About the Author
Robert Wandberg currently serves as the Language Diverse Literacy Coach for the Columbia Heights School District in Minnesota. His responsibilities include providing classroom teachers with effective, best practice strategies for working with English language learners, special education students, and low-literacy learners. He is a former middle and high school classroom teacher and state curriculum specialist with the Minnesota Department of Education. In addition to his numerous state, national, and international presentations, Dr. Wandberg has authored 12 middle/high school level textbooks for low-literacy students. He has also co-authored two university-level textbooks focusing on effective classroom practice and several professional journal articles, many of which focus on diverse students in the general education classroom. He also teaches graduate education courses at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

In an industry that is completely premised on the idea of service, and in which service is a key differentiator, it's a no-brainer to institute butler service. About the Author
Steven Ferry, born and raised in England, has published more than twenty books since he began his writing career. Prior to that he worked as a butler, and before that, as a teacher. He now lives in Florida and New Mexico with his wife, where he continues to write, teach and consult.

A very practical guide

Mr. Ferry has produced a handbook for training Hotel Butlers that can be used in a wide variety of hospitality venues from large properties with numerous suites served by butlers to smaller boutique resorts and spas offering butler service in very intimate settings.

The objective of this manual in all of these situations is to train and promote great service and inspire butlers with attitude, skills and focus to wow guests as though they were being served in their own homes.

First there is the discussion of butlers in a historical context and their evolution from servants to professionals over the years. The hotel butler is in a different role than the single family butler because multiple guests replace single employer as the central focus of service. The purpose of the butler remains the same " to smooth the lives of those who he or she serves" Understanding this role is key, and Mr. Ferry then moves on to the skills that enable the butlers to execute their mission with efficiency.

Skills involved include how to handle many of the more common situations that arise in terms of etiquette and navigating the "sticky wickets" or complicated situations that often arise. Then there is excellent discussion of some of the systems that are used for butlers to communicate effectively- the white board, the passport, the radio systems and protocols. Packing and unpacking, shoe care, laundry, setting the table and serving the proper English tea are but some of the many details of the butler trade that are covered in expert fashion.

The book ends up with a wide range of check lists that are wonderful templates ready to be customized to the particular hospitality location. Guest Room readiness checklist, list for organizing a dinner party and a guest record form are just a few of the great organizing tools that Mr. Ferry has provided.

Descriptions of hip, mid-century New York, London and Amsterdam, for example, help illuminate the role of cannabis in more recent cultural movements. And a quick survey of the myths about the drug’s psychological effects shows how laws banning cannabis were often used as an excuse to suppress blacks and migrant Mexican workers. Booth also discusses provocative legal, political and economic actions (for and against cannabis) that have affected millions of people. In his profile of a plant that can be an intoxicant, fiber, cooking ingredient, medicine and potential source of environmentally friendly products, he gives readers a fascinating sourcebook about "the most widely produced, trafficked and used illicit drug on earth." Though the noble plant's precise origins are hazy, the name cannabis probably evolved from antecedents meaning fragrant cane. Whatever it has been called, it has been beloved and reviled by personages ranging from twelfth-century Sufi monks, who chewed it for its mood-altering properties, to anti-pot Depression-era federal agent Harry Anslinger and today's drug warriors. Favored by poets (Coleridge sought to wean himself from opium with it), musicians and actors (Gene Krupa and Robert Mitchum, both busted in Anslinger's "star-bust campaign"), and worse (black-magician Aleister Crowley, who put it in his recreational-substance armamentarium). Besides famous users, Booth discusses home-growing ganja and present-day international trafficking in it, though from a British perspective. His pithy coverage of Rastafarians is a particular treat. Quick to read, good pointers

This was a worthwhile and short read, primarily meant for workplace hassles. Lilley pulls out the best points from other authors, especially Bramson's Coping with Difficult People. I liked the brevity of this book, compared to Dealing with People You Can't Stand: How to Bring Out the Best in People at Their Worst - that book was helpful for its breakdown of intentions (get it right, get it done, get along with others, get appreciated), and what happens when these are frustrated. I liked reading The Complete Idiot's Guide to Coping with Difficult People which had a more psychological focus and had good insights. Bramson's book Coping with Difficult People: The Proven-Effective Battle Plan That Has Helped Millions Deal with the Troublemakers in Their Lives at Home and at Work seemed to me the best in the category.

John R. Stepp teaches in the Anthropology Department at the University of Georgia and is a research associate in the university's Laboratories of Ethnobiology. Stepp is also founding editor of the "Journal of Ecological Anthropology." Felice Wyndham is working on her Ph.D. in anthropology at the University of Georgia. Rebecca K. Zarger conducts ethnobiological research in Belize and is currently coeditor of the "Journal of Ecological Anthropology."
