Elaborates the author’s conception of plasticity by proposing a new way of thinking through Heidegger’s writings on change.
Behind Martin Heidegger’s question of Being lies another one not yet sufficiently addressed in continental philosophy: change. Catherine Malabou, one of France’s most inventive contemporary philosophers, explores this topic in the writings of Heidegger through the themes of metamorphosis, migration, exchange, and modification, finding and articulating a radical theory of ontico-ontological transformability. The Heidegger Change sketches the implications of this theory for a wide range of issues of central concern to the humanities—capitalism, the gift, ethics, suffering, the biological, technology, imagination, and time. Not since the writings of Jacques Derrida and Emmanuel Levinas has the work of Heidegger been the subject of such inventive interpretation and original theory in its own right.

The Change is US
By Michael H. Shenkman
Malabou's writing is equal to her mission: to be a guide on the way to new thinking. What is even more amazing is that her guidance into this strange terrain can be followed, can be understood and can frame decisions -- just as she wanted to accomplish, without accomplishing, of course. That said, I sincerely hope that she is willing to want more from her readers, and is willing to stay with them (in future "formal" works) beyond being able to imagine Heidegger.
Not that this trajectory is insignificant. In the latest issue of the New York Review of Books (10/9/2014) there is a review of Heidegger's "Black Notebooks," in which all the passages that "prove" Heidegger's anti-Semitism and ritually repeat his Nazi involvement (which Malabou does not evade) are rehashed. And so thinking with Heidegger becomes a task indeed, and guides like Malabou (and I refer the reader to Reiner Schurmann's Heidegger: On Being and Acting (1990)) help keep us on track.
But there is more at stake here than the fond wish with which she ends the text. that we "imagine Heidegger." And in all the pages prior to that she does the work that is required if we are to step into a new thinking and embark on a new voyage of thought. This voyage, which I call "aspirational" is one that takes the steps (not beyond?) that bring us onward in a movement of generatively creative encompassment, expanding our ways with each step or leap, and do so, as Heidegger said, in "The Thing," that is "unswerving but erring."
Being a HegeIian at heart (I have also read her book "The Future of Hegel"), I could not help but feel the need for her to write that next book, the one that places the terms she unfolds (plasticity, metabolism, surpassing, revolution, etc.) into a disclosing exposition. I imagine a book in which she employs her deconstructive skills and then, as she seem uniquely able to do, she would reconstruct the text into disclosing new forms of engaging. As a review of this book however, this is just to say that I feel that with this volume we have just begun, and well, I am ready for more. And so, can I dare, am I being too presumptuous to ask for her more?
I am not an academically employed philosopher and so I am not really sure to whom I would recommend this book. I want it to be read and I want people to meet Malabou and hear her voice. This is not a book for novices, it is not an "introduction" to Heidegger. In this book she speaks in the voice of being a companion for those who are already in the throes of philosophical recalibration and who are already are seeking ways to transform their thinking into a mobile and affecting discourse, right in the act of reading.
My point is, while this book is faithful to the deconstructive mission of her teacher, Jacques Derrida, I feel that Malabou seems to be on the verge of doing more. I kept thinking of Luce Iriagary, and also Jean-Luc Nancy (whom she cites a couple of times). Irigaray crystalized phrases, cited metabolic moments, redrew the lines of relating into a new way. I await Malabou's new ways, articulated in her form. Jean-Luc Nancy jumps right into new modes of discourse, with all "his" heart.
In the meantime, if you, dear sojourner, are looking for a way to clear your time and your mind so that you can nurture and cultivate your aspiring ways, and so begin to cut out your own articulations of what can happen in those scenes of your living (Malabou quotes Heidegger: "Whoever is in Being at a given time is what is being risked." -. 289), bring her and this book, a gift, along with you.

THE IMPOSSIBLE: HEIDEGGER EXPLAINED
By barryb
THE IMPOSSIBLE: HEIDEGGER EXPLAINED: yes; it is true. I've read Malibou before and I already trusted her. This book surpasses what I read before. It actually appeared in French in 2004, so it has surfaced for 9 years now. We are just late receiving it in English translation.
Post- modern philosophy has had its structure revealed for years now: Hegel's psychology coupled with Heidegger's existential analytic. There has been plenty on Hegel's psychology. Now we have a definitive volume on Heidegger, as used by the post-moderns.
Malibou takes us to a "place"; the place of standing "in-difference" around that hole of the "void-point". She says "here; is where we start and unfold ourselves and "Being". Around this hole, we are engaged in an "orbit". While orbiting , we will "exchange" ideas, "transform" our ideas, and contribute to the unfolding of Greek "morpha-form" of a schema-of-Being" that wants to emerge. These three stages in German are: Wandel - Wandlung - Verwandlung. She wants us to live with them , while we orbit together with Heidegger's philosophy in hand.
I enjoyed the orbit; I learned a lot and was challenged to "make sense" quite a few times. I love academic books like this. She also gives the steps of the "first-cut, the steps of transition to "economic-exchange" and the steps of "excribing" what we have inscribed. A very systematic "step-by-step" approach which proved to me that she thoroughly knew the material, from many different perspectives.
I appreciate this book because it makes Heidegger "thinkable"; which very few have been able to accomplish. I appreciate Heidegger much more now, and can truly visualize how he has plugged-into quite a few post-modern thinkers.
This is grad-level material, but accessible to those who will pause and "sort" as they go along. As a thinker who can also "teach", I give a hearty 5 stars and do so unreservedly. Enjoy.
