About the Author
Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche, a lama in the B�n tradition of Tibet, presently resides in Charlottesville, Virginia. He is the founder and director of Ligmincha Institute, an organization dedicated to the study and practice of the teachings of the B�n tradition. He was born in Amritsar, India, after his parents fled the Chinese invasion of Tibet and received training from both Buddhist and B�n teachers, attaining the degree of Geshe, the highest academic degree of traditional Tibetan culture. He has been in the United States since 1991 and has taught widely in Europe and America.

Not for those looking for a light, easy to read book, but filled with a wealth of detail that would benefit the serious student

This is a powerful book, derived from the extremely meticulous, dense and detailed Tibetan Buddhist traditions. It describes some potentially very valuable techniques and lays out the Tibetan beliefs about sleep, dreams and the intriguing possibility of meditating while you sleep, as well as the importance of dreams, and the Tibetan science of dreaming lucidly.

It is also a difficult book to comprehend, and you may find yourself reading paragraphs many times, struggling to understand these esoteric teachings. They are not easy to understand, nor to apply. My conclusion after reading this, was that I would like to learn how to utilize this treasure house of Tibetan lore, but that in order to truly reach any real understanding, I would need a teacher of this obscure topic, not easy to find in this country.

Not for those looking for a light, easy to read book, but filled with a wealth of detail that would benefit the serious student.

To help you reach your dreaming body, I want to recommend this book.
What I like most about the book is that it focus on being lucid (present) on our reality (collective dream) as an important way to get to our dreaming self, our lucid dream.
It also stresses that although this life is a "dream" we still have to take responsibility for our actions, especially when they affect our fellow human beings; for, as you know, our egomania can turn this dream into a nightmare of overwhelming suffering.

The dreaming attention is a gateway into Infinity, and the benefits of contacting your dreaming body are many. And I quote:

". . . consciousness is then not bound by space and time and personal history, and the dreamer can meet with real beings, receive teachings from real teachers, and find information helpful to others as well as to him or herself."

"Using the dream to develop freedom from limitations, to overcome obstacles in your path, and finally to recognize your true nature and the true nature of all phenomena, is to use the dream wisely."

Great IF you are prepared to practice Tibetan Buddhism

I intend no disrespect to this wonderful author and these special practices, I only offer this caution for those who may not be Tibetan Buddhists.

I bought this based on the glowing reviews, but I was surprised and disappointed when I read it. This book is entirely steeped in Vajrayana practices and in Tibetan cultural references. Maybe everyone who loved it practices Tibetan Buddhism, complete with with complex visualizations, Guru Yoga, and other exotic practices. If you are one of those people, this is a 5 star book full of wonderful teachings. If you are any other type of spiritual seeker, (for reference, I am Theravada Buddhist, though I have been "empowered" to practice Dzogchen and other forms of Vajrayana Buddhism, I don't practice those activity), or if you are just curious about lucid dreaming, this book really isn't for you. Do you want to visualize Tibetan symbols at various chakras as you fall asleep, and then wake up several times during the night to visualize a different set of symbols at different chakras? (and that's just PART of it) If yes, buy this book. If not, then I suggest you look elsewhere.

Dr. Connie Mayfield is Dean of Fine Arts at Cerritos College in California. Prior to that she was Professor of Music at Kansas City Kansas Community College, where she taught music theory and music technology and served as Coordinator of the Music Department. Mayfield was a Fulbright scholar to London, England, and completed her Ph.D. in music theory at the University of Kansas. Following graduation from Michigan State University in 1966, Dr. Lauralee Sherwood joined the faculty at West Virginia University, where she is currently a Professor in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, School of Medicine. For the past 40 years, Professor Sherwood has taught an average of over 400 students each year in physiology courses for pharmacy, medical technology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, nursing, medical, dental, dental hygiene, nutrition, exercise physiology, and athletic training majors. She has authored three physiology textbooks: HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY: FROM CELLS TO SYSTEMS, FUNDAMENTALS OF HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY, and ANIMAL PHYSIOLOGY: FROM GENES TO ORGANISMS, all published by Cengage Learning/Brooks/Cole. Dr. Sherwood has received numerous teaching awards, including an Amoco Foundation Outstanding Teacher Award, a Golden Key National Honor Society Outstanding Faculty Award, two listings in Who's Who Among America's Teachers, and the Dean's Award of Excellence in Education.

Not worth it

I found that the bullet points in the "outline" were all of the headers in the textbook (the headers were very helpful, but you only need them once), and the questions were far more specific than anything I would need in my entry level physiology class. If I did it over I would skip buying this. Buying this instead of the textbook would also be a bad idea since physiology is so conceptual that you need pictures and diagrams to get a grasp on what is happening, and the study guide has no pictures.

Good for new managers

I'll preface to say that I've managed distributed systems implementation and operations and have a considerable point of view in what a manager needs to cover when taking such roles. Unfortunately as supervisors and senior engineers transition into management roles, or even the not-so-uncommon shift of managers from busines to IT roles - understanding expectations is usually the gap.

For these individuals, this is a good cover-all-topics book. Most of the topics just scratch the surface, but that's what most new managers need to know... to know what topics and skillsets they will have to hone. For this group, pick up the book and read it from front to back and then identify areas for improvment in deep diving.

Go for the full edition

This edition of the IT Manager's Handbook is the newest version as I write this review of this well-written series. However, I cannot wholeheartedly recommend this edition as I do for the previous regular edition: IT Manager's Handbook, Second Edition: Getting your new job done. It's essentially a condensed version of the second "full" edition, only dealing with the business impacts of IT Management -- not the technical ones. While there are a couple chapters of new content versus the second edition, it's not worth buying this version, as I explain below.

The second edition is a well written 600 page reference encompassing the job duties of an IT Manager-- a title which varies from company to company. This business edition is only 400 pages and not as thorough on all aspects of this job. (I'm an IT Manager in a ~100 person tech-saavy company in Silicon Valley, and the title IT Manager can vary from SMBs to enterprises greatly -- but this series can help you find the bits and pieces you need.) The chapters in both editions are clearly laid out in an outline format and it's easy to find what you're looking for, from Personnel/HR issues, vendor management/purchasing, security compliance -- but expect the technical details absent from the "business edition". If it wasn't for receiving a promotional copy of the business edition, I would have returned this immediately...

It seems as the publisher was ready for a new edition, but the authors didn't want to update the technical part of the book (or the other way around). Hence take the first half of the excellently written second edition on staffing needs, project management, security compliance, and other topics -- expand the chapters by a few pages, and call it a new book. While you're only paying 2/3 the cost of the full second edition, if you're going to spend this sort of money on a reference, go for the second edition written in 2006. I'm wondering if there aren't any further updates to this title planned hence the reason for sticking with the business issues -- which don't change as much. Technology has changed since 2006 (that's the problem with technology minded books), but there's still a lot of relevance in the second edition. While there appears to be a couple new notable chapters in this business edition, one which is most notably entitled "The New Technologies of Connectness" that deals with social media and mobile e-mail, it's awfully short (about 15 pages) and seems to be added as an afterthought rather than a fully fledged topic (which it deserves.)

Don't waste your money on this edition.

Good overview of IT Management for a newbie

As someone who recently became an IT manager after years as a programmer and team lead I was especially interested in the topic this book covers, although by the time I read this book I had already pored over numerous other texts and had been in the job for several months. What I think this book does well is sum up the various topics that an IT manager deals with and gathers them into one convenient location. I see this book more as a primer or a "IT Management for Dummies" than a be-all-end-all book on IT management. I could see myself referencing certain parts of it in the future to refresh my memory, but I also think it lets you know what's out there so you know which areas you might want to spend more time looking in to. (e.g. Clearly there are full books, degree programs, and certifications on Project Management, so a chapter on PM is not going to give you all the information you need, but it will let you know the basic terminology to help guide you to the next level).

The authors start very basic and high level - what IS an IT manager and what does one do in that role? They talk about how you could get into that role and how to decide if it's even a role you want to get into. All very good topics, but if you've already got the job you can skip this. After this they talk about the first 100 days - another topic that is covered in much more depth in other books but which this book can guide you in the right direction on. There are chapters on Managing a team, Staffing a team, Project Management, Budget, the actual IT part of your job (Software, OS, Enterprise Applications), Security, Disaster Recover, Users, and then New Technologies.

As I said before, each chapter offers an overview of that topic with a lengthy bibliography that offers much more information on any topic you find yourself wanting to know more about. There's also a glossary of terms that is helpful. Anyone that is becoming an IT Manager for the first time, or anyone that is looking for a refresher on what topics they should stay up on as an IT Manager, should find plenty of good information in this book.

I teach French, German and Chinese to little children and have just discovered your books. I love them, as does my daughter. I currently have Beauty and the Beast German edition and it says level 4 and 5 coming soon. SLANGMAN DAVID BURKE

Being brought up in a multi-lingual household, David Burke used his language skills as a tour guide at Universal Studios in Hollywood, California, giving tours in English, French, Italian, and sign language. His love of language inspired him to delve into the intricacies of words and led him to become a prominent author of more than 100 books on understanding slang and idioms in different languages, as well as books that teach kids foreign languages through fairy tales. His materials on slang and idioms are currently used as course curriculum by Berlitz International, UCLA, Harvard University, NYU and Hewlett Packard, and even by the writers of The Simpsons to give Bart his coolness.

Having been trained since the age of four as a classical pianist, David became the in-house music director for the Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee where he composed and scored documentaries, commercials, and public service announcements featuring top stars in Hollywood.

In 1986, David founded Slangman Publishing which specializes in materials that teach children foreign languages, as well as products teaching teens and adults slang and idioms in a variety of languages.

In 1999, David became known as Slangman to an audience of over 250 million people in 120 countries due to his regular 6-year segment on Voice of America (VOA), the broadcast network of the United States government.

Currently, David has fused all of his language, musical, and performing talents together to create HEY WORDY!, a children s TV show, which introduces children ages 3+ to the world of foreign languages and cultures in an environment of music, animation, and magic.
