced me. You will have to read it to understand what really means. It is a powerful idea.

The book is based on five stories told people with very different backgrounds. Each story will astound you. You will also have a better understanding of what genetic archaeology is. If you are familiar with DNA, it will make even more sense to you. The DNA is seen more and more like a cryptic library that holds many secrets about our evolution. Segments of code will reveal relationships never thought possible. This book does not go that much in detail, but it does tell you the story in a nicely narrated style that takes you step by step through the various haplogroups patterns, like a detective, and come up with unexpected conclusions.

In the end you will see why scientists believe that the Adam and Eve, the original parents of all the people that populated this planet today, lived around 60,000 years ago in Africa. If you take the time to think about it, you realise how amazing this is. In 2,000 generations we evolved from an ape like humanoid to the generation of the Internet. The book will take you through the Ice Age, the disappearance of Neanderthal, the conquest of Asia, the mystery of Australian Aborigines, invasion of Americas and many other adventures. Back to Africa, you will get to know how genetically diverse this continent is. Did you know that two of the oldest haplogroups (tribes) still live in Africa today and probably they speak the oldest language, perhaps the first languages? These people speak the so-called click languages that are more sophisticated in the variety of sounds than our modern languages.

great book that can be transformative

Great book! This is well written and has a great deal of technical information that is "translated" to help readers understand and transform it into usable knowledge! Mindfulness can be a broad term but in this book, it is operationally defined to make it become something beyond an abstraction. Most interesting aspect of the book is the connection between evidence based, that is the scientific basis that meditation and other ways of activating the neural pathways responsible for creating changes in awareness. I highly recommend this book for those who wish to explore the interesting dynamics between mindfulness, neurobiology and the evolution of spirituality being a good part of daily healthy living, The brain is a great universe and the heuristic construct of the mind is indeed a working part of Being.

Ricky Hanson is brilliant! I have been interested in meditation for years and have read numerous book on the subject but, not one had explained the physiology aspect of meditation the way this one does. Surely, we all know it is good to meditate and to have a daily practice, but why exactly? This book actually easily guides the reader to understand all the intricate neurological processes that occur with each and every action, reaction or, lack thereof. Now, I understand what goes on in my brain when I meditate and how it helps my overall health and well being. It is no longer a guessing game or hopeful thinking. I have found the last book I will ever need on the subject and it also has guided practices.

Not the best starting point

Part of my mission has been to purchase as many of the Shibari books as I can and read through them. This is written with British spelling which really should not be a problem for most. The book has a number of the basic Shibari ties that one would expect to see. The grammar in the book often is incorrect. It looks like this was run through a translate software product. This is still manageable for most people as one can figure out what was meant. The real issue is that the only pictures in the entire book are on the front and back cover. Given the weak descriptions, it is challenging to figure out what is meant. The descriptions on ties that I am already familiar with are challenging to understand.

I recently learned of Shibari, and this book I took out of curiosity. Here I encountered a lot of interesting information about the history of Shibari, but also on the current experience of these techniques "of erotic bondage." Everything I've read seems very exciting. For me, this book is very interesting and I recommend it to all who are interested in Shibari.

I really enjoyed reading this book. The Japanese bondage seduction techniques are so interesting and I think it is the best among other seduction techniques. This book is introducing the modern Shibari technique which is the best technique in Japan now and I really think those techniques would make sex is much more exciting than ever before.

Grade 6 Up Freedman's book has two levels of appeal: that of the wonderfully conceived and vividly executed paintings (full-color reproductions of stunning paintings by such they-were-there artists as George Catlin, Karl Bodmer, Albert Bierstadt, uncluttered by inclusion of photographic every-detail), and that of an informative, accessible text. The title may by itself mislead some, as Freedman presents not a story or description of one hunt but descriptions of the many ways that buffalo hunts were madeby Indians, and later by the whites whose ferocious, firearm slaughter of the ``shaggies''as they were calledbrought the species to near extinction. This is superior to two recent picture books on the general subject of buffalo: Dorothy Hinshaw Patent's Buffalo: the American Rison Today (Clarion, 1986) and Cary B. Russell Freedman is the author of nearly 50 books for young people. His work includes, for Clarion, the Newbery Medal book Lincoln: A Photobiography, the Newbery Honor book Eleanor Roosevelt: A Life of Discovery, and more recently, The Voice That Challenged a Nation: Marian Anderson and the Struggle for Equal Rights, which received both a Newbery Honor and the Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Award. Mr. Freedman lives in New York City.

Buffalo Hunt by R. Freeman: A review

Author, Russell Freeman, writes an informational (nonfiction) book targeting grades 3 - 7 about the interdependence of the Plains Indian Tribes and the North American Bison. This book documents a way of life few non-Indian people were privileged to see. The bison shaped the culture of these tribes, the tribes usually killed only what they needed and used all parts of the animal. The various tribes of the plains husbanded the bison herds and the land on which they grazed to insure the survival of this essential source of food and shelter. The buffalo hunt was accompanied by supplication to the spirits and shaman of the tribes and was participated in by all, though only men killed buffalo. The job of others was to clean the kill and cure the meat and hides. The author describes more than one hunting technique. Also, he explains how the Indians developed into skillful horsemen as they evolved from hunting on foot to the use of wild horses.
The slaughter of bison populations as whites encroached upon and gradually took over Indian lands resulted in the end of a way of life and the near annihilation of the Plains Indian Tribes in the 50+ years from around 1830 to 1888.
The book is illustrated with reproductions of original paintings and drawings of the period by artists such as George Catlin and Karl Bodmer who were adventurer-artists traveling alone, or nearly so, through regions that only a few fur trappers and traders had seen before this time.
Freeman has crafted a book with a balanced combination of illustration and information. His book would surpass the most rigorous standards for great nonfiction. It presents information objectively and without bias or opinion and uses beautiful works of art for illustration - the art of both the white and the Indian, from the period under scrutiny. It explains a way of life that has been lost yet does not belabor the point, marginalize the people, or sentimentalize the topic. I would recommend this book highly. It could be used for art projects in schools as well as for factual writing assignments. The author has written other respected informational books for children, e.g., Lincoln: A photobiography, and another about the Wright brothers.

I dread reading textbooks for classes because they tend to be so dull, but this is actually an enjoyable read

Interesting, helpful, thorough, and relevant.

This book goes beyond the bare bones of environmental engineering, and invites the readers to think about current environmental problems and compare the possible solutions. Normally, I dread reading textbooks for classes because they tend to be so dull, but this is actually an enjoyable read.

Definitely worth the purchase.

It's a very good effort to present issues up to date�

It seems to me this is a very good textbook for an undergraduate course, or introductory course, on the subject of Environmental Engineering. Presenting many issues, rather controversial, but up to date. Th sustainability issue has been acceptably treated.

I liked the presentation of different themes, as well as, the application problems and group discussions.
