Common Sense on Mutual Funds. New Imperatives for the Intelligent Investor Forward by Peter L.Bernstein.

"Other investment executives used to roll their eyes about Vanguard's Bogle, but his rules work."-Newsweek

When Jack Bogle speaks, people listen-whether they are fans or not. As the senior chairman and founder of the Vanguard Group, one of the two largest mutual fund organizations in the world, he has single-handedly transformed the industry by championing better funds at lower costs to the investor. A leading thinker and visionary whose ideas and principles have been adopted by countless investors, his name is as synonymous with excellence in mutual fund investing as Warren Buffett's is with excellence in stock investing. Now, in Common Sense on Mutual Funds, Bogle takes a critical look at the mutual fund industry and how we invest, and charts a compelling course for change.

Written in Bogle's inimitable style, this eye-opening book examines the fundamentals of mutual fund investing alongside industry practices that are often in conflict with a sound long-term investment program. Common Sense on Mutual Funds shows investors how to revolutionize their portfolios by embracing simplicity and then avoiding industry pitfalls. Just as Thomas Paine argued for a new way of thinking about independence in "Common Sense," so Bogle sets forth a new way of looking at mutual funds. He presents a platform for intelligent investing and then uncovers the ills that beset the mutual fund industry, serious ills that thwart our efforts to accumulate adequate financial resources. He analyzes costs, scrutinizes asset size, exposes tax inefficiencies, warns of "empty suit" directors, and reveals the severe conflict between fund principles and fund pro-motion. Emphasizing long-term investing and asset allocation, Bogle finds in simplicity the solution to the riddle of fund selection by investors. From stock and bond funds to global investing and index funds, Common Sense on Mutual Funds provides insight, illumination, and enlightenment.

For more than 30 years, Bogle has championed the rights of the fund shareholder, for he believes that investing is first and last about people's hopes and fears and individual goals. In Common Sense on Mutual Funds, he speaks eloquently about individual investors and how their interests are not being well-served: "The ills and injustices suffered by mutual fund investors are not so dissimilar to those our forebears suffered under English tyranny. . . . I have no quarrel with management companies focusing on profits. But the trade-off between the profits that accrue to fund shareholders and the profits that accrue to the fund management companies seems subject to no independent watchdog, despite the fact that it is the shareholders who actually own the mutual funds."

Organized as a series of essays on the investment issues of the day, this insider's view of the industry makes vital information on mutual funds accessible to experienced investors as well as those just beginning. A veritable treasure chest filled with insight and guidance from a true leader, Common Sense on Mutual Funds is an invaluable addition to every investor's library. Bogle's message, amid the cacophony of investment advice, is clear and simple: common sense will rule the day.

About the Author
John C. Bogle (Philadelphia, PA) is the founder and Senior Chairman of The Vanguard Group, Inc., the largest no-load mutual fund group with over $200 billion in assets and five million shareholders.

From Publishers Weekly
Not that many years ago, an average bookstore might have had two or three books on mutual funds filed away in the business section. Today, as the number of Americans who invest in mutual funds continues to grow, such books take up several aisles in a section of their own. There are guides for data junkies and mathphobes, books that tell how to make a killing and books that tell how to avoid the coming disaster. A few classics stand above the clutter. Bogle on Mutual Funds is one of them. Now the same author has added another. While the first book aimed at educating beginners, the new one seeks to persuade experienced investors to discard received wisdom that isn't so wise after all. While no 450-page work on mutual funds with lots of charts can be considered fun summer reading, the book is always informative and the writing never worse than painless and sometimes quite lively. Bogle speaks with a rare authority. On one hand, he is the founder of Vanguard mutual funds, the second-largest mutual fund company in the world. So he knows the business from the ground up. On the other hand, Vanguard has always been famous for running the lowest-cost mutual funds, funds that eschew loads, engage in sensible strategies and return all profit to the investors. So Bogle is also a leading consumer advocate. That rare combination, mixed with years of serious research and a dash of style, makes Bogle an unparalleled guide to the world of mutual funds. Do it yourself, don't hire a financial advisor
By kevin yee
People say that investing is complex and confusing and that you need to hire a financial advisor to help you on investing your money for a comfortable retirement. After reading this book, I found that much of what you hear from the financial industry is wrong and is designed to confuse the retail investor. The truth of the matter is that investing your money is not complex and that you do not need a financial advisor. If you listen and follow the advise from much of the professional investor class about where you should put your money, you would be making them rich at the expense of your savings. John Bogle is doing us retail investor's much needed truth about how to manage your money and has the roadmap and proof to tell us, what most others in the industry has long kept silent and a secret. The truth to investing is that it is not secret, do it yourself, it is not complex, and don't listen to the advise of professional portfolio managers who are out to take your money while pretending to have your back, they don't because it is at their expense. Go with Bogle's folly, read the book, and follow the wisdom in it, and you will do better than 96% of all funds managed by the portfolio managers.

sometimes simplicity must be exhaustively explained to be believed
By muddy glass
this is *the* book to read on mutual funds. it's a hefty tome coming in at 600+ pages, but fear not. this book does not read like a dry financial report. bogle is opinionated and his writing flourishes with reminders of his personality amidst the endless but important charts and tables. to spice things up, bogle makes references to a wide variety of sources including shakespeare, thomas paine, scripture and even hegel! by the time you're done, you'll know *everything* you've ever wanted to know (and more) about the mutual fund industry, all straight from the founder of the vanguard group himself. for those afraid of the size of this book, perhaps check out bogle's "little book of common sense investing" instead and then come back to this book if you want more details.

bogle's main message is that costs do matter and simplicity is the best way to avoid costs. the recommendation is to buy low cost broad-based index funds that will outperform the vast majority of actively managed mutual funds in the long run. notice by the definition of "average" that the average investor will get average market returns minus fees and taxes. notice the low cost broad-based index fund gets average market returns minus *minimized* fees and taxes. the index investor will thus outperform the average investor in actively managed mutual funds given all the extra costs associated with active management. also notice that the margin of victory from indexing will compound over the years and will lead to an even greater index fund performance in the long run. that's the gist of why indexing works. if you're not convinced, read bogle's book!

even if you've already read some of the other great passive investing books espousing the virtues of indexing, you still owe it to yourself to read at least one of bogle's books. "common sense on mutual funds" is both readable as well as comprehensive, and would be a good addition to your library. burton malkiel, rick ferri, william bernstein, larry swedroe and others have all written excellent books on the subject as well, but they also hold differing opinions on the specifics, so read all of these authors! i was already convinced on indexing after first reading malkiel's book, but continued reading more on passive investing to work out all the details. these books as a whole help reinforce the main ideas while also exposing the reader to the authors' differences in perspectives, thus building confidence in the reader to think and succeed as an independent d.i.y. investor.

of particular interest to me was the issue of small-cap value tilting. i was ambivalent on this practice, but bogle's book convinced me to *not* small-cap value tilt. readers who already know what small-cap value tilting is should feel free to skip to the next paragraph. now, for those unfamiliar with the terminology, stocks are divided according to size (small-cap, mid-cap, large-cap) as well as style (value, blend, growth). the size refers to the company's size as measured by its market capitalization, i.e. the number of shares multiplied by the price per share. the style is another way to partition stocks according to certain numbers such as price/book ratios and dividend yields; there's no agreed upon standard that's universally accepted for what constitutes a value/blend/growth stock. informally, you could think of value stocks as those that are not currently favored by the market for whatever reason. at the opposite extreme, growth stocks are "hot" stocks that scream potential. blend stocks are in between value and growth. given 3 sizes and 3 styles, there are thus 9 size-style combinations. according to research done by professors fama and french, small-cap value stocks significantly outperform the other 8 size-style combinations in the long run. the problem is, small-cap value stocks make up about 3% of the total stock market. small-cap value tilting means overloading on small-cap value stocks to try to capture the bonus identified in the fama/french research, but that also means underweighting 97% of the total market and potentially missing out if the other 8 size-style combinations outperform small-cap value. you see the dilemma.

bogle's repeated message of simplicity, as well as his emphasis on reversion to the mean, ultimately convinced me to resist the temptation of small-cap value tilting. bogle's unwavering conviction in the simple serves as a necessary component in the chorus of voices, helping to guide your investment decisions, even on the more esoteric matters. and although the message of simplicity is easily stated, i am glad bogle wrote a comprehensive text because the details illustrating the majesty of simplicity is what finally settled the small-cap value tilting question for me.

this book's huge size and scope definitely has its drawbacks, not the least of which is the sheer intimidation factor. nevertheless, i believe this book does serve a useful role in the catalog of passive investing, and bogle was the only one who could've written it.

Essential For Those Who Manage Their Own Funds
By M. Anderson
If you intend on managing your own investments (which I recommend over paying brokers who are essentially commission sales people), this is an essential tool. I bought my first copy about 10 years ago along with several other books. Basically this is the bible for investors who manage their own investments. I believe this is my third purchase of this book with two of them purchased as gifts for family and friends. We have made a lot of money managing our own investments and this book by John Bogle was a big help.

Amazon.com Review
In 24 Essential Lessons for Investment Success, the founder of Investor's Business Daily and author of How to Make Money in Stocks, William O'Neil, distills his 40 years of experience, study, and analysis of the market into a series of lessons about how to buy and sell stocks. O'Neil is neither a pure fundamentalist nor a technician--instead, he advocates blending both approaches, applying fundamental analysis to identifying the best companies and technical analysis to understanding the price actions of those stocks. The lessons cover everything from protecting your investment account (always cut your losses at 8 percent of the purchase price) and basic chart reading (identifying market tops and bottoms) to understanding relative price strength and tips on building a concentrated portfolio. While not absolutely necessary, it helps to have a copy of Investor's Business Daily handy: these lessons were drawn from a series that O'Neil wrote, which frequently mention features unique to that newspaper. 24 Essential Lessons for Investment Success is a easy-to-read, commonsense guide to stock picking that both novices and seasoned investors should find extremely useful. --Harry C. Edwards

Excellent Lessons
By Steve Burns
The author of this book increased his account 20 fold in 26 months and then bought a seat on the New York stock exchange. He studied the top performing stocks from 1953 to present to create his CAN-SLIM method, which has been proven in many independant studies to be one of the best. After his individual success as an investor he founded O' Neal & Co. and uses his companies stock data base to advise top investing firms. This is a credible author who all traders should listen to.

Here are some of the top lessons in this book:

#3 Follow a system rather than emotions.(This takes experience and time)

#6 Relative price strength: A key technical tool (Buy stocks in up-trends close to 52 week highs, these are the stocks with buyers)

#18 Don't try to be a Jack of all trades (Focus on one investment vehicle, be an expert)

#20 Sell Rules (Reset stops on stocks showing a profit so you do not give back all of your profit on a down trend)

Buy this book for 20 more essential lessons. This book will help beginners tremendously and also can be very beneficial for experienced traders and investors to revisit to keep on the right track.

This is a great little book that belongs in every investors/traders library.

Essential read for any IBD user
By Green eyes in the dark
In my opinion this book should be purchased at the same time with William O'Neil's How To Make Money in Stocks.

To make a long description short to the point, How To Make Money in Stocks is a very comprehensive book that requires a few repeated reading efforts in order for a novice investor to grasp the mechanism of the stock market.

It helps if one look at the HMMS book as a car and the 24 Essential Lessons as its Owner's Manual.

Book contains many high lights of HMMS in a shorter, more clear & concise fashion which also renders it easier to read.

Typos and known contradictions
By C. E. Creager
This is a solid biography of Detective Frederick Abberline, and contains some information that most Ripper scholars may not be aware of (on his later life, and the Cleveland Street Scandal in 1890). I appreciated more insight into the man who ran the ground operations in one of the most pivotal murder cases of the modern era.

However. There are several passages that contradict known facts - for example, Thurgood repeats the fable that a bunch of coins were left at the feet of Annie Chapman. He also repeats the myth that Mary Kelly was pregnant at the time she died, when the original post-mortem notes exist that say she was not. Slipshod research is problematic, in a book like this. And the worst fault - typos! The editor ought to be sacked. In a crime book, confusing the words "grizzly" (a bear) and "grisly" (gruesome, causing a feeling of horror) is just pathetic, and it takes the reader out of the narrative. Hopefully the second edition will have a more intelligent proofreader!

Washington Square, by Henry James

Washington Square is a short novel by Henry James. Originally published in 1880 as a serial in Cornhill Magazine and Harper's New Monthly Magazine, it is a structurally simple tragicomedy that recounts the conflict between a dull but sweet daughter and her brilliant, domineering father. The plot of the novel is based upon a true story told to James by his close friend, British actress Fanny Kemble. The book is often compared to Jane Austen's work for the clarity and grace of its prose and its intense focus on family relationships.

"Lorna Raver doesn't just read this book; she inhabits it." ---AudioFile

From the Inside Flap
"Washington Square is perhaps the only novel in which a man has successfully invaded the feminine field and produced work comparable to Jane Austen's," said Graham Greene.
Inspired by a story Henry James heard at a dinner party, Washington Square tells how the rakish but idle Morris Townsend tries to win the heart of heiress Catherine Sloper against the objections of her father. Precise and understated, the book endures as a matchless social study of New York in the mid-nineteenth century.
The Modern Library has played a significant role in American cultural life for the better part of a century. The series was founded in 1917 by the publishers Boni and Liveright and eight years later acquired by Bennett Cerf and Donald Klopfer. It provided the foundation for their next publishing venture, Random House. The Modern Library has been a staple of the American book trade, providing readers with afford-
able hardbound editions of impor-
tant works of literature and thought. For the Modern Library's seventy-
fifth anniversary, Random House redesigned the series, restoring
as its emblem the running torch-
bearer created by Lucian Bernhard in 1925 and refurbishing jackets, bindings, and type, as well as inau-
gurating a new program of selecting titles. The Modern Library continues to provide the world's best books, at the best prices.

Most Accesible James Novel About Daughter, Father, & Suitor
By T.NAKAJIMA
"Washington Square", published in 1880, is not, and will not be, regarded as Henry James's best novel -- the honor would go to "The Portrait of a Lady" or much later works like "The Wings of the Dove" -- but this short but richly woven book deserve our attention. The book is always readable and intriguing while it does not fail to deliver the amazingly realistic characters living in New York City of the 19th century. Certainly, this is the best place for any beginners of James to start.
The book starts with an introduction of a New York physician Dr. Sloper and his only daughter Catherine. While the doctor gained respectable position among the patients, he loses his wife suddenly after the birth of Catherine, who grows up to be a not particularly clever nor beautiful girl. Catherine, painfully shy, becomes a dutiful, but perhaps dull, daughter, the kind of a girl whose awkward behaviors her father approves always with a little detached attitude.
Then, comes a good-looking man Morris Townsend, who has no money but gives a word of "gentleman." But what does that mean when Doctor suspects this is just another fortune hunter, who is seeking for the money Catherine is to inherit after his death? Still, Doctor is half amused, even entertained, by this unexpected visitor who now seems to have gained the love of his daughter. But he didn't expect that Catherine would show surprising obstinate attitude in spite of his threat of disinheriting her.
The book is written, as a whole, with a very tragic note, but as you read on, you will find that, just like Jane Austen's narrator, "Washington Square" has an amusing aspect of comedy at first. The meddling widow Mrs. Penniman, whose wild imagination is one of her weakness, is a good example. She runs around between Morris and Catherine, only to annoy both of them. Henry James's touch when he treats these characters, however, sounds more incisive and even colder than Jane Austen's, if not totally cruel -- and the cruelty is gradually obvious as the plot unfolds.
Our main concern is about Catherine. The story is in itself trite and insignificant (James heard the original episode which the book is based on, in England from actress Fanny Kemble, and the brief note remains), but it is the growth (or change) of the apparently insipid heroine, and the interations between her and other characters (or between those other characters) that always impress us greatly. James's pen ruthlessly cuts into the hearts of those characters, and the intense, skillfully-constructed dialogue which show what is going on in the characters would instantly grip the readers' mind.
Some readers might champion more condensed prose of "The Golden Bowl", deeming "Washington Square" as too lightweight. In a sense, it is, I admit; the novel is not long, and the syntax is very easy to understand (for James, I mean). Still, the book is never dull, always fast-paced (for James, again), and the touching fate of the heroine Catherine is not a thing to be missed.
The novel is turned into films and they are also great, I must add. William Wyler's version is a masterpiece, with Olivia de Havilland/Montgomery Clift/Ralph Richardson trio, but more recent production made in 1997 is also good.

Bartleby the Spinster
By Arch Llewellyn
Washington Square is a searing portrait of selfishness, cruelty and manipulation that brings a radically new psychological depth to the traditional 19th century novel of manners. In Dr. Sloper James created one of his most insidious characters; a clever, genial man of the world who would rather sees his principles confirmed than his daughter happy. Catherine, the plain victim of a suave fortune-seeking fianc, has to rank with Melville's Bartleby as a model of passive resistance. As she awakens to her father's flaws, Catherine shows the plodding strength of innocence in the face of his high-handed manipulation. The self-absorbed spinster aunt Lavinia completes the picture, using her niece's courtship as a way to work out her own thwarted romantic desires. Everyone is using everyone for something else, in typical Jamesian fashion, but doing it with style--even in this early work, James had an uncanny feeling for the crude drives that veiled themselves behind good manners and the conventions of respectable society. A great read that has to rank as one of James's darkest and most insightful novels.

The Others
By Alysson Oliveira
Today's readers may not find Henry James's masterpiece "The Turn of the Screw" as creepy as it was when first published. To begin with, there is no gore in the book --the moments of horror are so subtle, but they get under one skin.
"The Turn of the Screw" was first published as a serialized novel in Collier's Weekly. After that it was published in the novel format, both in England and USA. When James wrote this novella was a period of increase of the popularity of spiritual issues. Many people were searching for new ways of explaining death, and they were also loosing their Christian faith. Many were trying to communicate with the Other Side.
But the dead in the novella, as James once stated, are not ghosts, as we know them. However, this belief persisted through time, and even today, most readers assume that Peter Quint and Miss Jessel are spectrums or a so-called entity.
On the form, "The Turn of the Screw" has some innovations. Prior to James, most novels were written through one point of view --this narrator told the story and the characters and actions are under his/her way of viewing, judgments, and conclusions. On the other hand, most of James's novels count with a difference: the narrator/character is not aware of everything. In this particular novella, we see the story through the eyes of governess and we know as little as she. Not only she, but also we, has a limited knowledge of the events.
Much can be concluded from the story --it is impossible to have a definitive conclusion. Some say the governess was a good character fighting against evil to protect the two children. But some scholars have researched and concluded that, as a matter of fact, the governess had a troubled mind. In 1934, Edmund Wilson wrote an essay that has become one of the most influential works on Henry James's ambiguity. Based on Freudian theory, Wilson argues that the governess's sexual repression leads her to neurotically imagine and interpret ghosts.
However, postmodernism have led critics to a different conclusion, which adds the two main chains of sturdy of "The Turn of the Screw". Not only are the ghosts in the novel, but the governess can also be mad. For these scholars, every incident can be interpreted as to prove that the governess is mad and to prove that there are ghosts. This irresolvable controversy makes James's work so brilliant and timeless.
Now it is up to each reader to find his/her own ghosts in this brilliant novella --so short and so deep and complex. Contemporary readers may be stunned and still scared with the smartness of the text. As the first narrator introduces the text, he says in the first line "the story had held us", "The Turn of the Screw" will hold every sophisticated reader in his/her seat.

Occasion it is simply a fun book "I'm Not A Racist, But...": The Moral Quandary Of Race, By Lawrence Blum, you could be happier as well as much more fun to delight in reading.

Not all racial incidents are racist incidents, Lawrence Blum says. "We need a more varied and nuanced moral vocabulary for talking about the arena of race. We should not be faced with a choice of 'racism' or nothing." Use of the word "racism" is pervasive: An article about the NAACP's criticism of television networks for casting too few "minority" actors in lead roles asks, "Is television a racist institution?" A white girl in Virginia says it is racist for her African-American teacher to wear African attire.

Blum argues that a growing tendency to castigate as "racism" everything that goes wrong in the racial domain reduces the term's power to evoke moral outrage. In "I'm Not a Racist, But . . .", Blum develops a historically grounded account of racism as the deeply morally-charged notion it has become. He addresses the question whether people of color can be racist, defines types of racism, and identifies debased and inappropriate usages of the term. Though racial insensitivity, racial anxiety, racial ignorance and racial injustice are, in his view, not "racism," they are racial ills that should elicit moral concern.

Blum argues that "race" itself, even when not serving distinct racial malfeasance, is a morally destructive idea, implying moral distance and unequal worth. History and genetic science reveal both the avoidability and the falsity of the idea of race. Blum argues that we can give up the idea of race, but must recognize that racial groups' historical and social experience has been shaped by having been treated as if they were races.

From Publishers Weekly
Media, politicians, social and political groups and individuals use the term "racism" casually and inaccurately, thereby stripping the concept of its meaning, argues Lawrence Blum in I'm Not a Racist, But...: The Moral Quandary of Race. Not all interracial difficulties involve racism, he contends, but society does not have the vocabulary to discuss racial overtones with greater subtlety. Thus people and institutions fearful of being called racist feel defensive when racial issues are raised, perpetuating the status quo of race relations. Blum (Moral Perception and Particularity), professor of philosophy and of liberal arts and education at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, asserts that only "certain especially serious moral failings and violations" merit the designation "racism." Discussing various scholarly perspectives on the construction of racial categories, Blum calls for a balance between "ridding ourselves of the myth of race" and understanding the role of race in social inequality and in history.

From Booklist
The term racism has been so overused that it is in danger of losing its moral significance, according to philosophy professor Blum, who argues for clearer, more precise use of the word and related terminology. Blum examines related concepts and terms --institutional racism, personal racism, racist, racist beliefs--and their interplay as he explores the moral implications of racism on a multiplicity of levels. A section on "colorblindness" is especially enlightening, given the often-contradictory use of the concept. The author surveys the history of the concept of race and its associated development with the enslavement of Africans. While he argues that "race," as we generally use that term, does not exist, racialized groups as socially constructed do, with import and consequences often associated with that term. Blum recognizes the ideal of abandoning use of the concept of race, but also acknowledges the practical need to remedy wrongs of the past and present. This is a very thoughtful work on a sensitive subject, a good and practical work for all readers interested in race relations. Vernon Ford

"Discussing various scholarly perspectives on the construction of racial categories, Blum calls for a balance between 'ridding ourselves of the myth of race' and understanding the role of race in social inequality and in history."―Publishers Weekly

"This is a very thoughtful work on a sensitive subject, a good and practical work for all readers interested in race relations."―Booklist

"In his informative treatment of the concept of racism, Lawrence Blum is most concerned with the dangers of over-appropriation. He fears that the accusation 'racist' is now used so casually and widely that it is in danger of loosing its power to shame. . . . His is a book that can help untangle many of the individual issues that racism raises and is a most important contribution to the growing field of applied educational and social philosophy."―Teachers College Record

"Few topics are in such desperate need of clear analysis as the subject of race. . . . In this concise volume, Blum brings the precision of a moral philosopher to bear on this perennial American dilemma, with generally helpful results. . . . A fresh and important contribution to applied social philosophy, recommended for general readers, upper-division undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty."―Choice

"Blum's thoughts support his main argument: that calm, reasoned deliberation about injustices can give us the moral vocabulary we need to do better as a society."―Boston Review

"This is a useful reference for anyone who wishes to think intelligently about the problem of race."―MultiCultural Review

"This book combines clarity and compassion to an extraordinary degree, while surveying in an accessible way a vast range of thinking about race. It will be enormously useful to teachers, at both high school and college levels; it will advance the debate among those who think about race; but above all, its wide diffusion will benefit all of us as citizens of a racialized society."―Kwame Anthony Appiah, Carswell Professor of Afro-American Studies and of Philosophy, Harvard University

"In 'I'm Not A Racist, But . . .' Lawrence Blum offers answers for our time about what race is, who is a racist, and ways for people to talk about the racialized features of our society without falling into name-calling or defensiveness. With exemplary moral and analytic clarity, Blum offers educators, students, lawyers, judges, leaders, and citizens tools for building a nation of equality, comity, and respect for each person."―Martha Minow, Harvard University Law School

"Following the findings of modern science, Blum holds that (biological) races do not exist, but racialized populations do, as a consequence of the Western world's subordinating and inferiorizing other peoples as well as some of their own populations. He insightfully examines and interprets contemporary attitudes, behaviors, and beliefs about race in the United States and argues that 'race' is fundamentally a moral problem. In confronting this problem, Blum challenges us to recognize and distinguish the varied manifestations of this racialized world view, from extreme racism to racial insensitivity and ignorance, which carry different moral valences. An excellent, thought-provoking book, with powerful messages, that should be widely read."―Audrey Smedley, Virginia Commonwealth University

"This much-needed book challenges the idea that justice in a historically racist society can be achieved through a policy of race neutrality alone. Lawrence Blum shows the many ways in which racism involves more than just individual attitudes and discusses the concepts of race and racism in a philosophically insightful way. 'I'm Not a Racist, But . . .' is a most important contribution to the growing field of applied social philosophy."―Walter Feinberg, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign

"With an impressive combination of moral acuteness, precision of reasoning, and wide-ranging empirical knowledge, Lawrence Blum, a fine philosopher, dissects our concepts of race and racism. He argues that 'racism' has all too frequently been a catch-all label for people and conduct of many different types, and that we will gain as a society if we make many more careful distinctions; between actions and traits of character, between the acts of dominant groups and reactive actions of subordinated groups, and above all, between racism, a morally grave failing involving inferioriaztion or animosity, and other moral failings, such as racial insensitivity, race-related ignorance, and deficient appreciation of individuality. Written in a lively, clear, and accessible style, Blum's book makes a major contribution toward a style of politics that rejects mere epithets and slogans in favor of thoughtful deliberation about shared problems."―Martha Nussbaum, Ernst Freud Professor of Law and Ethics, The University of Chicago

A Really Important Book
By A Customer
This book just has so much that's useful in it I forget that it's written by a philosopher; and yet everything the author says is said very carefully and is so well-reasoned. What is racism? What is race? Can blacks be racist too? These are some of the questions addressed. I really love the examples the author uses where he asks the reader to consider whether the response is "racist" or not and his references to current movies; and I don't think I've ever read a better "brief history" of race and racism. That chapter in particular is a must-read for those of us who teach sociology, psychology, or history courses in race or prejudice. His approach is so much more nuanced than most in his understanding of the social construction of race alongside his understanding that we can not forget that shared historical and social experiences mean something central to people. This book is destined to become a source that scholars and educators alike will turn to and recommend to others. Not a flash in the pan treatment of a trendy topic -- but a really important book!

Simply Superb
By David Schraub
A clear, engaging, and sophisticated analysis of America's most confounding problem. Blum outlines a progressive and compelling structure of how race works in America, how race talk is stifled, and how we overuse the term "racism." The most important thing his book adds to the discussion is not just that "racism" is an overloaded term. It's the call for a "more complex vocabulary" to deal with race. That is, in the status quo, one is either "racist" (evil) or not racist (good). This makes the definition of "racist" a scorched-earth battle, because the winner takes all. Blum argues convincingly that we should consider acts of racial insensitivity or subconscious racial prejudices to be really bad things, and work proactively to eliminate them, but should not necessarily tag them with the label of "racist". The simultanously concedes and turns the conservative objection that progressive race scholars are always "playing the race card" because it shifts the frame of debate--we need to discuss race issues, so we'll change the rhetoric we use, but we're not going to excuse bad conduct on your part just because it doesn't rise to the moral evil of slavery or Jim Crow.

An ounce of Clarity is Worth a Pound of confusion
By Herbert L Calhoun
This is a mature, if not a rather sophisticated treatment of a painful subject in a society whose reality and consciousness still rests comfortably on a "soft Apartheid-like racist" social order. Very gently, Professor Blum, a renowned philosopher, guides and clarifies as he enlightens. In the process of stripping away some of the emotion-laden baggage associated with the word "racism," he shows that even in a race-based society there is considerable room for clarity and nuance.

This is a very useful contribution, especially in the way he makes us aware of how our hypersensitivity to the way the word "racism" is used, itself continues to play an important but unconscious role in helping to maintain and protect social advantages and at the same time continues to help stifle a smooth transition to full equality between the races. This is a powerful message all by itself and is alone worth five stars.

My only complaint about the book is that there IS such a thing as "nuance overkill," -- of achieving just a bit too much subtlety. After all, the conservative ideologue, Denesh d' Sousa, in his book "The End of Racism," speaks of his own shades and nuances of the word racism. He uses the euphemisms "strategic," "defensive," and "situational" racism, with equal facility and with equal claims to a need for clarity. According to him, these are also clarifications that fit the reality of many whites - people who just coincidently also happen to be those Americans anxious to avoid having the "albatross of racism" hung around their necks.

I do believe that the word "racism" can be sliced-and-diced, peeled back, and parsed and finessed so much that it is bleached of all its affective content - and is thus rendered into an emotionless abstraction. Now tell me, honestly, whose interests does this bleaching process really serve? Do we really want to do that in a race sensitive culture?

Are we pretending not to know that on the backside of all the emotion packed into the use of the word "racism" is also built a "moral hammer." The job of that hammer is to not allow whites to remain too snug in their comfort zone of continuing to impose "the ways of racism" on the rest of us. In a real sense, it is the only moral hammer that remains in American society. It is the only thing between us becoming a neo-racist and Fascist society, and one that continues to move "ever-so-imperceptively" towards the equality the U.S. Constitution was intended to achieve.

But more than this, at some point one must sit back and "call a spade a spade." And here the double entendre is not intended to refer only to blacks, but also to whites, who continue to be sensitive to the word "racism" primarily because of the guilt it induces about their passive roles in maintaining a race-based culture.

No whites should be allowed to forget or allowed to miss the point that the word "racism" recalls how much the very idea of whiteness, (upon which most Americans identities -- and indeed the very essence of their humanity rest), continues to ride on the crest of a mostly false history that has allowed them to accumulate and store enormous "racist" advantages.

Thus the word, "racism," no matter how it is parsed, no matter how nuanced, no matter how much subtlety is added to the soup of our national discourse, will always retain a sensitive spot in the white psyche. The word "racism" cannot be further "purged" or "defanged." There is a natural end point to this process of parsing the word racism. Beyond that, the circle of re-empowering racists begins all over again.

As Albert Einstein is reputed to have once said, "we should make things as simple as possible, but not simpler than necessary." The same applies to the word "racism." Sometimes, an ounce of clarity is worth a pound of confusion. At other times, too much clarity can falsify reality in unintended ways.

Still the best book on the subject in print. Five Stars
