The perpetuation of racial stereotypes in many early cartoons is examined, as are the studios' efforts to stop producing such animation. This is followed by a look at many of the uncensored cartoons, such as Lenny Bruce's Thank You Mask Man and Ralph Bakshi's Fritz the Cat. The censorship of television cartoons is next covered, from the changes made in theatrical releases shown on television to the different standards that apply to small screen animation. The final chapter discusses the many animators who were blacklisted from the industry in the 1950s for alleged sympathies to the Communist Party.

Animation - not just cartoons

Animation has always been a reflection of popular culture, sometimes on the cutting edge, sometimes just a mainstream reaction. Yet because of the popular idea that animation is "kids stuff," it is sometimes not taken seriously. Cohen tries to shine a light on how animation goes way beyond "kids stuff" and reflects on the social forces that went into the creation of animated shorts and features. Despite being seen as a niche, animation has been subjected to a lot of self imposed rules of what can and cannot be shown, and to a lot of outside forces by both organized efforts such as the Hayes Office and less organized efforts such as popular protests against films like Coonskin or Fritz the Cat.
You do not have to know a lot about animation to enjoy this book. It helps, but most of us have been exposed to a number of the examples cited over the course of growing up. And what is politically incorrect is a moving target, so what was acceptable in one era is wholly out now. We see it even today with the television censorship of violence in classic cartoons.
It's also important to note that despite being seen as a less serious medium that could often get away with more than film, animators were still subject to the same winds of politics as illustrated by the final chapter on blacklisting. Animators were asked to name names to the HUAC, and many did not work in Hollywood again for defying the committee. Until I read this book I had no idea of the breadth of this blacklisting upon animators and it reinforces the shame of this era of our history.
Rather than passing judgment, Cohen uses mostly illustrations to show his point, letting the reader decide how much was/is too much. And he brings this battle of content into the late 20th century with examples of battles over The Simpsons, and Ren and Stimpy. Overall a very fascinating look into an area that is usually glossed over or ignored.

This book is a thorough look into the history of animation.

I enjoyed "Forbidden Animation". I am a huge fan of animation history, and I am happy that books about the political censoring of animation in the past and present are finally being produced. Karl Cohen should be commended for his thorough research of the subject, he definetly tried his hardest to bring an objectional perspective to the recorded documents involving the censoring of cartoons and animators. The books only real downfall is its lack of images-I'm not someone who has to have pictures, but when art and animation is the subject, you understand it more when you have something to look at-. I highly recommend this book to any animation historians out there, as well as people who want a better understanding of cartoons and their makers.

Disappointing

While the subject matter is fascinating, the book itself is in serious need of tighter editing. In fact, I got so frustrated with the author's disjointed writing style (it jumps all over the place) that I could only make it through half of the book. Every time I go back to the book to attempt to finish it, I'm quickly reminded why I couldn't finish it in the first place.

I really want to like this book, but its lack of a coherent structure prevents me from recommending it. I have found that other books from this particular publisher (McFarland) would benefit from more aggressive editing.

The Road Less Traveled

My first question on seeing this book was, is it going to be as successful and thought-provoking as Carr's previous book The Shallows? The answer is an unequivocal, "yes!"

If you've not read The Shallows I recommend that you consider reading it first because many of the thoughts and ideas from it are continued, developed and extended in The Glass Cage. It's not a necessary prerequisite but it would enhance your appreciation of Carr's arguments.

Carr's central thesis can be summed up in a quote often attributed to Marshall McLuhan, "we shape our tools, and thereafter our tools shape us."

Carr's point, which he develops with many intriguing examples ranging from airline pilots, through doctors, photographers, architects, and even to farmers, is that this Faustian pact with technology comes at a cost. The cost, in Carr's view, is a loss of direct, experiential, formative contact with our work. The consequences of this slow loss of familiarity and connection with our work are subtle, insidious and will only increase while we follow this technocentric approach to automation.

Carr is excellent at making his case. Most of his examples are familiar and those that less so, such as the automation of legal and medical opinions are interesting in that they affect us all.

I felt that where Carr was less strong was in proposing solutions to the problems he raises. He works hard at explaining an alternative vision calling on the poetry of Robert Frost's as a springboard to a more humanistic approach to developing tools, but it is hard work selling an alternative to the easy, convenient future that so many of us seem to crave.

Ultimately it may be that Carr's biggest contribution will not be to single-handedly derail the future that Google, Apple, and Amazon wish to sell us, an exceedingly unlikely outcome, but to at least make us aware that there is a choice that we are making when we choose the frictionless path to the future, and that we should carefully consider that choice before we make it.

This is an important read.

This is an important read. What happened in the airlines - the excessive automation killing the Pilots' skills, what is happening in Doctors' offices - (the device getting more attention of the Doctor than the patient) are worth knowing about. The latest Gartner report suggests disappearance of 6% of jobs by 2020 - just 4 years down the line. Yet, the politicians are busy promising millions of jobs if they are elected! The great divisiveness that is driving the public discourse, really serious loss of good paying jobs to Americans (irrespective of color) that has created desperation, and the relentless march of technology. Smart Meters take away meter reading jobs, no one needs to come to your doors to read your meter, or turn off the power (read - loss of jobs), Newspapers stop printing (read - loss of jobs), driverless vehicles hitting the roads (who needs MVA, who needs insurance, who needs highway police ---- read loss of jobs), and disappearing social safety net, increasing disparity. Time for a rapid reaction to avoid a broad social turmoil.

Well researched and historically rooted

I was familiar with Nicholas Carr having read his book "The Shallows", a commentary on the effects on the Internet on the actual functioning and physical structure of the human brain. I found that book to be excellent - this one is, I feel, even better. Carr is remarkably thorough in the research he conducts, as attested to by the lengthy notes and references at the end of each book. His ability to write remarkably meaty yet easy to read pages is but a bonus in his analysis of the effects of automation on we humans faced with interacting with modern computerized/robotic technology, particularly in the workplace. He clearly feels there is considerable dehumanization possible, but does so in a style of oscillation back and forth between lionizing and demonizing technological advances. He gives the reader's brain the encouragement to see the whole picture, to think broadly and with a humanistic focus throughout. His weaving in of the opinions of numerous writers and poets displays this in the impressive manner of a Renaissance man. This should be required reading particularly by those enamored of technological advances as ends unto themselves.

This book is phenomenal! Since I am indeed a dummy when it comes to hardcore IT, I was very excited to get my hands on this book. It never failed my expectations! SharePoint for Dummies of Ken Withee provided a one of a kind learning experience.
The part which I really found useful was SharePoint Designer, Report Builder, Visual Studio, and Dashboard Designer. It provided an easy to understand yet effective training on how the solution works.
I also learned a lot from tips on building dashboards, scorecards, and KPIs. As an IT enthusiast who is very adamant to try new computing solutions, Ken Withee's work gave me exactly what I was looking for, a book that gave me straight, concise, practical and applicable answers to my IT related queries.
This book is definitely a steal and I would recommend it to my friends and colleagues who are also looking forward in utilizing SharePoint for their organization.

SharePoint makes my business' operations smart and cost efficient

With the need to move to the cloud, being knowledgeable with SharePoint is a huge advantage for a businessman like me. With the use of SharePoint 2010 Development for Dummies by Ken Withee, I was introduced to the cloud and how to use SharePoint to my advantage. My favorite part is when they tackled ten ways to reduce operational cost, together with smart and cost efficient solutions for business. Since I am still familiarizing myself with the cloud, this book gave me a simple yet concise explanation on how it works, specifically on business solutions and simple implementation. It also gave me an idea on how to utilize SharePoint features and tools and how to use it to make operations smooth and efficient. Since transitioning to the cloud is a tedious and daunting task, this book which was actually tagged for dummies made it simple and bearable. It opened doors to better opportunities and business growth. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to boost their business success and operations efficiency and take it to the next level, the cloud.

Great book with colorful illustrations.

I love these books! We teach classical art and artist in my after school program so I decided to get this book for my students. I have used this book in the past and just didn't know where it was so I repurchased it. I love the bright illustrations and the beautiful writing in the book. The author does a great job explaining who the artist is and what they stand for. I like that these books allow my students to experience the artist in a new way. The pictures are stunning and the kids love seeing his paintings in the illustrations. The art is simple to mimic with young children. They love making tash marks. I have actually recreated the bridge and plant with students and they turn out beautiful! This is one of my favorite artist and have visited the DIA with my students to see a real Monet!

Interesting stories for kids!

I love this series of books and you can't go wrong with any of them. They are beautifully written and illustrated, and the stories are based on the real lives of famous artists and the young people in their lives who inspired them, which kids really like. The books also encourage young readers to be creative and explore possibilities in art, and the stories end with a project the child can do at home, based on the artistic style discussed in the book. Each book could really be an art lesson in itself, with art history, an interesting story, artistic techniques and a specific exercise included in each one. My daughter is in first grade but I imagine she will get more out of these books in the years to come.

A great way to introduce children to great artists.

I gave this as a gift to a 9 year old girl who loves art. We had a great time reading the book together. She especially loved the colors in the book as did I. The colorful fold-out of Monet's water garden is very nice.

Best GED Prep Book Around!

I got this book for my nephew who opted to take this test versus finishing his senior year of high school. He asked for my help with the math, but having been out of school for several years and not knowing specifically what type of math is on this test, I hoped to find a book with some specifics. I reviewed every section of this book and I was impressed with how well it organized the information and provided examples. I was grateful to receive this book for free in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
To start, this book has an excellent introduction. It explains what the GED test is, how the test is administered, what all the sections/topics are, how many questions are in each section and how much time is allotted for each section. They also explain how the test is scored. The Sections are as follows: Math, Reasoning through Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies. The last section of this book includes Practice tests for each section and answer keys; an added plus.
Each section is broken down into sub-sections sand those sections are broken down even further. Each sub-section includes plenty of examples to understand the subject matter. I highly recommend this book for anyone tackling this test. I don’t think there is another book around that could present this information in a better format.

Worth it

I wasn't sure about this study guide because it was really cheap. However, this book was really helpful. It covers all the core subjects and is really clearly laid out. Also has lots of practice. I'm taking the GED next month and I believe I will pass it thanks to this book.

I call test taking FUN and entertaining haha

I will admit that I am not actually planning on taking this test myself, rather I picked this up as a form of self education and entertainment for the many road trips and long distance drives my family takes. Yeah, I call test taking FUN and entertaining haha :) that said, about the study guide...

It has a nice and easy layout with all of the core subjects covered that you would expect to find on the official GED test. Language arts, math, science and social studies. This is a fantastic overview of what to expect as well as a nice refresher if you're like me and looking to pass some time without a screen!

I tried to provide as many photos of the details as I could because honestly when I look at reviews I first go to the photos to see the real life image of the item as I have found sometimes the stock photos can misrepresent what you're buying.
