About the Author
Thomas R. Gilbert has a BS in chemistry from Clarkson and a PhD in analytical chemistry from MIT. After 10 years with the Research Department of the New England Aquarium in Boston, he joined the faculty of Northeastern University, where he is currently associate professor of chemistry and chemical biology. His research interests are in chemical and science education. He teaches general chemistry and science education courses and conducts professional development workshops for K–12 teachers. He has won Northeastern’s Excellence in Teaching Award and Outstanding Teacher of First-Year Engineering Students Award. He is a fellow of the American Chemical Society and in 2012 was elected to the ACS Board of Directors.

Rein V. Kirss received both a BS in chemistry and a BA in history as well as an MA in chemistry from SUNY Buffalo. He received his PhD in inorganic chemistry from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where the seeds for this textbook were undoubtedly planted. After two years of postdoctoral study at the University of Rochester, he spent a year at Advanced Technology Materials, Inc., before returning to academics at Northeastern University in 1989. He is an associate professor of chemistry with an active research interest in organometallic chemistry.

Stacey Lowery Bretz is a University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. She earned her BA in chemistry from Cornell University, MS from the Pennsylvania State University, and a PhD in chemistry education research (CER) from Cornell University. Stacey then spent one year at the University of California, Berkeley as a post-doc in the Department of Chemistry. Her research expertise includes the development of assessments to characterize chemistry misconceptions and measure learning in the chemistry laboratory. Of particular interest is method development with regard to the use of multiple representations (particulate, symbolic, and macroscopic) to generate cognitive dissonance, including protocols for establishing the reliability and validity of these measures. She has been honored with both of Miami University's highest teaching awards: the E. Phillips Knox Award for Undergraduate Teaching in 2009 and the Distinguished Teaching Award for Excellence in Graduate Instruction and Mentoring in 2013. In 2015, she was honored as Chemist of the Year by the ACS Concinnati Local Section.

Natalie Foster is emeritus professor of chemistry at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. She received a BS in chemistry from Muhlenberg College and MS, DA, and PhD degrees from Lehigh University. Her research interests included studying poly(vinyl alcohol) gels by NMR as part of a larger interest in porphyrins and phthalocyanines as candidate contrast enhancement agents for MRI. She taught both semesters of the introductory chemistry class to engineering, biology, and other nonchemistry majors and a spectral analysis course at the graduate level. She is the recipient of the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation Award for distinguished teaching.

Can do better!

This is a poorly written book and it only captures and short span Brian Lara's exploits on the field. It's tone is more of a narrative/commentary of events by Brian himself. My guess is that the author wanted to cash in on the successes of Brian up to that point and this was the end product. The unauthorized autobiography is light years better than this and it's well written, very well researched and covers Brian Lara's life from a child up past his retirement from international cricket.

A gift for Dad

The reason I only gave this product 4 stars, is because it wasn't for me. I bought this as a gift for my Dad. It wasn't easy to find, but thanks to the vendor. I was able to get this copy (used, but in excellent condition). My Dad claims it's the definitive biography of Brian Lara. Sadly, we can't find this book locally and we are from Trinidad! What is it they say 'A man is never appreciated in his own home'.

There is literally so much to remember for the Arithmetic section of the GMAT. This Manhattan Review guide is very helpful because it breaks down all the various arithmetic concepts, like percents, factors, and ratios, into specific sections so that you can focus on what you need to review the most. There are many practice problems, from simple to challenging, to test your skills after reading through each section. In my opinion, this is the best and most comprehensive guide for arithmetic on the market.

About the Author
R. Jon McGee is a professor of Anthropology at Southwest Texas State University. He began his work with the Lacandon Maya of Mexico in 1980, and received his Ph.D. from Rice University in 1983. McGee is married, has a son and daughter, and has taught at Southwest Texas State since 1985. He is the author of numerous works on the Lacandon including Life, Ritual and Religion Among the Lacandon Maya, and Watching Lacandon Maya Lives. He is also the coauthor of the texts Anthropological Theory: An Introductory History and Many Worlds: Essays in Religious Practices, Beliefs, and Culture. Richard L. Warms is professor of anthropology at Southwest Texas State University. He has done original fieldwork in West Africa, has published numerous scholarly articles and is co-author, with Jon McGee, of Anthropological Theory: An Introductory History and with Serena Nanda of Cultural Anthropology, 7th edition.

extremely useful text

I used this text for an upper division undergraduate course in social theory. In general, I found the selection of articles to be wise and helpful; I didn't use all of them but used more than I would from any other compilation. The book doesn't adequately cover the recent period, but no text could, and the teacher should choose her own supplements to the core texts found herein. Unlike the first reviewer, my students and I found the extensive footnotes to be the book's most valuable resource. They kept the students' attention, contextualized obscure references, and clearly explained more challenging passages. I did not find that these footnotes interfered with the role of the teacher; instead, they freed the class to spend more time in fruitful interrogation of the authors' ideas and less time buried in minutae. I highly recommend this book for teachers of upperdivision theory courses, and for graduate students looking for an unfair advantage on their rivals as they take their core courses.

Good collection of readings

This book contains works by most of the classic anthropological theorists. And very importantly, it contains footnotes, which are very helpful. However, it contains few current readings. Also, this edition of the book removes some of the better, more current selections from the older edition. If you are looking for a solid anthropological reader, then you can't go wrong with this text, BUT...try and get the earlier edition if you can.

Decent beginning, but still flawed.

I used this text for an anthropological theories course in undergraduate work. It's a pretty decent collection of work from major figures in anthropology.

Spencer, Tylor, and Morgan, Levi-Strauss, Marx, Boas, etc, etc. There is also a lot of work done to try and tie a common thread through as much material as possible. Contextualization of how a theory came to be, and what it might imply are pretty well done. Chances are, you're buying this book for a class, rather than pleasure, and though this can be kind of dry, it's fairly well done. Some selections are puzzling in terms of what they illustrate for that author, but by and large it shouldn't kill you to read this book.

There are footnotes, too. These seem like a blessing to begin with, especially if you don't have much of a foothold in the material, there is a lot that you are caught up on quickly, and it can be very helpful. On the flipside, the editors can be very heavy-handed in guiding the reading, and can be sometimes inane in their commentary. This is the major failing of the book, it's more to read, and the later in the book you get, the less useful it is.
