About the Author
John Trimbur is a specialist in composition and writing studies, with interests in cultural studies of literacy and the politics of language in the United States and South Africa. He holds a B.A. from Stanford University and an M.A. and Ph.D. from State University of New York, Buffalo. Trimbur is the director of the First Year Writing Program at Emerson College in Boston. He has published widely on writing theory and has won a number of awards, including the Richard Braddock Award for Outstanding Article (2003) for "English Only and U.S. College Composition," the James L. Kinneavy Award (2001) for "Agency and the Death of the Author: A Partial Defense of Modernism," and the College Composition and Communication Outstanding Book Award (1993) for _The Politics of Writing Instruction: Postsecondary_. He also was a visiting professor at the Centre for Higher Education Development and a resident fellow at the Centre for Rhetorical Studies, both at the University of Cape Town, South Africa.

Authors Herbert and Barbara Apelian Beall are residents of Mineral Point, active in the Mineral Point Historical Society, and have completed several projects and publications in the fields of historic research and preservation-including architectural driving and walking tours. Both are currently professors and writers, combining these experiences with their knowledge and dedication to historic preservation, in order to create a pictorial history of the town that identifies itself as the place "where Wisconsin began."

How to read and write chemistry (for the university student)

This book is meant to be a practical guide in reading and writing chemistry. There are numerous practical tidbits interspersed throughout the book. There are also exercises (many of which include "peer review" style discussion among classmates) and numerous examples (both positive and negative). The topics range from reading the primary literature through writing lab reports and even to giving oral seminars.
The authors do a good job straddling the line between keeping the text short (this is a "Short Guide" after all), while providing the essential kernals of information. Unfortunately, it reads a bit like a how-to guide for someone trying to get an "A" grade in their "Writing in Chemsitry" course. There is little discussion of format variations (except possibly in the "Writing a Research Proposal" section) probably not the author's fault, more of a page constraint issue. However, I would like to have seen less on, say "How to keep a freshman lab book" (17 pages!) and more on, "How to give an oral presentation." Surely the target audience should be the upper-year student, not the freshman.
If the biggest problem is the formulaic presentation, the best aspect is the numerous examples interspersed throughout the book. I was pleased to note that the examples, at least, are chosen to highlight the differences in scientific opinion that constantly arise and that younger scientists find baffling. Because science is generally taught as hard facts in high school, there is no indication that science is actually a refining process where theories are put to the test, elevated, or destroyed as work is done to test their validity. This process is amply demonstrated by the authors, in a wide variety of subdisciplines, all of which are fun to read, even for professors and other chemical professionals.
Therefore, I recommend this book for the senior undergraduate and graduate student who wants to refine/develop their scientific writing style. I'm skeptical about recommending the book to freshmen, in spite of the number of pages devoted to freshman topics, because I'm not as happy with those chapters.

In A Short Guide to Writing about Chemistry Herbert Beall and John Trimbur describe how to write in chemistry. Beall is an expert in writing books about chemistry and Trimbur wrote books about reading and writing. With these two authors combined for one book, there was no doubt that this book would be a top seller. The book thoroughly discusses how to write research papers, literature reviews, critiques, persuasion essays, and lab reports. The book describes what chemists read and write about.
To understand chemistry you must find what is significant, make a model, and reason by analogy. The book describes how to read a chemistry textbook, study for tests or quizzes, and take lecture notes. All of these hints are good for a college student in chemistry.
The book gives step by step details as the chapter goes along. It gives good details for visual aids, and how to rehearse before delivering your speech if you have to do an oral presentation. The lab report chapter is very useful because it's not just enough to understand the concepts, but you must write out a lab report.
After the authors describe the steps to follow, they give an example and then practice problems. The book includes websites to look at for a chemistry article and good engines to use when searching for a certain chemistry concept.
The book covers so much information that any student at any level of study can understand the book. The book is designed mainly to get the students to communicate in the chemistry language either by writing, reading, or giving oral presentations. With all of the great things found in this book, it is no surprise that it was successful at helping students and professors alike in writing about chemistry.

Epstein's honest intentions do little to mask his admiration and fascination with the icon, but it proves contagious as he gallops through Astaire's early life in turn-of-the-century Nebraska and first career steps as a sidekick to sister Adele in New York vaudeville. Despite apocryphal tales of a less-than-favorable RKO screen test ("Balding. Can't sing. Dances a little."), studio head David O. Selznick thought Astaire "a really sensational bet," and gave the performer his first Hollywood break. Epstein explores Astaire's star-making but personally disagreeable pairing with Ginger Rogers, and the better-liked partners who followed (Rita Hayworth, Judy Garland, Audrey Hepburn and others); defensively recounts Astaire's tight-lipped relationship with the media (which led many to suggest he was just dull); and celebrates the performer's earnest and dedicated spirit. Though Epstein's witty asides can great, his conversational tone keeps the life story moving, making this a good, quick read for even casual fans.

Flawed Compendium

This is a generally light weight survey, mostly of the much more insightful writings of others on the creative life of Fred Astaire. As such, it retains a certain appeal, except that the author's vision is occasionally flawed or incomplete, or both.

Take for example the oft repeated untruth the Astaire and Rogers didn't like each other very much. Of course, they were two very different individuals, with different visions of their own careers. But to repeat the lie that they didn't like each other is flatly false. It's a lie which they both strongly disputed and which Hermes Pan, who was right there, emphatically debunked.

In a related case, Epstein accepts as gospel, the story concocted by RKO's front office to explain the end of the series, on the basis of a decline of popularity. In fact, their popularity never declined but, due to higher production costs, it was RKO's profits which declined. For public consumption, management didn't want to explain it this way, so they conceived their new story. Epstein, without exploration, takes the position of RKO.

Finally, in his conclusions, he strongly implies, through the words others, that Astaire was more purely a technician; short on the creativity end, crediting, without analysis, Gene Kelly for the seamless continuity of dance and plot. The truth is that Kelly just carried further, what Astaire had innovated. And, in fact, some have convincingly demonstrated, the result of super continuity, makes for a more boring, less dramatically successful result, as it thwarts anticipation of the dance, inherent in any Astaire Rogers film. It was Astaire, not Kelly who was prior to, and led the revolution in how dance was to be filmed. In fact, he created most the cinemagraphic techniques which Kelly employed.

And, in regard to dance itself, it was Astaire, after all, who prided himself on never repeating himself, with such extraordinary creativity though 30 some odd films. It was Balanchine who said that there was "so much dance in him", that he had to distill it. Thirty films is a lot of distillation. In short, Astaire was as peerless in these categories, as he was in the categories of style and technique, upon which Epstein focuses.

The author is too often, sloppy, incomplete, and without new insight. In the end, he has written a insidiously flawed book, which as it informs, also misleads.

It's the best I've ever used so 5....but really 4*

It could stay at a beginner level a bit longer, it gets complicated very quickly but if you combine it with the free PolishPod101 (for when you don't have a chance to read along) and use this for the reading, it helps a lot.

***Since this I've tried "Polski Bez Problemu" and I would say it is much better, but less available outside of Poland, unfortunately.

Well done, does the job.

I found the English accent quite pleasing. The package of book plus two tapes is effective, well done, and worth the money. My own background in languages is: my mother taught me German and Slovak when I was 15-17. I learned Latin and French in high school. I took three years of German in college. I have picked up Spanish more or less by living in California and Florida. My wife of 32 years is from Poland and she bought this book for me, and I learned Polish using it and from talking with her and her friends, and reading her books and newspapers. Then she helped me learn Russian! Great fun! I use these languages when communicating and conversing with friends and colleagues. Of course, Slovak helped me with Polish, and both helped me with Russian. Languages are my hobby. I like this book and tapes. It lived up to my expectations. But Polish is hard to learn because the pronunciation is harder than with other Slavic languages, so the learner has to make the effort. This product is adequate to the job.

A great installment in the series

This was a great read, building on everything that was enjoyable in the first book. Aleron Kong is clearly growing as an author. He keeps the reader's interest throughout the book and as the character has grown, as the stage has widened, the challenges have exceeded any growth by a wide margin. The author has succeeded in maintaining dramatic tension. The character seems to have more to lose, to be on the precipice of greater success or heartache with each chapter, which is a nice balancing act. In many stories in the genre, the mechanics overwhelm or the gains become increasingly pointless. Not so, here.

Aleron Kong has avoided many of the pitfalls of the genre, deftly balancing character growth and world-building with challenge that adds to the dramatic tension. This is a nice trick, considering we generally know the conventions of the genre, which usually means we know what to expect next.. but not so much here. Forging is like watching a poker tournament where the game started with a spotlight on one table, where the tournament has 128 tables with 8 players each. In the first book the main character made it past the first round. He has some winnings from the first round but the stakes just keep increasing. In poker, as they say, you're playing your opponents. Here, in round two, every one seated at the table was a winner from the first round. His opponents are smarter. There are familiar characters from the first round, but interesting new characters from this table, and some glimpse into the challenges he'll face if he makes it past this round. The outcome is becoming more highly speculative.

Every now and then the main characters play smart for a few hands and then the author has them go all in, putting everything on the table. It's fun to watch the characters lose a hand, now and then, watch the interplay between the characters as they fold a hand or raise the ante. It's fun watching the author double the blinds. It's fun to watch the author throw an interesting prize into the center of the table that changes the game ...

I'm looking forward to Alliances, the next installment in the series.

Ramblings of a madman

Take from my review what you will. It is just my opinion, and opinions change from one person to the next. This book was believable for at least 1 reason. For me there were many, but everyone who thinks it through should agree that at least this one point was consistent : progression. If you end up in a cave trying to solve thing for a reward you would stay for days if you were a hardcore gamer. I have. And if the people with me were friends i would stay longer. The simple answer is, if you want a story where the mc is ridiculously op and kills dungeons daily, read something else. This book delves into the human aspects of the litrpg genre. What would you honestly do? How would time progress to an outside veiwer? Look no further, aleron answers honestly.

An exciting follow-up to The Land: Founding, this book takes us on some adventures in The Land that we won't soon forget! Throughout battles, dungeon exploration, building up a community and dealing with life's journey, Aleron's books continually keep me entertained and feeling like I'm right there with the characters - the story just flows. Keep up the good work sir!

A beautiful Christian Fiction.

Morris Fenris’s “New Beginnings” is Book 3 in the Second Chances Trilogy, featuring characters we have already grown to know and love from Book 1, “Sara in Montana” and Book 2, “California Dreams.”
Sara and Trent are back, so is Sara’s sister, Grace and her fianc�, Michael. Their love stories may already be written, but they have adventures ahead of them, both in California and in Montana. When Grace stumbles upon her daughter harboring a too young puppy in her closet, it opens her up to meeting her neighbor, Tori – who is recovering from Breast Cancer, helped by Emily – a 9 year old with eyes too old for her age. While they get acquainted, Sara hires Jackson, a young Oncologist to run a clinic in Montana. Jackson currently lives in California, making him the perfect candidate to deliver a wedding dress to Grace before he travels to Montana. A good soul, he delivers the dress to the newly engaged Grace, meeting Tori while he does so, a moment that will eventually lead him to make a leap of love. The events seem mismatched, yet they are serendipitous and glorious in this Christian Fiction that relishes second chances and draws people together for a love inspired Romance that will make you smile.
A great book and a perfect ending to a wonderful series.

Say yes to new beginning!!

What can I say?? I loved this book, the overall content, plot and story line was immaculate. This kind of reminded me of my own life story. I was captivated by the title of the book, it really grabbed me. While reading the book I was in awe and I could not even quint, because I did not want to miss not one line of the story. It is a really awesome story about four couples who realized that you can love more than once. Good job Morris Fenris, New Beginnings is a one of a kind book and I hope you continue to thrive with each novel that you write. God bless you!!

Clean and fun. It's a happy-ending story that nicely ties in with previous stories. It's a refreshing scenario too. Of all the books out there, it's definitely a 5-star, but I rate according to my personal scale where I can make my best recommendations of books to my loved ones later on, but be it known that I find only positives about this story and no negatives, so enjoy!
