Review
"Basic Music Theory is an ideal and highly recommended text for anyone of any background wanting to become proficient in the reading, composing, and performance of written and notated music."--Midwest Book Review(5 stars, highest rating)
"This is a book that covers lots of ground without ever appearing "difficult." It is written in a breezy, conversational manner, so one "talk" naturally drifts into the next."--KLIATT Library Review Service
"Basic Music Theory by Jonathan Harnum explains the subject in a manner that is light-hearted and easy to follow. For someone in their late forties (like me) who hasn't had formal music training since the age of thirteen, it's been extremely useful. I can now say that I'm able to read music and understand some of the more-complex musical arrangements. I've been playing the saxophone for about 18 months now and the book has helped to bring me from a level of not being able to read music up to one of reasonable competence at sight reading.--Chris Ward (Kendal, UK)
"Basic Music Theory by Jonathan Harnum, is an excellent book for people of all levels. Whether you are a beginner, or learned musician, this book is a very comprehensive source of material, that is both accessible, easy to read & understand, and very enjoyable. I have played various instruments over 24 years. And because of Harnum's matter of fact, conversational tone, this book has lent more to my understanding of basic music theory than all my private insturctors combined. Easy and completely understandable!"--Ruben Tamayo, Los Angeles, CA
Basic Music Theory encompasses more than just the basics for beginning piano or violin students. Anyone who hopes to play any instrument should find this a great starting place. Harnum draws on his experience of having taught thousands of students to produce a book that's just loaded with information, yet manages to convey that information with a light touch and a bit of humor that makes it understandable for teens and adults, and maybe even for middle school students. -Kathy Duffie, homeschool book reviews. From the Publisher
This book is a unique and worthy addition to the library of anyone interested in music.
From the Author
This book was first written over 10 years ago for my students because there were no books like this one at the time (friendly and easy, with concepts simply and clearly explained). I've used it with students from grade school through college, as well as older adults with no previous musical experience. This completely updated 4th edition was written after I completed a PhD in music education and realized that the book could be even better. It will help you learn to read music.

Good for beginners except that my print run contained errors - author corrected Kindle version and added errata sheet online
By Anna Flynn
For beginners, I think this can be a very helpful book. However, in the Kindle version and especially the hard copy versions I purchased, I found multiple errors that could confuse a beginner. I was surprised, considering this is the 4th edition of the book. I looked for an errata sheet on the publishers web site and couldn't find one, so I sent a message using the web site's "contact us" capability. I'm pleased to say that the author responded quickly, both in correcting the errors in the Kindle version and in adding an errata sheet to the web site. The corrections will also propagate to new printer runs of the book, but there will be no way to tell if what you buy has the corrections unless you compare the book to the errata sheet, so I recommend that all current owners and buyers of any new hard copy version check the errata sheet.

I think this would be great for the beginner
By Phillip Goodwin
Music theory can be a very dry subject. I had music back in high school and starting to play again, but my memory is a bit rusty. I didn't want a book that would bore me to death or take too long to find what I'm looking for.
This book does the trick. It is very approachable, it has a discussion with you. It offers tricks to help you remember which is which (example such as the whole or half rests (hole or hat....how it looks on a line). I wanted to have a book where I could find the answers quickly so I could get back to playing. Although I do have some music experinece, I think this would be great for the beginner. I think, for this case, this book would be better choice than the idiot and dummies books and I am a big fan of those books.

The 4th Edition of the best book that I have found on basic music theory
By Frederick P. Bartlett
This is the best book that I have found on basic music theory. The first edition was focused more on children, but now the author has earned his PhD in music education, it is a little more adult oriented. It has useful exercises to review each chapter, along with a good website with materials for download.
One omission from the first edition was a very funny page on the blues. Perhaps it was not politically correct enough for the new publisher ( self published). Interestingly, this book is custom printed on demand by Amazon, so it takes a few extra days. Excellent binding, but some captions have strange formatting.
