It is a Holzer classic. Interesting and well written, as are most of Holzer's works. Even though the book may be dated it still contains many interesting stories. Many of these sites may longer be there, it is still an interesting read.

Wanted to like it but I can't get past the crappy writing

The Good:
I think this book has some good ideas and although it isn't really an instructional guide or particularly rich with information it serves as an inspiration to dive into something a little more serious like John Holt. I like that she integrates her experiences with her family into the book.

The Not-so-Good:
This woman is a terrible writer. There, I said it. Her target audience seems to be people who know nothing about unschooling philosophy from the way that she addresses the reader but then she consistently demeans her target audience with comments like, "Open your eyes and see how brainwashed we truly are..." Um, yeah, people generally don't like to be told that they're ignorant and doing this within the first 5 pages isn't that great of an idea either. Throughout the book she sounds so high and mighty for breaking the parenting paradigm. Later in the book she tells us that we might cry from the guilt when we realize what we have been doing to our children. It's kind of ironic how the tone of the book seems so negative when she's telling us to think positive. The bolding of certain sentences is distracting. I feel like I'm IN SCHOOL BEING PUNISHED, which I assume isn't really what she was going for. Perhaps she should take some of her own advice and trust her reader's ability to recognize what's important. I had to quit halfway through because there is only so much crappy essay I can read before I feel compelled to whip out the red pen.

In a nutshell:
Probably not worth it there are better books out there. Next time you're thinking of writing a book consider a ghost writer because you're making us look bad.

If you thrive on chaos and poverty...

Since I paid full price for this book (which I rarely do) and wanted to review it, I forced myself to finish it. Here's what I've got:

The writing is not very good. The book feels like an extremely long run-on sentence. That said, I could have overlooked the poor writing and organization if it were possible to glean some useful advice/information from it. Unfortunately, that was not the case.

This book is largely a summary of Dayna and Joe's parenting philosophy - trust your children to educate themselves (some degree of truth there), provide for all of their wants (since wants are, according to Dayna, needs) and let them use their time as they see fit. Their kids have no responsibilities and must follow no rules. They may watch as much TV as they like, eat what they like (in fact Dayna prepares a buffet of things that each person in the family likes to eat for meals and brings it to them where ever they are), sleep when they like, etc. If they don't feel like cleaning their room or the mess they made with craft supplies, Dayna is happy to do it for them. If they want to take lessons or go on a trip, Dayna and Joe oblige. The entire first half of the book I thought that this couple must be independently wealthy - who else could have the resources to cater to their 4 kids' every whim?

By the end of the book I discovered that this couple has interesting, although not unique, ideas about how money is made and how it should be spent. Dayna is happy to spend money on drum sets her son stops using after a few lessons, gymnastic classes her son quits after the first session, etc. Money, Dayna explains, comes from the universe when you want it and focus your thoughts on it. I wish I could say that I had never heard of this philosophy before, but I have grown up surrounded by missionaries who sit at home and pray for the Lord to put food on the table. If you can hear the scorn in my voice then you can imagine the cycles of poverty, debt and disillusionment that I've witnessed. You can also imagine how well I think that philosophy would apply to the North Koreans who are so impoverished that they are resorting to cannibalism. Boy, I wish someone would just tell them to trust the universe...

There is also very little advice/information about education in this book. Any learning that Dayna's kids do is, apparently, appreciated for it own sake and not for any possible utility they may gain from it. This runs contrary to every conviction that I have about raising and educating children since I believe that giving children the tools they need to survive, and hopefully thrive, as adults is the sole purpose of parents. What good are your expressions of love if you send your kids out into the world to be crushed?

Besides not having any long term goals for their children (I'm sure that counts as trying to control them), this couple also seems to enjoy a rather unique situation where the father works from home and has a flexible schedule - which means that Dayna can run to the grocery store by herself when she doesn't have time to take her kids "along in partnership" or that she can take a break from the kids anytime she's going crazy. I wonder if she would be able to sustain her positive energy with a husband who works long hours and travels regularly?

All in all this book was a great disappointment. My advice for prospective unschoolers? Pick up a copy of "Boundaries with Kids," and memorize it. Then proceed to find creative ways to incorporate learning into your everyday life. It's as easy as putting Pandora's "Johann Sebastian Bach Radio" on the stereo and a big, glorious map of the world on the wall. Happy learning! :)

Excellent book, until you realize the author doesn't practice what she preaches

Unlike some recent negative reviews, I've actually read the book, and found it very inspiring. It really helped me understand the mindset and philosophy behind unschooling, which has been far more helpful than any laundry list of parenting tips and tricks I've read to date. With our 3 year old son, asking myself "would I treat an adult this way?" as Dayna suggests in the book has been immensely helpful in learning to raise him in an environment where he is a respected member of the family.

EDIT: I really wish I'd started out learning about unschooling from another source in the first place. Had I bought a physical copy of this book, I'd sooner compost it than give it away to anyone. See the below links for more about who Dayna Martin is, and why she shouldn't be trusted.

A Must-Read for Superitendents, Parents, Educational Policymakers and School Principles

A must read for all genuinely concerned education policymakers. The authors state what should be obvious but often is not, which is that the expansion - and even (may I dare!) the saturation -of opportunity will inevitably drive achievement in ways that mandated state standards that reproduce privilege never will. The book is not just well written and a must read, it allows the reader to imagine all sorts of possibilities. I highly recommend it.

A calm and balanced appeal to use what we know works

Duncan and Murnane are professors of education at U.C. Irvine and Harvard respectively. We have a crisis in education, one hard to address sensibly in a politicized climate of well-meaning but inflexible advocacy. In clear and simple exposition, the authors point out that our schools today no longer facilitate the "American Dream" of upward mobility. Instead, children of low-income families are more likely to face economic hardships while children of high-income families have structural advantages which secure them the jobs of the future. Education was once the great leveler, but no more. The term the authors use for this fork in the road is "divergent destinies," a phrase congenial to a feudal society and deadly to a democratic one. We read regularly about income disparity in America, as wealth of "Gilded Age" or Roman patrician proportions accumulates in the accounts of the super-rich. Now we learn that the poor are closed out from rising to the middle. How long before the curse of class consciousness and class conflict become American political forces? Not long unless we address the problems this book outlines and the prescriptions it offers.

Just as its analysis of the problem is neither judgmental nor hysterical, but calmly reasoned, the solutions it offers are a blend of the best of all solutions tried. Take accountability. This book does avoids the polemics of the battlefield of "accountability." It argues for "sensible accountability." Accountability alone, as in exit tests which keep the poor from graduating, without the assistance needed to master the material one is held accountable for (and the teachers, and the schools, and the state, and the country) is destructive and not "sensible."

"Restoring Opportunity" takes its prescriptions from successful programs and describes them in detail so the essence of the program is made vivid as well as how the parts work to reinforce each other. This makes the book very readable and a good example of teaching.

The descriptions show a grasp of the realities of the classroom and deep admiration for the skills of successful teachers, as well as sympathy for our least experienced teachers so often thrown into the most difficult of classes to manage. This makes the book very readable and a good example of teaching.

Since 2006 I have been working on the problem of how to overcome our underestimation of our ability to grasp probability and risk, and the income disparities caused by having a numerate class, drawn to hedge funds, and an innumerate one, drawn to lotteries. My book, Book of Odds, From Lightning Strikes to Love at First Sight, recently published aims to teach without seeming to. That is what this book does brilliantly.

One of the mantras of the authors is that we must stop seeking "silver bullets," because they don't exist. In the politicized world of "silver bullets," your opponents deserve little consideration for they are vampires. In the world of "Restoring Opportunity" no effort is wasted on imaginary enemies. The focus is on understanding the nature of the problem and proposing sensible and internally consistent solutions.

This is an important book.

Moore's third work of fiction (after Alligator) imagines the impact one such disaster—the 1982 sinking of the Ocean Ranger—has on Helen O'Mara, a mother of three small children whose husband, Cal, dies at sea. The narrative jumps in time from Helen's life with Cal, the accident itself and the years after in which Helen tries to keep her life intact. Whether it is Helen longing for companionship, designing wedding dresses or learning yoga, everything she does is done with a view to Cal. Most scenes are quietly reflective, and Moore's strength is her ability to inject evocative images and expressive tones to otherwise static and overly earnest passages (as in Is this what a life is? Someone, in the middle of cleaning the bathroom, remembers you tasting the ocean on your fingers long after you're gone.) There's no plot—the narrative consists of fragments from Helen's life—and while some readers may find the patchwork engaging, the absence of a through-line makes the work meandering. (Feb.)

In the present, much of the focus is on son John, an engineer whose job (ironically, analyzing risk on oil rigs) takes him all over the world. Now he is on his way home and trying to come to terms with the fact that a woman he barely knows is carrying his child. The novel’s episodic nature somewhat diminishes its emotional impact, especially toward the end. Could not finish it.....

This book was a gift from a dear friend....so I tried. I think she chose it because, like the main character, I was suddenly widowed at a fairly young age.
I read 100 pages and then decided life is too short and there are too many other books I want to read.
This is the first book I have read by this author who has won a prize for an earlier work. Her style seems to be based on some advice she was once given to insert details and descriptions. She does have a LOT of details which are for the most part, not illuminating in any way. I remember one particular tedious section when Jane is buying a cookie at an airport ....excruciating detail on the store clerk and the difficulty she had in finding the cookie Jane wanted. I finally gave up the book when I came upon two non plausible parts. Jane has had a week long fling with John in a country foreign to both. No further contact until Jane calls him on his cell phone 6 months later. No explanation as to how she had his cell number as they were apparently pretty much inseparable during this week and parted with the understanding that it was over. BUT after Jane hangs up on John we are told that John doesn't have Jane's number to call her back. LOOK ON YOUR CELL PHONE JOHN - even I (old as I am) know that. Then we are told that in 1982 or 1983 when John (age 10 or 11) goes to a school counselor with troubling dreams after the death of his father, the school counselor asks him if he "had an orgasm" because the dreams had some sexual overtones. Please - I cannot believe any school counselor would use that word or make that inquiry....
Others seem to love this book - but I can't figure out why.

A Powerful Novel Brilliantly Written

Just beyond the middle of this incredible novel, the central character, Helen, is part of a yoga class. And it serves as the perfect metaphor for the theme of the novel. The yoga instructor, as they do, is uttering those ��yoga��clicheVs about finding inner peace, blah, blah, blah. And Helen thinks, ��I am supposed to achieve balance.�� This might well have been the opening of the novel.
In 1982 The Ocean Ranger, a vessel owned by an oil company, sinks in the North Atlantic. And everyone aboard drowns, including Cal, Helen's husband, leaving her with three young children and, unknown to her at the time, another on the way. In 2008 Helen has yet been unable to come to any resolution about his death and the impact it has had upon her life while she waits for her oldest and only son, John, to arrive from his world travels with a woman who is pregnant with his first baby, a woman with whom he had a one-week affair in Iceland seven months earlier. So in a sense this novel is about that one moment in time except, of course, it isn't.
We are provided with up-close and personal grief and what it has done to the central character and, in turn, her four children, most especially the older three. It is very powerful and so artistically handled in the hands of Lisa Moore, the author of Alligator. (I had been ill-informed about February being a sequel to Alligator. This one is even more so.
Helen has spent her adult life being ��grateful for all the brief escapes�� offered her, often escapes she creates by allowing her mind to imagine what happened and how others responded and thought. If ever there was a postmodern existential novel that reaches out and grabs, this is it. There is no end to grief. None.
Lisa Moore is a master at point of view, skillfully allowing us into Helen's head (and occasionally other characters' heads, especially her son John's) with what essentially are scattered thoughts that all of us have, seemingly disconnected ones. She bounces back and forth in time, giving us little pieces, almost like doing a picture puzzle but without the package cover to guide us. And that is the beauty of the writing; it is so lacking in a linear plot line. So as a reader you say, ��Wow. So that is what happened back...��
The style fascinates me. But it could take some ��getting used to�� for readers who have not experienced what I will call a collage style, one in which thoughts from the present and past exist together, often in the same paragraph. But it is a wonderful style if the reader gives the first few pages a chance. There are no quotation marks for dialogue, not even question marks when a question is ask. But it works brilliantly and makes this such a unique reading experience.
Helen's has been a rudderless life. She is clearly depressed, a woman who refuses any of the drugs suggested to her, a woman who parents with a because I told you to attitude. Now in her mid-fifties she wonders if she might find love somehow, somewhere. I will not disclose how she goes about doing so. But we know nothing will work out because it is a world where essentially love seems not to exist much, at least not for Helen who truly did love Cal. And he apparently loved her as well.
I can honestly say this is one of the most moving novels I have ever read.

Emerging from Grief

This book by Canadian novelist Lisa Moore is on the long list for the 2010 Man Booker Prize. It is a curious choice, because it is a quiet book, entirely domestic in scale, in which very little actually happens. I suppose that Anne Enright's THE GATHERING (the 2007 winner) would be the closest comparison. Lisa Moore's novel is similar in being centered around a single family in the aftermath of a death, and moving freely through several decades. But Moore does not have Enright's hysteria or obsessive sexuality, and I appreciate her for that. What she does have is sheer good writing, rich characters, and a sense of truth.

At fifty-six, Helen O'Mara is the mother of four grown children and the grandmother of two. She had only just become pregnant with her last child when her husband Cal was drowned in the collapse of the Ocean Ranger oil rig off the coast of Newfoundland in 1982 (a real historical disaster). For more than a quarter-century, she has mastered her grief, seeing her children grow to adulthood, and building up a business for herself as a dressmaker. But she feels unfulfilled and lonely, and will remain so until she comes to terms with Cal's death. The book jacket suggests that there may be undisclosed secrets here, but that is not Moore's way. The facts are as they always were, but the unexpected homecoming of her son John (who also works in the oil industry) triggers a series of memories in Helen, jumping freely in meticulously-labeled short sections between 1972 and the present, which eventually lay out her entire adult life in some kind of a pattern, and enable her to think towards a future.

When reading (and not especially liking) Ayelet Waldman's recent RED HOOK ROAD, another novel about a family in a coastal town dealing with grief, I put down my disenchantment to a personal dislike for novels that were small-scale and domestic, rather than dealing with large themes. But FEBRUARY is even smaller in scale, and I enjoyed it greatly. Mostly because Moore writes so well. Little descriptive touches such as "the scrudge-squeak of a naked foot on the royal blue gym mats" in a yoga class, or a tired woman sitting down in a coffee shop who "unzips her jacket and sighs so deeply she falls into herself like a cake." But more than that -- she writes the way people think and talk, in interrupted phrases and non-sequiturs, illuminated by sudden flashes of insight. Yes, there are flaws in the book: it tends to meander a little, some promising ideas go nowhere (such as the fact that John works for a company that perpetuates the same risks that killed his father), and the conclusion is perhaps too pat. But the sense of being inside the mind and heart of such a well-observed character counts for a great deal.

It's a good book, excellent examples with some c-codes that you can implement on your own designs. By looking this examples, it really open your mind to new programming strategies and tools in a neat format. I recommend this book if you don't have a lot of programming experience like me.

Flowcode 6 , the book , leaves something to be desired.

some concession must be given to the author due to the fact that certain grammatical nuances are found to be missing , and this is normal when one is writing in a language that isn't their natural tongue . Linked this with a hit -or - miss bit of editing and you have a book that has great promise but misses the mark at times. Certain descriptions are a little confusing and the full flow chart is not always presented in the book as you progress through the book and if you download it from the web it is missing the detailed information explaining the reason for its structure.
It wasn't clearly stated, where the downloadable files could be found, in the book. I had to track them down, [...] by searching their site.
I guess as one more resource it has some value. or you might just down load the files and go from there.

Amazing, Flowcode reduces hours of work to minutes

5 stars here for the book, but also for Flowcode, which I have only just discovered. Up to now we have been able to go as far as drawing a program flowchart but then we had to write a progam to follow the chart. Now Flowcode does it for us, amazing. Matrix (Flowcode's creators) provide a full ramge of hardware, as E-boards, which allow us to build a circuit with no soldering. Best order one of the bundles, software and hardware.

Flowcode has excellent training courses (best on their website), but I find it helpful to read this very well-written book. (There can never be enough examples). After a brief introduction he launches straight into projects of increasing complexity and we learn as we go. Flowcode is essentially a visual programming system and like CAD once you get used to where everything is it becomes second nature.

I wish I had discovered this technology years ago. It is a tremendous time saver, reducing hours of work to minutes.

A potentially good text which suffers from numerous errors.

I expect a text published by Oxford Univ. Press to be thoroughly edited. Unfortunately, the text has numerous errors in the answer key and some errors in presenting the text problems. The text provides interesting historical connections and discusses the underlying theorems more than is typically done in IB hl math texts.

Little boys' favorite read

Of course my 6yr old twin boys love this book! I wanted a book that was more pictures than words. This is exactly that, but in a good way. You want to admire the machine, not be distracted by words. My toddler, Stormageddon, has since destroyed the book beyond repair. This only means I plan on purchasing a new copy. Great book! You may feel the urge to yell POWAAAAAA upon opening.

Everything from Cars to Supercars to Hypercars!

You may be intrigued by how Top Gear has reviewed the 100 Fastest Cars. The cars in this book have gotten everything from one star to five stars. The Bugatti Veyron (that's my FAVORITE!) got five stars, while others such as the Honda Civic Type R got three stars. Other cars to see here are the Koenigsegg CCX, the Lotus Exige S, and the Audi R8 V10.

Bought this for my 12 year old son. He requested it but hasn't read it as it is a Christmas present. He is a big fan of Top Gear so I am sure it will meet his expectations
