About the Author

Hayder A. Rasheed is a professor and Thomas and Connie Paulson outstanding civil engineering faculty member at Kansas State University, Manhattan, USA. Previously, he was an assistant professor at Bradley University, Peoria, Illinois, USA. He holds a BS and MS from the University of Baghdad, Iraq, and a Ph.D from the University of Texas at Austin, USA. He is an ASCE fellow, registered professional engineer, author and co-author of 3 books and more than 50 refereed journal publications, and editorial board member of the International Journal of Structural Stability and Dynamics and the Open Journal of Composite Materials.

I got the book this spring in order to better understand FRP design and construction in existing building renovation

I am a structural engineer working in the New York City. I got the book this spring in order to better understand FRP design and construction in existing building renovation. This book is well-written, easy to follow and there are a lot of analysis and design examples in this book. This book is not only the state-of-the-art FRP academic researches, but also a good reference book for practitioners for practical FRP-based building renovation design.

I purchased this book for a course involving the external strengthening of reinforced concrete. The textbook does a great job of explaining the state of the practice, and explains the theory behind the strengthening of reinforced concrete with FRP well. Numerous analysis and design procedures and examples make it an excellent resource for practicing engineers.

I am thrilled I only paid a couple of dollars for this. I was hoping for tricks and apps I hadn't heard of to help teach reading. But the best apps mentioned include safari, the clock app and the camera app!?! Thanks for nothing. I am dyslexic, and I am a speech pathologist specializing in reading. The descriptions of the reading process, reading teaching and how to help are SO basic, even a parent with no experience teaching reading will roll her eyes. And, the information about IEPs, and the intervention process in school is WRONG. The RTI process is described like it is a service or program, when in reality, RTI is the process by which the school intervenes too help children who are struggling. It is NOT a 30 min pull out instruction time. And I would love to meet this person who was reading 600 word per minute in sixth grade. I really hope this book doesn't reach many people who truly want accurate information about dyslexia and how to work to improve reading ability. The most important parts of teaching reading and spelling are only mentioned by way of naming the most popular trademarked programs available. The size and type of fonts preferable were discussed more than enhancing reading and spelling ability through instruction (with or without technology). What a waste.

Important, well written, timely book

This book will be welcomed by everyone who has dyslexia, and by prents and professionals who work with people with dyslexia. It is also a great book for anybody who wants a solid introduction to techniques and technologies that can improve study habits and lead to greater academic achievement.

Dr. Nuttall knows what he's talking about. He is, himself, dyslexic, a condition, he says, that was at first misdiagnosed, since he is also legally blind. This book reminds me of those other books written by scholars who have been afflicted with the disorders they write about: Dr. Kay Redfield Jamison, a Yale psychologist with bipolar disorder, Dr. Temple Grandin, a Colorado State University professor with autism, and Carlton Davis, the internationally known architect, with bipolar disorder. In each case, as in the Nuttalls' book, we learn from persons who have been there, who have conquered or are conquering their afflictions, and are generously telling the rest of us how they do it.

At one point while reading this book I thought, "Wow, I wish I had read this 50 years ago when I was a post-doctoral fellow, learning to treat 'slow learning' children at the Montreal Children's Hospital Learning Centre." I now feel certain, and I believe my mentor, the late distinguished Dr. Sam Rabinovitch, would agree with me, that many of the children we saw then would today be diagnosed with dyslexia. They were children of normal or above average intelligence, without other psychological disorders except for lousy self-esteem, a byproduct, I believe, of not being able to read. Of course, this book could never have been written then. It details with wonderful precision, the modern technological advances that can improve the lives of children who have difficulty reading, writing, and studying; it outlines the neurophysiological basis of dyslexia (thanks to MRI research, also a modern medical innovation); and it provides a compendium of the laws that are in place to help children so afflicted. Moreover the long descriptive list of apps for the iPad and other mobile devices that are useful in helping children (and adults) to learn is itself worth the very modest price of the book.

I highly recommend this book. Despite the evidence of careful scholarship, it's written in an interesting, easy flowing, and jargon free style. You'll get to learn about the various assistive technologies that can help us lead more productive, satisfying lives and perhaps be able to help yourself or someone you know to do just that. I loved it.

Not a complete collection of temperament theories and findings

Temperament research and models have 3 main approaches:
1 - experimental, when individual differences are traced using experiments on the properties of nervous systems
2 - observations of parents and guardians (developmental psychology approach) - prone to subjective errors
3 - factor-analytic models using lexical descriptors (prone to social bias of language and negativity bias of emotionality - these biases create an illusion that Extraversion and Neuroticism are main dimensions of temperament/personality)
The majority of contributions in this book describes theories from the two last approaches (i.e. less reliable) and almost completely misses the 100-year old tradition of experiments in Eastern Europe, except a brief communication on Strelau's theory. It is a very biased book and misleading for newcomers.

Joseph J. Corn is senior lecturer in the department of history at Stanford University. He is the author of The Winged Gospel: America's Romance with Aviation, 1900-1950. Brian Horrigan is a curator with the Minnesota Historical Society in St. Paul. Originally published in 1984 to accompany an exhibition by the same name organized and circulated by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service.

Fun but not enough

I agree with the reviewer below. It's one of the few books on this subject (I've only seen one other) so we have to live with it. On the other hand it's small, it's a bit scattered in its approach, and it feels like a museum gift-shop item/show catalogue of sorts. I would like to see someday a huge, profusely illustrated, and text-rich book on the complete history of portraying the future (positively) which is an historically recent phenomenon. It died probably around the time of the '64 World's Fair and depictions of the future since then have been largely dystopian. Nowadays they're downright awful. This is something we need to address because unless you can conjure up imagery of an upbeat future you're not likely to even try to create one. This book made me miss the days when people thought more positively and hopefully about many things, regardless of how bad it was at the time. Imagine the images in the mind of the average contemporary young person of the "World of 2050."

Intriguing, thought-provoking and fun.

"Yesterday's Tomorrows" is a look at how both popular culture and leading scientists, from the 1800s to the 1970s viewed the future. Joseph Corn and Brian Horrigan, using a variety of source materials, present these visions, both optimistic and grim, in a manner that avoids derision or arrogance. After all, some of these came true, and, in some cases, we wish the others had come true. But, as Corn and Horrigan point out, that's the beauty of the future: anything is still possible. The best way to explore how others viewed the future is through pictures, and this book has plenty. Corn and Horrigan draw on pictures, sketches and illustrations from magazines, TV shows, movies and books. While many of these visions, such as Buck Rogers' ray gun or a helicopter in every garage, are now nostalgic, many others, such as Buckminister Fuller's houses, still invoke wonder and awe. Corn and Horrigan provide a balanced approach to their theme by drawing from both popular culture and the scientific community's conception of what our life would be like. The book runs the gamut from future visions of cities, housing, transportation and warfare. Some ideas such as lasers have become commonplace while others like the flying tanks are prototypes that were passed over in favor of more practical options. But as the authors point out, who are we to judge these ideas from the vantage point of our time? Corn and Horrigan are careful not to poke fun at these concepts, but instead present them and explain their significance to the context of the times which produced them. Both fun and thought-provoking, this book is an excellent glimpse into not only the future, but into our dreams that make our tomorrows. Highly recommended.

The future isn't what it used to be....

Even though this book was produced to accompany a 1984 Smithsonian exhibition, it truly holds up as a worthy work in its own right. I can't recall seeing the subject of past speculation on the future handled better. It is done in a manner that is both scholarly and interesting. You get a balance of both the popular fictional conception of the future, as well as, more "official" versions from government and corporate think tanks.
The real strength of the book is it's vast number of both color and black and white illustrations. You have everything from ink engravings from 19th century illustrated newspapers and penny dreadfuls, to the glorious 4 color covers of 1930's pulp magazines, to film stills of the "modern era" (Star Wars, Blade Runner, and Road Warrior.)
I found the ideas in the insightful text most interesting. It is pointed out that the popular image of the past changes and evolves through time. The Victorians and Edwardians seem to assumed that the future would be much like their heirarchical and elite present, just with bigger buildings and more complex machines. The first half of the 20th century was driven largely by an utopian, often socialist, vision of a better future for all. However, the vision that seems to dominate the later half of the century is a grim, corporate, cyberpunk nightmare.
As Arthur C. Clark points out in the text, the future isn't what it used to be.

About the Author
This third edition of The Disneyland Encyclopedia is Chris Strodder’s tenth book. Among his other works are The Disneyland Book of Lists (2015), the children’s book A Sky for Henry, an adventure story for young adults called Lockerboy, the comic novel The Wish Book, the Stories Light and Dark collection of short fiction, a pop culture compendium entitled The Encyclopedia of Sixties Cool, and Swingin’ Chicks of the ’60s, a popular nonfiction volume of profiles that garnered international attention, as well as coverage in dozens of magazines ranging from the National Enquirer to Playboy, and exposure on national TV and radio shows.

Chris’s writing has also appeared in Los Angeles magazine, The Hollywood Reporter, The Huffington Post, USA Today, California magazine, Movieline magazine, and others. The Disneyland Encyclopedia was named a “Best Reference Book” by Library Journal. An avid Disneyland visitor and collector since 1966, Strodder lives by the beautiful Pacific Ocean in Pismo Beach, California.

Is love blind?

Love is Blind by TJ Chester is an urban fiction book about a prostitute named Rae who is very heartbroken over the death of her mother. All she has in the world are her two bestfriends Punch and Telly who work the streets with her. We follow her on an adventure to find out what exactly happened to her mother with a surprise at the end.

This book was a decent read. The storyline had a lot of potential but seemed stagnant at times with a lot of back and forth details. I feel like the author was a tad repetitive in the way that she delivered a point. I also felt the author may have gone off topic a few times in an effort to provide background information. And while background information is needed sometimes, it was distracting from the book to read along with the storyline and then have to stop and go back to background information because the next chapter took you back to some seemingly insignificant scene in the past.

As for the characters, some of them seemed unnecessary... such as Mrs. Pritchett. Though she tried to get Rae into church, she didnt seem that important a character. I generally skipped over their parts. I felt that Rae and especially Telly were engaging characters. I wondered about Telly a lot and would have loved to know more about him. I would have also liked to know more about Ozell. I mean his motives seemed sketchy and the explanation we got in the end was a little lackluster. The love story with Kenney and Rae could have been focused on a bit more as well.

All in all, I think the book was entertaining, though a bit predictable. That being said it was actually a good story. I would be very interested in reading more of TJ Chester's books.

A great book for adults only

I took this book with me on a long weekend and it truly kept me glued to each page wanting to read what was going to happen next in the lives of the 3 crazy friends. The book took my mind on a mental journey of anger, saddness, laughter, confusion and then a sigh of relief and joy for the character at the end. And while reading the book on my flight I was saying What! Are you Serious! until I realized people were looking at me because I was talking out loud. lol This book is for adults only in my opinion because of the language and sexual situatiins in the stories throughout. But if you handle that you will really love this book. You will start out angry about the begining but end up happy and understanding the end. Great job Ms Chester. I look forward to your next project.

Love is Blind is one of the best urban fiction books I've read this year. It is filled with so much drama. I loved it! Love is Blind's characters are remarkably unique, funny, and without a doubt engaging. The entire novel is action pact from beginning to end. This book is definitely a must read! T.J. Chester's art of writing is a blast.
