Suspect: Karl Alberg #1, by L. R. Wright

To Karl Alberg a small town on Canada’s “Sunshine Coast” looks like the perfect place to soothe a psyche that’s been battered by too much big-city police work. Bees buzz among the roses, and the local librarian is attractive, intriguing, and unattached. Perhaps he has at last come in from the cold. But sunny towns can conceal a lot of secrets—some of them bleak enough to make a man yearn for some nice straightforward urban crime.
In 1986 L.R. Wright’s The Suspect beat out titles by Ruth Rendell and Jonathan Kellerman to become the first Canadian novel to win an Edgar award. It went on to become a great cult favorite among mystery fans, who prized its delicately etched sense of melancholy and intriguing character studies of the cop, his quarry, and the enigmatic librarian who proves an unlikely bridge between the two.

"Every bit as good as the novels of P.D. James and Ruth Rendell" -- People

From the Publisher
Edgar Winner Best Mystery of 1985

From the Inside Flap
In this, L.R. Wright's first mystery novel, we are introduced to RCMP Staff Sergeant Karl Alberg; and so begins the highly-acclaimed series featuring Karl and librarian Cassandra Mitchell.

At eighty, George Wilcox hardly expected to crown his life by committing a murder. It had happened so quickly, so easily, so unexpectedly in the sleepy town on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia:a near-perfect crime that wraps Wilcox in a web of guilt, honor, and secrets of the past.An unprovoked act that soon binds him to the warmhearted town librarian, Cassandra Mitchell, and her new romantic interest, zealous Staff Sergeant Alberg.Together, this troubled trio find themselves caught up in a crime whose solution transcends the logic of pure justice.

Untraditional murder mystery
By Amazon Customer
I came across the third book in this mystery series at a used book sale but wanted to read all of them in order in case they turned out to be good. I'm glad I did. This book is not so much a murder mystery as it is a character study of individuals touched by murder: the perpetrator, his friend, and the cop intent on solving the crime. All are involved in an uneasy relationship and Wright does a wonderful job of conveying the emotions and thoughts of all of them as they lead themselves to the inevitable discovery of why the murder happened.
I've started the second book and it is equally as absorbing. Wright is a wonderful storyteller.

Superb!
By John D. Costanzo
This is a wonderful, near perfect crime novel: a beautifully crafted story about murder, and evil that is perhaps worse than murder. The characters are all memorable. You will not find a more sympathetic murderer in all of literature. The author expertly leads you to a conclusion that is both satisfying and disturbing. Top notch, this ranks among my favorite mystery novels. A must read.

A Great Start
By algerina
A friend just recently introduced me to RCMP Staff Sergeant Karl Alberg and the lovely librarian Cassandra Mitchell. I love mysteries so I was disappointed when in the first chapter I learned the identity of the murderer. But the characters are so well crafted that I was hooked. The setting on the sunshine coast of Canada is unique. The plot is not so much of a 'who done it' but rather a 'why'. The motive is doled out a crumb at a time. This first book in the series has me hunting for the others.

Preface

The tourism industry is both dynamic and diverse. Most students come to the study of tourism full of enthusiasm and questions. Yet, the textbooks available have been dry and/or overly focused on travel agencies and transportation modes. Often they are full of facts with little theoretical or macro-issue discussion. As a result, students' enthusiasm soon wanes and their interest in careers in "tourism" diminishes. We decided to write a book that would be as interesting and multifaceted as the field itself.

Like the first edition, the second edition of Tourism: The Business of Travel features a conversational style, making it fun to read,-yet providing a thorough overview of the tourism industry, giving balanced coverage to each component part. The role of the travel agent and the importance of transportation modes are included, but not to the omission of significant coverage of other industry issues, such as accommodations, destinations, attractions, and food and beverage operations.

As our title suggests, we look at the tourism industry through the lens of business, specifically by considering the management, marketing, and finance issues most important to industry members. In addition, the book starts with a comprehensive model of tourism and unfolds by considering each piece of the model in succession. All students should find the book enjoyable and educational, no matter which facet of the industry they find most interesting.

ENHANCEMENTS IN THE SECOND EDITION

We have built on the success of the first edition of Tourism: The Business of Travel and created an even better learning tool in the second edition. We kept and expanded all the features that readers and reviewers said they liked and added topics about which they said they wanted to know more. The impacts of technology on the industry have been integrated throughout the text. Several important improvements are featured in this second edition and in the Instructor's Manual. The most significant modifications include:

  • Special attention to the Internet and its impact on the tourism industry,
  • Expanded discussion of the growth segments of tourism: singles, disabled, adventure and extreme travelers, and nonprofessional meeting attendees,
  • Enhanced discussion of the importance of tours, tour operators, and meeting planners,
  • Increased emphasis on human resources and personal selling,
  • Industry-specific readings added to each chapter,
  • Dozens of new and updated tables and figures to increase ease of comprehension,
  • Expanded end-of-chapter glossaries.
  • WHO SHOULD USE THIS BOOK

We designed this second edition of Tourism: The Business of Travel so that it can be tailored to suit a variety of needs. Its engaging writing style and its hundreds of updated industry examples make it the perfect textbook for freshman and sophomore students taking their first tourism class. The thoroughness of content also makes it suitable for a similar course introducing students to the hospitality industry. To meet the advanced critical-thinking needs of junior and senior students, we have augmented the text's basic content with end-of-chapter readings and comprehensive cases that they can use to apply their knowledge and refine their problem-solving skills.

No matter how experienced the instructor or students, we believe this second edition is one that professors can teach with, not simply from. The various text features and teaching supplements allow each instructor to develop the course to fit his or her style and the special needs and learning styles of students.

    HOW THE TEXT IS ORGANIZED

The second edition of Tourism: The Business of Travel introduces students to an integrative model of tourism as a dynamic industry and then unfolds, considering each of the model's components in turn. The first part focuses on the traveling public and tourism promoters, explaining the critical linking role that travel agents and tour wholesalers provide. Part 2 familiarizes students with each of the tourism service providers in turn, beginning with transportation and concluding with destinations and resorts. Part 3, The Service and Hospitality Environment, elevates students' attention to macro-issues facing the industry, including service quality and the important impacts that tourism can have on host communities and the world.

Each chapter of the book is followed by a supplementary reading(s). Three practical applications appendices are included to increase students' transferable skills. The text concludes with six integrative real-world cases that professors can use during the course as it unfolds or at the end of the course to bring all the pieces together.

    SPECIAL FEATURES

We incorporated many features into the second edition of Tourism: The Business of Travel to make it engaging for both the instructor and the students.

Feature: Each chapter opens with learning objectives and a detailed outline.
Feature: Each chapter features a real-world vignette that illustrates a major component of the chapter and then is mentioned again within the chapter pages.
Feature: All chapters include ethical/critical thinking dilemmas (termed "You Decide") that are useful in generating class discussion and encouraging students to practice critical-thinking skills. Each "You Decide" is written to be especially relevant to the chapter in which it appears.
Feature: Each chapter includes many tables and figures that help students understand the more abstract concepts and theories presented.
Feature: FYI (For Your Information) boxed items are sprinkled throughout the chapters. These items serve as examples of chapter concepts and provide helpful travel tips or useful business information.
Feature: Each chapter includes a Tourism in Action topic that provides students with an in-depth industry example of the chapter's content.
Feature: Discussion questions at the end of the chapter are based on the learning objectives.
Feature: The Applying the Concepts section of each chapter offers professors and students a variety of thought-provoking topics to explore or to use as a blueprint for applying newly acquired knowledge.
Feature: A glossary of terms follows each chapter's content, and the index highlights the page on which a term is defined.
Feature: The text is full of concepts and examples of organizations, many of which will be familiar to students to engage their interest; however, many are from outside North America.
Feature: The importance of service quality in the increasingly competitive industry is accentuated by giving it full chapter coverage.
Feature: Students are sensitized to the variety of impacts that tourism can have: economic, political, social, and environmental.
Feature: Three appendixes build student skills in problem-solving, good manners, and career/job-seeking.
Feature: Readings follow each chapter, offering the instructor supplemental material and examples for student discussion.
Feature: The text concludes with six integrative cases that have been classroom tested and can be used to give students practice in applying what they have learned and improving their problem-solving/critical-thinking skills.

    THE INSTRUCTOR'S TOOLKIT

To fulfill our goal of making this second edition of Tourism: The Business of Travel customizable for individual instructor needs, we have developed a comprehensive instructor's toolkit of resources. The instructor's manual includes the usual elements—detailed chapter outlines and a testbank—but also includes supplemental lecture material and discussion guides to support the use of the readings and cases provided in the text. In addition, discussion suggestions are offered throughout the chapter outlines to generate student debate on several of the textbook features, such as the You Decide chapter dilemmas.

The power of the written word in our text is also supported by a series of videos and a website that both students and professors will find educational and entertaining.

The Heidegger Change: On the Fantastic in Philosophy (SUNY Series in Contemporary French Thought (Paperback)), by Catherine Malabou

Elaborates the author’s conception of plasticity by proposing a new way of thinking through Heidegger’s writings on change.

Behind Martin Heidegger’s question of Being lies another one not yet sufficiently addressed in continental philosophy: change. Catherine Malabou, one of France’s most inventive contemporary philosophers, explores this topic in the writings of Heidegger through the themes of metamorphosis, migration, exchange, and modification, finding and articulating a radical theory of ontico-ontological transformability. The Heidegger Change sketches the implications of this theory for a wide range of issues of central concern to the humanities—capitalism, the gift, ethics, suffering, the biological, technology, imagination, and time. Not since the writings of Jacques Derrida and Emmanuel Levinas has the work of Heidegger been the subject of such inventive interpretation and original theory in its own right.

    The Change is US
    By Michael H. Shenkman
Malabou's writing is equal to her mission: to be a guide on the way to new thinking. What is even more amazing is that her guidance into this strange terrain can be followed, can be understood and can frame decisions -- just as she wanted to accomplish, without accomplishing, of course. That said, I sincerely hope that she is willing to want more from her readers, and is willing to stay with them (in future "formal" works) beyond being able to imagine Heidegger.
Not that this trajectory is insignificant. In the latest issue of the New York Review of Books (10/9/2014) there is a review of Heidegger's "Black Notebooks," in which all the passages that "prove" Heidegger's anti-Semitism and ritually repeat his Nazi involvement (which Malabou does not evade) are rehashed. And so thinking with Heidegger becomes a task indeed, and guides like Malabou (and I refer the reader to Reiner Schurmann's Heidegger: On Being and Acting (1990)) help keep us on track.
But there is more at stake here than the fond wish with which she ends the text. that we "imagine Heidegger." And in all the pages prior to that she does the work that is required if we are to step into a new thinking and embark on a new voyage of thought. This voyage, which I call "aspirational" is one that takes the steps (not beyond?) that bring us onward in a movement of generatively creative encompassment, expanding our ways with each step or leap, and do so, as Heidegger said, in "The Thing," that is "unswerving but erring."
Being a HegeIian at heart (I have also read her book "The Future of Hegel"), I could not help but feel the need for her to write that next book, the one that places the terms she unfolds (plasticity, metabolism, surpassing, revolution, etc.) into a disclosing exposition. I imagine a book in which she employs her deconstructive skills and then, as she seem uniquely able to do, she would reconstruct the text into disclosing new forms of engaging. As a review of this book however, this is just to say that I feel that with this volume we have just begun, and well, I am ready for more. And so, can I dare, am I being too presumptuous to ask for her more?
I am not an academically employed philosopher and so I am not really sure to whom I would recommend this book. I want it to be read and I want people to meet Malabou and hear her voice. This is not a book for novices, it is not an "introduction" to Heidegger. In this book she speaks in the voice of being a companion for those who are already in the throes of philosophical recalibration and who are already are seeking ways to transform their thinking into a mobile and affecting discourse, right in the act of reading.
My point is, while this book is faithful to the deconstructive mission of her teacher, Jacques Derrida, I feel that Malabou seems to be on the verge of doing more. I kept thinking of Luce Iriagary, and also Jean-Luc Nancy (whom she cites a couple of times). Irigaray crystalized phrases, cited metabolic moments, redrew the lines of relating into a new way. I await Malabou's new ways, articulated in her form. Jean-Luc Nancy jumps right into new modes of discourse, with all "his" heart.
In the meantime, if you, dear sojourner, are looking for a way to clear your time and your mind so that you can nurture and cultivate your aspiring ways, and so begin to cut out your own articulations of what can happen in those scenes of your living (Malabou quotes Heidegger: "Whoever is in Being at a given time is what is being risked." -. 289), bring her and this book, a gift, along with you.

    THE IMPOSSIBLE: HEIDEGGER EXPLAINED
    By barryb
THE IMPOSSIBLE: HEIDEGGER EXPLAINED: yes; it is true. I've read Malibou before and I already trusted her. This book surpasses what I read before. It actually appeared in French in 2004, so it has surfaced for 9 years now. We are just late receiving it in English translation.

Post- modern philosophy has had its structure revealed for years now: Hegel's psychology coupled with Heidegger's existential analytic. There has been plenty on Hegel's psychology. Now we have a definitive volume on Heidegger, as used by the post-moderns.

Malibou takes us to a "place"; the place of standing "in-difference" around that hole of the "void-point". She says "here; is where we start and unfold ourselves and "Being". Around this hole, we are engaged in an "orbit". While orbiting , we will "exchange" ideas, "transform" our ideas, and contribute to the unfolding of Greek "morpha-form" of a schema-of-Being" that wants to emerge. These three stages in German are: Wandel - Wandlung - Verwandlung. She wants us to live with them , while we orbit together with Heidegger's philosophy in hand.

I enjoyed the orbit; I learned a lot and was challenged to "make sense" quite a few times. I love academic books like this. She also gives the steps of the "first-cut, the steps of transition to "economic-exchange" and the steps of "excribing" what we have inscribed. A very systematic "step-by-step" approach which proved to me that she thoroughly knew the material, from many different perspectives.

I appreciate this book because it makes Heidegger "thinkable"; which very few have been able to accomplish. I appreciate Heidegger much more now, and can truly visualize how he has plugged-into quite a few post-modern thinkers.

This is grad-level material, but accessible to those who will pause and "sort" as they go along. As a thinker who can also "teach", I give a hearty 5 stars and do so unreservedly. Enjoy.

    The formatting is atrocious.

Hard line breaks are set beyond the Kindle's margin - the whole book looks like the last message on a long chain email, where every sentence wraps jaggedly in the middle. Fortunately I ordered a preview before buying a different version.

    Spoiler
    By Amazon Customer
I gave this two stars not because the book wasn't good but it was too short. I'm not talking about the 11 pages because that was fixed. The third book ended with Emma leaving because the stalker was trying to blackmail her, so of course that's where the fourth book picked up. Literally the only thing that happened in this book was Justin and Ryan kept the stalker from hacking into Emma's phone to keep him from finding her. Then they blocked him from putting out the video and they sent Chris to go get her and they all went into hiding. Long story short (even though the story is short) The stalker finds them, Moira kills him.... the end. The whole thing was predictable to be honest.

My last review is getting deleted so I can say a few things. 1st is if you pre-ordered this book you only got the 11 page version. 2nd call customer support and they will fix it. It took less than 5 minuets for them to put the real book on my kindle. 3rd is to the author mrs. Mayburn. I love love love this series and I cannot wait until next year!!! If you could make it sooner I would love you forever. 4th read these comments before you get upset or purchase the wrong book. And don't blame the author and give her bad reviews. To error is human and we all need to remeber that. Keep moving forward Ann!!!

"This is a book of husks and sparks, of things lost and then recovered..." So begins Rabbi Geoffrey Dennis in his introduction to this one-of-a-kind encyclopedia devoted to the esoteric in Judaism-the fabulous, the miraculous, and the mysterious. The Encyclopedia of Jewish Myth, Magic, and Mysticism presents "lore that can spiritually enrich the life of anyone, Jewish or not, who wishes to understand the mysteries that underlie our universe."

Jewish esotericism is the oldest and most influential continuous occult tradition in the West. This comprehensive treasury of Jewish teachings and lore drawn from sources spanning Jewish scripture, Talmud, the Midrash, the Kabbalah, and other esoteric branches of Judaism, is exhaustively researched yet easy to use. It includes over one thousand alphabetical entries, from Aaron to Zohar Chadesh, with extensive cross-references to related topics.

    From the Publisher
"An erudite and lively compendium of Jewish magical beliefs, practices, texts, and individuals. Geoffrey Dennis serves up a delicious schmorgesbord of the irrational, demonstrating that Judaism has been and is not only a rational and legalistic monotheism, but also a rich storehouse of magical traditions that Jews often fail to recognize. This superb comprehensive encyclopedia belongs in every serious library." --Richard M. Golden, Professor of History and Director of the Jewish Studies Program, University of North Texas, and editor of the Encyclopedia of Witchcraft: The Western Tradition

    A
Aaron: The brother of moses and miriam, Aaron was
both a prophet and the first High Priest. In Jewish tradition,
he exemplifies the virtues of duty and peacemaking.
Alongside Moses, he performed various miraculous
deeds and signs before Pharaoh and his court. Aaron transformed
his rod into a serpent, which consumed the serpents
created by Egyptian magicians (Ex. 7). The first three
of the ten plagues (blood, frogs, and lice) were initiated
by Aaron at God's command (Ex. 7-8).
In his role as High Priest of the new sacrificial cult of
God, Aaron enjoyed supernatural protection. He survived
a trial by ordeal when his authority was challenged by
korach and his kinsmen. His status as High Priest evidently
    immunized him from divine punishment (Ex. 34;
Num. 8) and he was instrumental in checking a plague
sent by God among the Israelites by performing a rite
with incense from the altar (Num. 17:1-15). According
to the Bible, Aaron died by the will of God before entering
    the Land of Israel.
Rabbinic literature describes miraculous events surrounding
the death of Aaron. God placed one mountain
on top of another to mark where Aaron would be buried,
which is why the Bible calls his burial place Hor ha-Har
(“Mount Mountain”). Aaron was laid to rest on a couch in
a luminous cave on Mount Hor by angels. He was then
enveloped by a Cloud of glory and he died by the kiss
of God (Yalkut, Chukkat 764; Lev. R. 10; Mid. Teh. 83.1).
In the mystical theosophy of the sefirot, Aaron symbolizes
the emanation of Hod, divine glory. He is also one
of the ushpizin, the spiritual ancestors invited to sit in
the sukkah with the living during the holiday of sukkot.
It is interesting to note that despite the many theurgicreligious
elements in the biblical accounts of him and the
magical attributes of his rod, unlike Moses, Aaron is not
widely portrayed as a magician in non-Jewish circles.
Aaron of Baghdad: A mysterious, possibly mythical figure,
whom early medieval mystics in Western Europe credited
with bringing Jewish esoteric traditions to them from the
east.1 A number of miraculous tales about him have been
preserved in books such as sefer Yuhasin.
    1. Scholem, Major Trends in Jewish Mysticism, 41, 84.
Abaddon: “Destruction.” One of the compartments of
gehenna (Masekhet Gehinnom). In the book of Job, it is
Death personified. The New Testament identifies Abaddon
as the “Angel of the Abyss” (Rev. 9:11).
Abba: “Father.” A Talmudic holy man who, although
not an ordained rabbi, has shown spiritual or healing
powers. The word is also applied in various ways to the
    mystical Godhead. see partzufim; sefirot.
Abbahu, Rabbi: Talmudic Sage (ca. 3rd-4th century).
He experienced clairvoyant dreams. An avid collector of
lore, both legal and legendary, he preserved a number of
stories of how angels intervened in the life of biblical figures
    (PdRE 16, 43).
Abbaye: A Talmudic Sage and folk healer. Abbaye once
tricked Rabbi Acha into exorcizing a demon from his
    house of study (Shab. 66b).
Abbreviations: The use of abbreviations appears in Hebrew
writings as early as the 2nd century BCE. Variously
called notarikon, siman, or rosh tevot, abbreviations have
been widely used for the functional purpose of saving
space at a time when writing materials were costly and
scarce. But even though the origins of the practice are obviously
utilitarian, this method of writing is, in fact, a kind
of encryption. As such, abbreviations can also be a form
of esoteric communication. Over time, certain kinds of
abbreviations, such as acronyms (words formed from the
first letter or syllable of other words) and acrostics (verses
arranged so that a particular letter from each line, taken in
order, spells out a word or phrase), came to be regarded as
dynamic sources of secret knowledge and power to Jewish
mystics and to magical practitioners of all persuasions.1
Thus the name for the month preceding the High Holy
Days, Elul, is seen as an acronym for Ani L'dodi V'dodi Li
(I am my beloved's and He is mine). In another example,
BeresHIt (Gen. 1:1, “In the beginning”) is understood
to be an acronym for Bara Rakia, Eretz, Shamayim, Yam
Tahom, “He created the firmament, land, heaven, sea, and
    abyss.”
In Kabbalah, abbreviations are sometimes called tzeruf
otiyot, or letter combinations. Perhaps the most famous of
these is related to the Talmudic story (Ber. 55a) of the four
sages who entered Pardes (Paradise). Tradition teaches
that pardes (“orchard”) is an acronym for the four methods
of torah interpretation: Pashat, Remez, D'rash, and Sod
(plain meaning, allegoric, homiletic, and esoteric). In other
words, the living may find entry to Paradise by penetrating
into the mysteries concealed within the Torah text.
Abbreviations are also an almost universal feature on
amulets. One talismanic acronym is the word shaddai
(shin-dalet-yud) that appears on a mezuzah. The word
itself is a biblical name of god, but also stands for Shomer
Delatot Yisrael (Guardian of the doorways of Israel). The
presence of this acronym-incantation helps give the mezuzah
its protective power. magic squares and diagrams
constructed from different kinds of abbreviations dot medieval
Jewish books on mystical knowledge, magic, and
    alchemy.
Names of worthy figures are sometimes held to be abbreviations
of esoteric teachings. Thus the name Jacob,
YAaKoV, is actually made up of four titles of God, Yotzrecha,
Osecha, Konecha, and Borecha (your Former, your
Maker, your Owner, your Creator), revealing God's special
relationship with Jacob, and through him, his descendants.
The most notable and widespread name abbreviation
custom to this day is the various methods adopted
for writing an abbreviation for the tetragrammaton so
that it may not be pronounced and to thereby prevent
the erasure or destruction of God's written name. also
see anagram; hafuch; israel; temurah; tzeruf.
    1. Singer, Jewish Encyclopedia, vol. 1, 39-43.
Abdiel: An angel mentioned in sefer raziel.
Abihu: The brother of Nadav. see nadav and avihu.
ABiYAh: This word is a mystical acronym for the four
worlds of emanation: Atzilut, Beriyah, Yetzirah, and
    Asiyah.
    Ablution: see immersion; mikvah; water.
Abner: The commander of Saul's army. The Philistines
were not the only ancients who employed giants. Abner
was so enormous that while he slept, David was able to
crawl beneath his crooked knees and so escape a trap Saul
had set for him (Eccl. R. 9:11; Yalkut Jer. 285; AbbS). He
was the son of the woman of endor (PdRE 33).
Abracadabra: The archetypal voce magica, magical word.
Many claim it to be of Jewish origin reading it as a kind
of fractured Aramaic, ab'ra k'dabra, meaning, “I will create
according to the word.” This is very plausible, assuming
the Aramaic syntax has undergone corruption. It is also
    plausible that it is of non-Jewish origin. see hebrew alphabet;
    incantations; magic.
Abraham: (Hebrew: Avraham). The progenitor of the Jewish
people, Abraham is also considered in rabbinic tradition
to be a natural philosopher, mystic, and a prophet second
only to Moses. He personifies loving-kindness, devotion,
    and faithfulness.
    Abbaye
In the Bible, Abraham not only responds to the direct
command of God to leave his homeland for Canaan, he
has several encounters with angels (Gen. 18, 22). In the
midrash, he is granted many miracles. To save him as an
infant from the wrath of evil King nimrod, he is secreted
away in a cave, where the angels feed and minister to him.
According to the text Ma'asei Avraham Avenu, God later
delivers him from a fiery martyrdom planned for him by
    Nimrod.
In several sources, he is celebrated as an astrologer (Book
of Jubilees; B.B. 16b). In one Midrash, he sees his infertility
is written in stars, but comes to learn that God has power
over even the astral influences. This then explains God's decision
to change his name from Abram to Abraham (Gen.
15), for in changing his name, God also changes his fate.
From this experience, Abraham gives up the practice of astrology
    (Zohar III: 216a; Aggadat Bereshit).
The reason God commands him to circumcise himself
(Gen. 17) is that this act of self-perfection will make the
    spirit of prophecy more accessible to him (PdRE 29;
    Tanh., Lech Lecha 20).
In the Zohar he is credited with the knowledge to
create a golem (I: 79a), a knowledge alluded to in the
biblical text (Gen. 12:5). This tradition springs from a single
reference to him in the final chapter of sefer Yetzirah.
Because of this same reference, some mystics also regard
Abraham to be the author of that work. Abraham
also possessed a miraculous healing stone, the tzohar. After
his death, God suspended it from the sun, enhancing
    the sun's healing powers (B.B. 16b).
In early Kabbalah, Abraham comes to be regarded as an
archetype, a personification of sefirotic attributes. In later
works this logic is reversed, with Abraham being treated as
a divine attribute whose dynamic function in the world is
expressed allegorically through the Abraham saga found in
the Torah. He represents the sefirah of Chesed, pure love.
    (Pes. 118a; Gen. R. 38, 61; Seder Eliyahu Rabbah, 1:13;
Zohar, Bahir). see patriarchs and matriarchs; righteous,
    the.
Abraham, Apocalypse of: A 2nd-century-CE document
that contains revelations of future history and a vision of
heaven, probably of Jewish origin but also now including
Christian glosses. It exists today only in Slavic language
    translation.
Abraham Azulai: Kabbalist (Moroccan, ca. 17th-18th
century). He wrote Avraham L'chesed and an influential
commentary on the Zohar. One source credits him with
performing wondrous deeds, but as there are at least three
prominent Abrahams in the Azulai family, this cannot be
    verified.
Abraham ben David of Posquieres: Mystic and polemicist
(Provencal, ca. 12th century). He experienced a
visitation of elijah (Commentary on Yad ha-Chazakah).
Abraham ben Moses: Kabbalist (Egyptian, ca. 13th century).
Rabbi Abraham, a mystic influenced by Sufism, is
most notable for being the son of maimonides.
Abraham ben Simeon: Magician, alchemist, and world
traveler (German, ca. 14th century). Abraham is the author
of Cabala Mystica, “The Mysterious Tradition” (or alternately,
Segullat Melakhim, or “The Book of Sacred Magic”).
Abraham not only told tales of how he enjoyed royal patronage
from many European princes, he even claimed to
have given two popes occult advice. Much of what we
know about Abraham is in doubt--the veracity of these
stories themselves, or even whether Abraham was actually
a Jew or a Christian of Jewish parentage.1
    1. Patai, The Jewish Alchemists, 271-89.
Abraham ibn Ezra: see ibn ezra, abraham.
Abraham, Testament of: The Testament is a 2nd-century-
CE apocalyptic text describing Abraham's ascent
into heaven. It appears to be a Jewish text heavily glossed
by Christian copyists. It survives only in Greek.
Abraxis: An angel mentioned in the Gnostic tradition
that appears in later Jewish amulets and in Medieval Jewish
    angelologies.
Abu Aharon: Healer and wunder-rabbi (Italian, ca. 10th
century), he performed exorcisms, broke the spells of
witches, and combated zombies (Sefer Yuhasin).
    Abu Aharon
    Abulafia, Abraham: (1240-1291?). Medieval Spanish
Kabbalist, self-proclaimed prophet, and failed messiah.
Abulafia practiced and taught a sophisticated and novel
form of ecstatic (or as he called, “prophetic”) Kabbalah
that, until recent times, has not received much general attention,
no doubt due to his controversial personality and
career. In his own lifetime, his claims and unorthodox
teachings earned him condemnation from rabbinical authorities.
Fortified by belief in his own messianic identity,
Abulafia at one point sought an audience before Pope
Nicholas III in order to convert him. Not surprisingly, he
was imprisoned for spreading his “gospel.” More surprising
is that he actually survived the ordeal, outliving the
Pope in question. His teachings are enjoying a revival on
two fronts: renewed scholarly research, and the revival of
his techniques within contemporary meditative circles.1

Abyss: (Tehom). The name for the primordial waters that
preceded Creation and are now trapped below the crust
of the earth (Gen. 1; Gen. R. 13:13; Ps. 104). In temple
times, the ritual of the water libations was performed
to draw up these tellurian waters to help to moisten and
    fructify the earth (Tan. 25b).
It can also refer to the realm of the dead, the place
where evil spirits and wicked souls dwell. In later Jewish
eschatology, it is one of the seven compartments of gehenna
    (Masekhet Gehinnom). see chaos; water.
Academy on High: see yeshiva shel malah.
Acha ben Jacob: Talmudic Sage (ca. 4th century). He
was a storyteller, folk healer, and exorcist. He once defeated
    a demon in the form of a seven-headed hydra (Kid. 29b;
    B.B. 75b).
Acherit ha-Yamim: “The End of Days.” see judgment,
    day of; eschatology; messiah.
    Acrostic: see abbreviations; notarikon; hafuch; temurah;
    tzeruf.
Adam: (Adam Rishon). Adam is the first human being and
an archetype for all humanity. One Kabbalistic teaching reveals
that the word ADaM is a mystical abbreviation for the
essence of human nature: Adamah (earth), Dibur

    Review

“I like this book for the above points. The authors have succeeded to stir thoughts about urbanization and to appreciate urban geography from an alternative perspective. This book would be particularly helpful to students and those involved in urbanization processes, including businesses.” (3D Visualization World Magazine, 24 June 2015)

    Review

An excellent textbook for urban geography courses: accessible, comprehensive and stimulating. For the student who wants to know how and why cities continue to matter, Andrew Jonas, Eugene McCann and Mary Thomas have produced a pedagogic tour-de-force.
    Kevin Ward, University of Manchester

An excellent and comprehensive introduction to cities’ uneven geographies and the diverse processes and experiences that co-produce them. Each of its empirically rich and theoretically rigorous chapters will engage, excite and extend students, while giving them a solid grounding.
Pauline McGuirk, Director, Centre for Urban and Regional Studies, University of Newcastle, Australia

    From the Back Cover

Urban Geography presents a comprehensive introduction to a wide range of critical themes and conceptual ideas relating to contemporary urban geography including patterns and processes of urbanization, urban development, urban planning, and life experiences in modern cities. Building upon a wide range of topical examples and illustrative case studies from several international cities, the text brings to light all of the key ideas, concepts, and themes most widely utilized in critical geographical approaches to contemporary urban spaces.

Initial chapters offer an introduction to critical approaches to the city before exploring the evolution of contemporary global processes of urbanization and urban development. These are followed by more in-depth coverage of such topics as labor, planning, place marketing, social reproduction, nature, experience, art, culture, citizenship, and alternative urban spaces. Individual chapters strike a careful balance between a depiction of the diversity of ordinary urban geographies and an exposure of the networks, flows, and relations which increasingly connect cities and urban spaces at the global level.

Urban Geography offers valuable insights into critical geographical approaches to the modern city, along with the diverse set of policies, practices, and challenges of contemporary urban living and its rapid movements and changes.

This book’s cover shows the Ashton Canal dissecting the formerly industrial area of Ancoats in Manchester, England. Urban landscapes like this one are palimpsests that speak to how cities change in tandem with social, economic, and architectural transformations over time. A heartland of 19th Century urban industrialism, Ancoats is now rebranded as ‘New Islington’ and, as the contemporary apartment buildings along the canal suggest, is undergoing gentrification. Cities are always changing. This book explains how, why, where, and in whose interests.

The organization of this textbook is great! It is very easy to read as far as textbooks go. One thing I really like in terms of facilitating a close reading of the information is that the beginning of each chapter gives you 5 or so key questions that will be answered throughout the chapter. If you can answer those questions by the end you have a good grasp on the material.

It is on the shorter end as far as textbooks go, and does not require extensive note taking to absorb the materials. It is written in a historical format.
