The primary purpose of this book is to answer the questions, "What kind of person kidnapped, tortured, sexually assaulted, and murdered JonBenet Ramsey? Did John or Patsy Ramsey torture, sexually assault, and murder JonBenet?" The secondary purpose is to educate criminal justice practitioners, psychologists, criminal justice students, psychology students, and the public about psychopathy and sadism in an effort to prevent more people from becoming victims. JonBenet Ramsey was only six years old when she was taken from her bed and murdered on December 25, 1996. Not only did John and Patsy Ramsey lose their daughter during a horrific murder, but they were falsely accused of the murder by members of the Boulder Police Department and the news media. JonBenet's murder remains unsolved 15 years after her death and the killer has never been brought to justice. Andrew "Lou" Smit was stricken with cancer and passed away on August 11, 2010, after this book was 90% written. Lou was a highly respected criminal investigator with the Colorado Springs and El Paso County Sheriff's Department, who had investigated 200 homicides with a 90% clearance rate. Lou played a major role during the investigation of JonBenet's death and he became the leading authority of the intruder theory. Lou shares his insight and experience in this book. Robert Whitson, Ph.D., was a law enforcement officer for 30 years and retired from the Boulder Police Department in 2005. He spent six years obtaining his doctorate degree after he retired and, because of JonBenet's murder, studied psychopathy for his dissertation. He has taught criminal justice at the college level for eight years and he shares his knowledge about psychopathy and sadism in this book. Psychopaths comprise about one-percent of the American population, but they comprise a dispproportionate rate of about 25% of the prison population. Psychopaths may be responsible for as much as 50% of violent crimes and 90% of serial killers are psychopaths. Psychopaths tend to demonstrate abnormal sexual behaviors, including sadistic characteristics. Not every psychopath will become a criminal who commits serial rapes or serial murders, but the vast majority of people who commit the most heinous and violent crimes in our society are psychopaths. After reading this book, Lou Smit and Robert Whitson believe you will agree a sadistic pscyopath murdered JonBenet Ramsey - not her parents.

Need more info on Ramsey case per se
By Amazon Customer
Though it appears that Dr. Whitson is quite knowledgeable of his subject and while Lou Smit was rated a top notch detective, this book is more of a lecture in psycopathy than a police case.I suppose I wanted to read a more indepth report of the Ramsey case. I found it a little difficult relating some of the psycopathy cases to JonBenet's.

Reader Injustice
By Rikki-tikki-Tavi
This book attempted to use various definitions and characteristics of psychopaths and extensive sketches of various serial killers and somehow tie the details into the murder of JonBenet Ramsey. To say it was unfocused would be putting it mildly.
Throughout the book the author keeps asking the reader to think about what kind of person committed this murder whether the details or comments he's presented has any kind of remote relevance to the crime or not. Frankly, all I could think about was how an individual with a PhD could write such a rambling unfocused hodgepodge and how any editor could allow it to see the light of day in the publishing world.
There's other problems with the book too numerous to enumerate including using the testimony of FBI profiler John Douglas who eliminated the Ramseys as likely suspects. The author failed to mention that the Ramseys recruited and hired him and that they had approached another FBI profiler, Gregg McCrary, earlier who had refused their offer because he felt the crime scene consistent with "a staged domestic homicide."
I have to comment on the ransom note as it was rendered in this book. Words that were misspelled in the original note like "posession" were presented as being spelled correctly as "possession". Words spelled correctly in the original note- like "situation" were presented as being misspelled as: "situaton".
Absolutely unbelievable!
I don't believe there was any deliberate attempt to deceive or mislead as to the contents of the note because I don't think these mistakes- from what I can tell- have any real bearing on this case one way or the other. Nonetheless, the misprinting of the note reflects the sloppy and careless way the facts and evidence were compiled and presented in this book and it does deprive others the opportunity to peruse the note in its original form and decide for themselves the relevance of its details.
And the idea the notepad the ransom note was written on wouldn't have been turned over if Patsy Ramsey had written it on it is hogwash. Criminals do dumb things all the time, especially when they're nervous and under a lot of pressure to possibly deceive the authorities. Or perhaps it was calculated to be turned over- so people like Whitson would take the Ramseys part, asserting they wouldn't be that stupid if they were guilty. Whether you believe the Ramseys were innocent or guilty of the murder of their child, this is a tedious mess to have to wade through. Frankly, it's a fiasco and is unconvincing and does the Ramseys no favors.

Psychopaths, Tunnel Vision, and Groupthink
By Thomas Mininger
It is terrible to think about the murder of a six year old, let alone the way that she was murdered. But to understand this case we have to analyze the sex torture slaying that took place and what kind of personality does such a thing.
This book describes the behavior that sadistic psychopaths exhibit which normal people find hard if not impossible to comprehend. They enter homes for the stimulation. They kidnap and rape while other family members are in the house. They torture for the enjoyment of having Godlike control over another human being.
A chilling chapter gives many examples ranging from Elizabeth Smart being kidnapped by a psychopath, while her sister was in the same room, to the sadistic psychopath BTK murdering an entire family, and everything in between.
Former Boulder detective Whitson and renowned murder investigator Lou Smit also expose the tunnel vision and groupthink in the Boulder ranks that ignored the coroners' findings and crippled the investigation. Sex offenders, serial criminals, and strangers loitering in the neighborhood were not investigated properly. DNA on foreign objects has not been retested with advanced techniques. Investigators not towing the line with Mark Beckner and Steve Thomas' implausible Patsy Ramsey theory were intimidated and removed from the case.
During the late nineties the FBI caused the media harassment of the Ramseys, Richard Jewell (Atlanta Olympics bombing), and then Dr. Steven J. Hatfill (anthrax) after 911. This unethical behavior was a substitute for credible cases which they could not build.
It's exasperating that Ken Lanning, the FBI's leading expert on crimes against children, was shut out of the investigation when he pointed out that his colleagues' presentation did not fit with the Ramsey's as suspects and they were not allowing for the possibility of an intruder.
I personally don't trust Ed Gelb's exculpating polygraph tests any more than I would have trusted BPD and FBI polygraph tests which would have been conducted with extreme bias.
Chapter 4 is loaded with statistics for the forensic psychology student and can be skipped without losing flow. The rest of the book is layman friendly and worth buying for the final chapter alone which provides an excellent summary of:
The physical evidence
The behavior of the killer
The behavior of the Ramseys
The behavior of the Boulder authorities
This case desperately needs new leaders with no vested interest in protecting their past conclusions. Mark Beckner doesn't cut it.
